Remarks

The admission process begins with the cut-off score on basis of JEE Mains. Nearly 3 cutoff lists are released each in one week and subsequently, students are called for admission if they qualify the criteria. The whole process is around 3-4 weeks. The information can be gathered from Thapar's official website where they have brochures and all other information. The admssion process can be made much easier using some technical aspects on portal, which is highly manual right now.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

The course covers all the basic concepts like C++, Data Structure and Algorithms, Operating Systems, and all other CS Fundamentals. The Faculty is sufficient enough to cover the students, like 1 teacher for 20 students is usually the norm. The faculty is qualified from good institutes and are usually Ph.D.'s and master's qualified. The term exams are twice each semester. Overall the papers are easy if you have attended the classes, and paper repeats quite a lot based on previous years.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

The internship opportunities are offered along with Placements in the form of Intern+FTE mode. Whereas companies offer internship as well as placement to the selected student. The stipends are really good from around 50,000 to 1L per month. Great Companies like McKinsey & Co., JP. Morgan, Axis Bank, StanC, etc. come fair often and take 10-15 students each. So overall the criteria are good. But they are offered only to students who have good projects and skillsets. So prepare accordingly.

Placement Experience

4

The Placements are the soul of Thapar University. The average package is around 9 LPA for tech companies (which is nearly 80% of all companies coming here). The departments of Mechanical and Computer Engineering are the ones with the best Placements where companies like Microsoft, Amazon, De Shaw, Black Rock, Maruti Suzuki, etc. come and offer good compensation. The highest offers range around 40LPA but are less in the number of offers made. Nearly 90% of students get placed and if someone does study regularly and prepares well for placements via a good skillset, they get good placements.

Fees and Financial Aid

The Fee Structure has 2 parts wherein they have Tuition Fee as well as Development Fee. Tuition Fee is usually around 1,20,00 to 1,50,000 per sem and Dev Fee is around 50,000 per sem. The insitute hikes the fee around 10-20% each year and cost of studying is on a gradual increase in the institute. The college provides ample of opporunities when it comes to Scholarships, where not only they offer Merit based each year, but also if someone is from a Economically weker Family, then the institute really helps them by covering Tution fee at least.

Campus Life

3.5

The campus life is quite good when compared with other engineering colleges. The annual fest is Saturnalia which is one of Indias biggest fests. During our time some popular guests like Zakir Khan, Anubhav Singh Bassi, Benny Dayal and many other personalities visited in the fest. Also, the societies in college are always on a buzz, wherein we have events happening each week. The Library is among Asia's biggest libraries ranging from books from various genres and all are issued free of cost on basis of the Institute ID Card. But the books need to be returned within a specific deadline. All the sports facilities are there be it Football, BasketBall, Cricket, Swimming, Lawn and Table Tennis, Dancing, Hockey, etc. with professional grounds as well assisting coaches.

Hostel Facilities

4

The hostel facility is good overall but it gets a little expensive each year. We have nearly 13 hostels on our campus for boys and now 9 hostels for girls. The hostel life is amazing with superb furniture and gym facilities in each of them. There is diwali party and annual hostel party for each of the hostels. The Mess Food is satisfactory most of the time, and sometimes really good with mess menu in complete hands of students. The Process for hostels is easy and happens during the time of college admissions as well. After that, for each year a portal is made on which students register and get a hostel room based on their preferences and merit.

Other Applied Colleges

PEC Chandigarh | BTech Computer Science

At that time, Thapar was considered a bit better than PEC in terms of campus life and hostel life.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
