Likes
- Largest Campus around 2100 acres, with greenary through out the whole campus. Even in the day of scorching heat, the campus roads are covered by a lot of trees on both sides.
- Culturally, Technologically well-cultured institute. Also in the field of sports, the students show their amazing talent. Every year in Inter IIT competitions, our institute stays within top 3 positions in all - Sports, Cultural, Technology.
- Another thing I like here is the night life. The students can roam in campus 24*7 anytime, ranges from dawn to midnight and midnight to dawn too. The night canteens provide reasonable cost food in late night for fulfilling food cravings of students.
Dislikes
- Nowadays, senior-junior bonding is getting decreased compared to earlier times beacuse of less interaction.
Course Curriculum Overview
At 12th level, I was a NEET aspirant student. But during the lockdown, soon I changed my mind and started to prepare for engineering and I qualified JEE advanced in my first attempt. I searched from the database that which branches are coming in my rank and found Biotechnology. This topic was my favourite in Biology during class 12. I didn't think twice and took admission in the branch after counselling. The curriculum is structured so well. A first year student reads same thing with his batchmates irrespective of branch. From second year onwards, Department curriculum starts. It also varies in various topics and fields in Biotechnology. Besides, the feature of Breadth Elective subject allows one student to take any subject from any department and explore interdisciplinary study. Sometimes, there is a high number of credits in one semester in some departments. If it can be adjuged in new curriculum, it will be helpful.
Internships Opportunities
All the companies who come for the placement, come for the internship too. The procedure is more or less similar to placement in the same portal. This is conducted by Institute CDC - Career Development Centre. Besides, the students who do not get offer through CDC can take project under a professor at any institute including home institution too.
Placement Experience
The final year students are eligible for placements. For B.Tech students, it is 7th semester and for Dual Degree students it is 9th semester. There are a lot of companies like Google, Microsoft, Uber, Sprinklr etc. visited the college and around 1000-1300 offers are made per year. Around 70%-80% students get placed. Highest package varies from 1 cr to 2 cr and average pakages around 20 lakhs. My plan is to do PhD after getting the degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees in an IIT is much higher though being a Government institution. Especially, tution fee cost is much higher ( 1 lakh per semester resulting 2 lakhs per year). The complete cost of a B Tech student is around 12-13 lakhs in 4 year. But the students who are economically weaker, they can avail tution fee waiver by showing valid income documents of their guardians. Besides, they can avail various scholarships which may support their study like MCM Scholarship etc.
Campus Life
There are two large fests happened here - Kshitij (Techno-Management Fest) and Spring Fest (2nd largest cultural fest). Both are typically held in January. These fests are the best memories to me. Our library is the largest in Asia. It spans in a large area with 3 floors equipped with books and seating arrangements. During our exams, library is opened for 24*7 hours. The classrooms are very modern with smart technologies and AC facilities. The IIT KGP students are the best among all IITs for sports and extracurricular activities too. They participate in various competitions and clench prizes from everywhere. I was a Governor of BTDS Druheen - Bengali Technology Dramatics Society Druheen for the session 2023-2024. This society is a family to all the members of it.
Hostel Facilities
The student who is offered a seat in IIT KGP and he/she takes admission, a hostel seat is alloted to him/her by default though he/she is a local resident. The hostels have 24-hour internet connectivity. They have mess facilities too where a diverse type of menu is served. The food quality varies from hostel to hostel.
Admission
My Course - B.Tech-M.Tech Dual Degree (10 semesters) Eligibility - 12th pass in Science stream having physics, chemistry and math with 75% marks for UR and 65% for SC, ST students. One student has to qualify Jee main first and then give JEE Advanced and qualify for studying in IIT. Application forms are available in the exam's respective website. After the results are out, JOSAA conducts the counselling. It is a smooth process and whole counselling completes within a month.
Faculty
I have got an amazing list of faculty members at this IIT Kharagpur during my stay. Here is no particular faculty-to-student ratio kind of thing, rather every faculty is dedicated to teach the students until they have the crystal clear concept. If any student faces any problem in academics or any other issue, they can approach the respective faculties and faculty advisor (guardian of a particular batch at campus) anytime. According to my personal experiences, the professors who are the alumni of this institute have the best teaching style compared to others. Each and every faculty's credentials are there in the institute's main website. Anybody from any part of the world can access those things.
