Remarks
I've applied for various private and government colleges in West Bengal. After the first counseling, I was offered a seat in Jis Kalyani and one or two more private colleges, I just waited patiently so that I can get a government college, and finally after the second counseling I've secured a seat in the Government college of engineering and textile technology, Berhampore. It is one of the most reputed and old colleges of textile technology in India. Initially, our college didn't have any streams rather than textile technology but later at first computer science and engineering branch was added and in 2011 two more branches Mechanical engineering and Electrical Engineering were added.
Course Curriculum Overview
Our college is affiliated with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology which is one of the finest universities of India for technical studies so our course curriculum is updated with industrial standards. People who've followed the course structure properly will not find any difficulty in the job hunt after being graduated. You do have great faculty members in our college most of them are having M.tech and Ph.D. from reputed universities and they teach really very well and faculty students ratio is somewhere around 1:5 and for the CSE department it is 1:4.
Internships Opportunities
Companies don't actually come for giving internship opportunities they only visit at the time of placements. So that's really a downside I would say but if you're dedicated enough to get that kind of opportunity then you can always reach out to our alumni network who are working all over the world. So if you have a proper skillset you'll be able to get internships for sure.
Placement Experience
From the seventh semester, students become eligible for campus placement. The placement scenario for the computer science and engineering department and textile technology is really well. Companies like TCS, COGNIZANT, INFOSYS, WIPRO, and many more visits campus to hire students. Even tech giants like ADOBE, ORACLE have visited our campus. For textile students companies like RAYMOND, WELSPUN, SYNTEX, and many more. And our alumni network is very strong so that thing also helps in terms of placements. So there are enough companies for IT and CSE department and all the skillful students get placed. But for Electrical engineering and Mechanical engineering placements are not very good I would say. Packages vary from 3LPA to 12LPA mostly but the highest package offered was 20LPA from ADOBE.
Fees and Financial Aid
First of all the fee structure of our college is very affordable for almost everybody, it's somewhere around 15000 per year for computer science and engineering department and for others it is even lower 6000 per year. Even various scholarships are also available with which you can easily pay for other expenses like books, laptop, mess rent if you're home is far from the college. You can apply for the SVMCM scholarship which pays 60000 per year or Aikyashree and MOMA which is available for minorities. There are many other scholarship schemes but these are the major ones but one thing, in order to avail of the scholarship your family's annual income should be below 3 lakhs and you should've secured 75% marks in your 12th board examination. The placement scenario for CSE and TT branches is pretty well but for EE and ME branches it's not that great. Many reputed companies like TCS, WIPRO, COGNIZANT, RAYMOND, ADOBE, ORACLE, etc visit campus to hire students. The package varies from 3 LPA to 12 LPA.
Campus Life
Our campus is not very big but it is really very organized. We have greeneries on the whole campus and overall life here is also great. One of the most famous places in Berhampore, the Square field is just in front of our college. We celebrate many of the festivals in college like Saraswati puja, Teacher's day. Our college's biggest fest happens somewhere around July and it is called Alfresco. We do have access to a really good library in our college it has almost all the books needed for academics and besides that, there are lots of literature, history and various other things that one can explore. Classrooms are clean and there are smart classes to which are air-conditioned and have projectors for better understanding. Lots of extracurricular activities are there and each of those has different clubs to organize those things properly. Like photography club, Cricket, Football, Coding Club, Music, Drama and lots and lots of other things. You won't regret joining GCETTB.
