
Entrance Preview
I gave JEE MAINS 2013 exam and scored 150 marks out of 360. I chose Thapar University due of its excellent academic structure and new improvised courses that were being introduced here. I had interest in automobile engineering so i wanted to pursue Mechanical engineering. But that branch was not available for my rank so i chose Mechatronics engineering branch.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is excellent with focus on fully implementing the technical knowledge being offered and is constantly improved based on the feedback of students and faculty. With the tie up with Trinity college, Dublin, the course structure has been improvised to impart practical knowledge in synergy with the theoretical knowledge.
Internships Opportunities
One semester is dedicated to the industrial training. For Mechanical and Mechatronics students, the internship period is for the sixth semester and for rest of the branches the internship period is either for the seventh or eighth semester. For Mechanical and Mechatronics branch, around 50 companies offered internship to students.
Placement Experience
Thapar University was ranked 8th best university in India on the terms of placement during the period 2015-16. A total of 172 companies visited the campus and all over 1106 offers were made. Almost 95% of the students got placed. This is the link for the placement data for the period of 2014-15 enlisting the details of the companies visiting the campus.Average package for the Computer Science and Electronics branch was about 8 lac p.a. The average package for the mechanical, mechatronics branch was about 5.5 lac p.a.
College Events
Technical and Cultural fests are regularly conducted within the university. The main technical fest 'SATURNALIA' is conducted around the month of October. It includes technical events followed by a star night.Other cultural events such as Mudra, Karaoke Night are organized which bring out the singing, dancing and modelling talent of the students.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is relatively expensive. Additionally the accommodation facilities of hostels increase the hole in the wallet. The total expenditure for four years comes at around 12 lacs. The infrastructure and accommodation facilities are worth the expenditure.
Fees and Financial Aid
Students securing more than 95% marks in 12th exams are offered a meritorious scholarship of Rs. 1,86,000 on joining the university. The University also honours and offers scholarships to the first three meritorious students of each branch every year. Additionally a bright student from financially inadequate background can apply for some relief.
Campus Life
The gender ratio is balanced. There are adequate number of male and female students in the college. The campus life is en thrilling and enjoyable. Various activities are organised every day after 5 p.m. The COS complex is a hub for students to spend their leisure time.
Alumni/Alumna
An alumni network is maintained by various societies and it is really helpful. Some students get chance to gain internship experience due to the alumni links. Efforts are made to sustain the relations in an amicable way.
Exam Structure
Exams are conducted for two times during the semester : Mid Sem Tests and End sem Tests. The assessment is done on basis of these tests, short quizzes, lab evaluations and regular class performance in tutorials. The grading system is relative, which means the student getting the maximum marks gets full grades.
Admission
The form for Thapar University is released near the month of May. It can be filled online or the hard copy of the registration form can be collected from the university. Interested students can fill their form till the month of June. The Counselling for the applicants begins in the month of July and carries on till mid august. Counselling is done on the basis of the marks scored.
Faculty
The faculty is highly qualified and experienced. The minimum qualification required for hiring new faculty is PhD. Professors teach with dedication and enthusiasm. The main aim is to impart as much relevant technological knowledge about the subject as possible. The faculties are regularly working on funded large scale research projects, so their knowledge and exposure is really astounding.
