What Students Say
Likes
- The faculty of the English department is excellent. Most of them are well read on the papers they teach. They interact well with the students and create a friendly environment in the classroom where there's no place for discrimination or judgement.
- Safety is ensured in the college campus. There are ample number of female staffs in girls colleges like DRC to make the campus more comfortable for women.
- College societies give a lot of exposure to a student. Culturally, it's very rich here.
Dislikes
- Infrastructure in some colleges is good. But most DU colleges are mouldy since they are old. Renovation doesn't happen until annual NAAC visit.
- Expensive PGs in both the campuses. Cost of living is high. But that is the price of living in a big city.
- College hostels are really difficult to get. They are merit and attendance based. They are extremely costly too. It becomes hard for lower middle class people to apply for the hostel.
Course Curriculum Overview
The SEC courses teach new skills indeed and allows us to explore other areas of interests other than the core papers. The core papers are itself quite relevant and updated according to the present world issues. A lot of NET syllabus is covered too sometimes through the curriculum. Teachers use presentations to teach sometimes but it should be further improved. Students are asked to avoid plagiarism at all costs and encouraged to make innovative assignments instead of copying from Google. This ensures the overall development of the student and prepares them for the real world.
Fees and Financial Aid
Internships are recognized under SEC courses but there are not much opportunities inside the college campus itself. But there are many university level Internships. The summer internships of DU under the Vice Chancellor are widely respected and do provide good stipends and work experience to the students who get hired. The fees is around 20000 per academic year (approx.). Scholarships are given based on caste reservations. No merit-based scholarships are available thus giving less scope to General students to get scholarships. Merit based scholarships are available for SOL students only. Hostels are very expensive in DU (2 lakhs per year approx).
Campus Life
The college societies are diverse and gives exposures to many kids' talents. But the truth is that they are highly corrupted too. Grouping and having bias is quite normal here. It is essential to balance academic life and society life. Sometimes the ECA societies can be overwhelming. There are no separate slots for these, so a student has to miss classes to practice for their society. But overall, its a wonderful experience.
Hostel Facilities
DRC college hostel is overall good. But the admission process is very tiresome. Parents had to physically come for the interview on a very short notice and it was compulsory. Competition is high for hostel as the admission is merit and attendance based. The price is very high: 1,69,000 per academic year. Seats are quite less too: 150 for 1st year students, 13 for 2nd and 13 for 3rd year students. The ratio doesn't make sense. The facilities are overall very good. Rooms and washrooms are cleaned properly everyday. Laundry service is available. Rooms have ACs. No separate electric bill. Food quality is quite good compared to the PGs. Non veg is available with eggs 3 times a week and chicken twice a week. Hostel mess is huge and work on reviews. The mess needs to be more hygienic though. Plastic or hair is sometimes found in food. But it's not often. Ample outdoor space and greenery available. WiFi and Computer/Study room available.
Admission
Admission is done based on CUET score mainly. The difficulty level is moderate to high. The admission process is long for DU. Staying alert about the website notices is important. But overall smooth admission process. Hostel admission process in DRC is quite bothersome though.
Faculty
Most teachers are very approachable and liberal here. They are well read on their subject matters and give a new perspective about everything. They conduct film screenings often for literature students to watch the movie adaptations of the texts in the syllabus. Mentors guide us through personal problems too sometimes. They teach us how to write papers and how the scholarly world works. A department of 80 students has 12 teachers approx. They are also connected with students on WhatsApp and send critical study materials online too. They respond well to queries outside the classroom or class timings as well.
