Remarks

In 2017 when I applied for Thapar college major importance was of JEE mains marks+ 12th Physics, chemistry, and maths scores. More than 75% marks are required in physics chemistry and maths cumulatively. In the admission process Firstly, there is an internet portal on which we have to upload our details like name, parents name, Date of birth and score in JEE mains exam. Then we have to select the branches in preference order using the internet portal only. After certain days, the college start releasing the results as 1st list, 2nd list and 3rd list. If any student gets admission in the branch of his or her choice then that person is called for in person counselling where documents are verified, fees is been paid for hostel and mess. Finally, that person receives an admission letter.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

I chose the Mechanical Engineering course because I was interested in learning about automobiles, engines, transmission systems, differentials and finally I learn a lot at Thapar college about these topics. In a lecture class, the student to faculty ratio varies since many other branches are also combined because of similar courses, so it can vary from 30:1 to 150:1 student: faculty ratio. While in labs the ratio is 15:1. Almost all the faculty of the mechanical department did their PhD (s), bachelor and masters from IIT's or foreign colleges. In each semester there are mid sem tests, end sem tests, quizzes, sessionals, lab tests, vivas. Overall the difficulty level varied from normal to hard range.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

In the mechanical branch lesser companies come for internships as compared to the Placements, some companies come for internships are Tata motors, Anand, Padmini VNA, Spicer India Pvt Ltd. Many students find internships on their own through their network or by writing emails to HRs of different companies many students do internships at IIT's also. The highest stipend is provided by Tata motors and that is 18000 per month on second Padmini VNA provide a stipend of 15000 per month while IIT's provide a stipend of 10,000 per month.

Placement Experience

4.5

Eligibility differs from branch to branch, mechanical branches become eligible for placements from 7th semester, just after the semester of internship. Companies that came for placement are Bajaj, Asian Paints, Mahindra, Deloitte, Capgemini, Accenture, Tata consultancy services, Byjus, Max speciality films, Smart cubes, UOLO edtech, Skuad, Videojet, Infosys, Indosaw Industrial products pvt ltd, Siemens Digital Industries software, Absolutdata, Pristyn care, Fieldassist, JSW steels, ZS, JBM, Authbridge, Pine labs, Nestle, L&T, Jindal Steels, Advantage Club and snapdeal. Around 90% of my batch students got placement offer.

Fees and Financial Aid

Every year there will be a 10% hike in tuition fees, while the hostel and mess fees remain constant. There are various scholarships provided by the college such as scholarships based on merit, scholarship based on need and scholarships if the student's parent also studied from Thapar college.

Campus Life

5

Thapar organizes a saturnalia fest which is the largest fest organized by any college in the North, apart from this there are food fests, technical fests and games fests. Thapar is equipped with every kind of book in hard copy as well as soft. While there are smart classrooms and enormous lecture halls, labs equipped with essential equipments for providing knowledge of present technologies. There are a total of 27 societies or clubs for enhancing technical knowledge, acting skills, communication skills, or related to art and creativity. Many clubs organize food festivals, and adventure trips also. Also, the college has 1 football ground, 1 running track, 1 indoor badminton court, 3 outdoor badminton courts and 4 lawn tennis courts.

Hostel Facilities

5

In my 4 years of duration, I stayed in hostels, not in any pg. There are various hostels provided by the college, some hostels don't have AC while some have. Every hostel has its mess, T V room, Gym, and Table tennis room. The meal is really good and it is of North Indian type and it is provided 3 times in a day that is breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hostels are registered through online mode and fees can be paid through online or offline mode.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
