How's IIT Kharagpur for your graduation

IIT Kharagpur is one of the first 16 IITs established in India and is now recognized as an institute of national importance. It has 19 Academic departments, 7 centers, 8 schools of excellence and 38 dual degree programs. It was also ranked as one of the top public universities with the rank of 280 in the QS Global World Rankings. I decided to pursue my graduation here because of it reputation of academics and extra-curriculars. The cutoff for computer science here was 92 as the opening rank and 272 as the closing for general category. After being shortlisted, I received a call for counselling and to pay the fees along with the security deposit. The computer science curriculum is vast and at par with the changing technology and emerging trends. It has topics and modules like Expression evaluation, Iteration, Functions, Recursion, arrays, structures, linked lists, data structures, Proof techniques, algebraic structures and morphisms, introduction to graphs, switching circuits, sequential circuits, ASM Charts, context-sensitive languages, Turing machines, Parallel models, basic notions, propositional logic, etc. The faculty has been extremely cooperative and helps the candidates with their problems repetitively. The faculty-student ratio is 12:1. We had bi-weekly tests and quizzes which helped us keep up with the curriculum and remember it easily for the terminals.

IIT KGP has the highest placement record of 2.4 crores per annum with 1600 offers which are the highest in the industry. The average package stands at 35 lakhs per annum. Computer science is a rewarding career and gets several foreign offers too from top recruiting companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, HCL, Hero Motocorp, Tata steel, etc. These companies mainly recruit candidates for positions like Software developer, web developer, database administrator, computer systems analyst, data science, information security, systems analyst, computer architect, soft engineer, etc. The companies usually look for candidates having prior experience in the industry like internships, live projects and a well-developed portfolio.

IIT KGP offers a full-ride scholarship to students within the top 100 all India JEE Advanced rankers whose parents' gross annual income is below 20 lakhs. These scholarships cover all the expenses of the students including tuition fees, food and accommodation, Study material, and transportation. Other ways of getting a scholarship are through endowment allowances like the B.P. Poddar scholarship, Puri memorial scholarship, technology alumni association, etc.

The campus life here is a fine amalgamation of networking with seniors, having fun at the fests, and learning our way through creative clubs. It has festivals like Spring Fest, the annual socio-cultural fest at IIT. It is also Asia's largest student-managed socio-cultural fest. Singers like Sunidhi Chauhan, Salim-Suleiman, Farhan Akhtar, Pritam, Kailash-Kher, etc visited the stage at the fest. These fests attract participation from the top 150+ colleges in India. Another fest it Kshitij. It is Asia's largest techno-management fest with a total budget of Rs 15 million and total prize money of Rs 5 million.
