My experience at Assam University Silchar as a CSE student.

The subjects that the department offers are core ones that are really important to prepare students to face real-world problems. The infrastructure of the CSE department should be developed more which would increase comfort and quality of education. The question papers set by the faculty members are easy to medium level. The exam schedules are highly flexible and unpredictable which is a very big issue and should be addressed by the authority. The supplementary papers should take place in time considering the student's career. The lagging of degrees due to postponement of exams is a major problem and should be addressed.

The fee structure is around 56k per year. There are scholarship opportunities for SC/ST and EWS students. The placement isn't good at all. Companies keep on holding back from hiring students. Overall, the fee structure is reasonable considering that it is a central university, but, the facilities provided to the students are really low.

Fests are a rare phenomenon in this university. The main fest held last year (2023-Ethfiesta and Auskriti) was a good one. Tech fest hasn't been organised since years now. We couldn't witness tech fest. Every year, interhostel sports are organised during sports week. Ethnic fests are held such as Ugadi. We had department clubs for various activities during which we used to organise activities and small gatherings in the department. Now, it has been opened to all.

Rooms in most of the hostels are damp and mosses grow which isn't a good condition. The hostel where I live (GH-6) was recently built and has good facilities such as tiled floors, clean rooms with cupboards and shelves and a gym within the hostel campus. The food provided isn't satisfactory at all and the main item provided is rice. Menu is: rice/roti for both breakfast and dinner, chicken/fish/egg curry for non-vegetarians and paneer/mixed veg/kofta for vegetarians. There is not much of a variety in the menu and the taste isn't that good either. Per year, the fee is around Rs.6k for general category students. Hostel allotment is done every year for which we need to apply via an application form.

Admission takes place via JOSSA councelling only for B.Tech. Applicants can apply from the official portal itself. Application fee is around Rs.56k per year. For other courses, for UG courses candidates myst have completed 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks. Additionally, the university also conducts entrace exams for specific courses.

Faculty members are well qualified and have good knowledge about their respective fields. They give good guidance to students who are seeking for help. However, there are times when they don't give deserving marks to the students which is the reason for mental stress amongst students.
