Remarks
The NITC Campus is highly mesmerizing with enormous green trees decorating the campus and maintaining its serenity. This is the best environment I ever stayed in. I had the best of the 4 years of my life here. In short, I had a fantabulous experience cherishing my college days and rejuvenating myself in the South Indian culture.
Entrance Preview
I got an admission in NITC in 2013 with the help of my JEE Mains Rank. It is a qualifying examination for studying in the NITs . The candidate admission process was completely based on the rank in the JEE Main Examination without the follow-up of any interview process. The eligible candidates for a particular specialization were shortlisted based on JEE Main Rank and the number of seats allocated for a specialization within the institute. Besides, the candidate's choice for opting out for a particular specialization was given utmost priority before deciding the eligibility based on the two factors above. In this way, the admission process succeeded in allocating the preferred branch to most of the candidates. I am no exception to it. I got admission in the specialization I longed for - Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Electricity (in Physics) has always inspired me to think out of the box when I was preparing for board exams. I used to be rapt completely in the brainstorming electrical circuit problems which always encouraged me to study the subject deeper and deeper. Sometimes I had to burn the midnight oil also to figure out the amazing electrical concepts underlying the basic day to day phenomena. I always wanted to keep this thirst of mine towards electrical knowledge alive. Hence I opted for Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Finally getting what I craved for is surely a blessing from the Almighty.
Course Curriculum Overview
The entire B.Tech curriculum for Electrical Engineering was well organized starting from the general curriculum followed in 1st year to the branch curriculum for the rest of the 3 years. A total of 30 to 35 core engineering subjects were taught in 6 semesters starting from the basic concepts and eventually finishing in the best manner possible. Each semester comprised 4 to 5 theory papers along with 2 practical courses which were based on the theories explained in the previous semester. NITC devotes 6 hours in a week towards practical learning in well equipped laboratories apart from the theory papers which is an appreciable figure as compared to other colleges. Every student in NITC is supposed to register for a good number of local as well as global electives to complete the degree. The local electives are specifically designed to provide a glimpse of certain knowledge which would enhance the core learning concepts. The institute offers global electives to the students to promote interdisciplinary education and research which is gradually going to become the backbone of future research in the country in any field. The professors and the PhD scholars always remain engrossed in deep research projects which are sometimes financed by external agencies. Besides, the institute has also signed MoUs with certain public sectors to help its students work on live industrial projects.
Internships Opportunities
No. The college did not provide any internship or training but it has always helped a student to apply for internship in various industries and colleges. Many faculties even used their own recommendation to arrange internships for some students.
Placement Experience
The placement scenario was on its peak during 2013 wherein more than 90% placements were recorded. It came down in the following years to nearly 70% . Most of the companies visiting the campus belonged to the IT sector with a few core campanies visiting towards the end of the placement season. Some of them were IOCL, BPCL, Schneider Electric, General Electric etc. The IT companies offered attractive packages starting from 4lpa to 22lpa with the average package going upto 7-8lpa
College Events
Tathva is the technical fest of the institute and also the biggest technical fest in South India. It is organized by the students in the monsoon semester for a period of 3 days by collecting funds apart from the contribution from the college authority. A large number of technical events are organized with participants coming from other colleges as well. Ragam is the cultural fest of the institute. It goes for 3 days wherein a variety of cultural events like music, dance etc are hosted with participants from other colleges also. Superstars and celebrities are also invited to rejuvenate the evening crowd in each of these 3 days.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure applicable during my tenure as a college student was quite affordable with the tuition fee costing upto Rs. 20000 per semester for an unreserved candidate. The fee structure was different for the Kerala students and the students from other states. The category wise differentiation was also followed in the fee structure as in any other government college. The institute also offers Means cum Merit scholarships to certain eligible students so that they can continue education with the minimum possible cost.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college mainly provides Merit cum Means scholarships to the eligible candidates based on their family income and the student's academic performance. I did not avail any scholarship or loan.
Campus Life
The college is well renowned for its talent in football, basketball, cricket and volleyball. It has also achieved a hat-trick of wins in the InterNIT Football tournament for the last 3 years. There are music and dance clubs as well apart from sports. Most students used to take part in a particular activity of his or her choice to get a refreshment from the daily tedious life. Yes I have taken part in many cricket matches in the institute and also participated in a lot of quiz competitions.
Hostel Facilities
Yes. The first year students were accomdated in a room shared by 4 students. The second year students were accomodated in Mega Hostels wherein 2 students shared a room. The rooms were spacious and well maintained. Single rooms were alloted to third and fourth year students. Each hostel has a mess wherein breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on a daily basis. Both North and South Indian food were served at reasonable cost and the taste was also appreciable.
Alumni/Alumna
Yes. There used to be alumni meet in the institute wherein seniors came to the college and discussed their experience and findings in the industry. They also guided us for our future during the meet. The alumni network is very much instrumental in the overall development of the college and students. They also provide scholarship to the deserving candidates.
Exam Structure
Yes. There were exams every month with no study leaves. This used to make the student life tiresome and hectic every semester. Also, the classes used to start at 8 am in the morning and it went upto 6pm in the evening at times. This also made the daily life monotonous and hectic apart from crippling the student's funtime and merrymaking.
Faculty
The institute has numerous eminent professors who have been teaching for more than a decade. They are distinguished professors coming from the best engineering colleges like the IITs. They are solely responsible for promoting intense research in the institute. There are Associate and Assistant professors also who are comparatively new in the teaching profession. Apart from these positions, the institute recruits fresh engineers as Adhoc Faculties who handles the laboratory sessions most of the time. This practice helps both the adhoc faculties and the students in career development because students can interact with the adhoc faculties regarding the concepts taught by the professors in the class. The adhoc faculties also share their newly gained fresh knowledge about the latest technologies and innovations. The students can grasp it easily owing to the concepts taught by the professors.
