Entrance Preview
The St.Xavier's college has it's own entrance examination that is conducted by the faculty of each Department. On the basis of the written exam score, an interview is conducted. On clearing both admission to the course is given. St. Xavier's has one of the best Sociology departments in the country, with excellent faculty, which is why i choose the college and course.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course has eight papers for Honours for the three year B. A. degree. The Sociology course has seven theoretical papers and one practical, based on field work data. The electives that can be taken with the course are, English, History, Political Science, Journalism, Mass Communication, Film Studies. These are called pass courses.
Internships Opportunities
The Sociology Honours course did not have an internship programme. As a part of the course, students had to conduct some field work. One of the papers for the final University evaluation was based on the field work.
Placement Experience
There is a placement cell in the college, through which students can apply for jobs. However, there is nothing specific related to the Sociology Honours course. Since this is a Bachelors degree most people apply for the Masters course at various universities.
College Events
The biggest cultural festival at St. Xavier's is called Xavotsav. It is a very popular event that is attend by students from all the colleges and universities in the state. The first few days of the event has inter-college competitions in various categories such as art, craft, dance, singing, fashion shows, etc.
Fees and Financial Aid
I am not aware of any scholarship / loan facilities offered. Since i did not avail of any financial services from the college, I did not find out what facilities are offered.
Campus Life
The campus life is very vibrant. There are number of inter departmental events and competitions that are organized through out the year. From cultural events, to literary events, to sports and social work activities, there is a constant environment of competition and growth. We have a campus that is gender and culturally sensitized. There are students from various ethnic, cultural, religious backgrounds and there is harmony in everyone.
Alumni/Alumna
The Alumni network is very strong and effective. Various events and meets are organized during the year for the Alumnus. The top professionals from various fields in Kolkata are a part of either St. Xavier's school or college, hence a part of the Alumni. It is a great place for networking.
