Faculty of Fishery Sciences, offers a 4 years Professional course in Fishery Sciences (B.F.Sc.) which is under the State Government and also one of kind in West Bengal. Students passing out from here acquire the minimum qualification that is required to apply for the job of Fisheries Extension Officer, which is a State Government owned post. Other opportunities also include the chance to excel in academics with numerous opportunities for research and further studies, applying for Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Senior Research Fellows at prestigious Central institutes such as CIFRI, CIFA, CIBA etc. Students can also go on to become Agriculture Research Scientists besides excelling in private companies. The admission procedure is done on the basis of a merit list prepared according to the percentage of the total marks obtained in the subjects of H.S or equivalent examinations or through ICAR conducted entrance exam for students interested in applying from other states.

The course curriculum mainly focuses on various disciplines that are quintessential to form an overall viewpoint of various aspects that govern the growth, culture, well-being, processing, procuring and management of Fishes and finally extension of these scientific approaches to the fisher folks at the grass root level as well as industrialists of our country for the betterment of the fish resources, which after rice and wheat is potentially the most important food crop that the country has to offer. Besides 4 years graduation degree, the campus at Garia offers a Master's in 9 departments and also a PhD in 7 departments as of now. The faculty is also accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The campus is complete with a Processing plant for Fish products and also many ponds and hatchery units that are required for imparting the skills required to students and research scholars.

Being a professional course as it is, the main goal is to train and create entrepreneurs who pioneer in the art of Pisciculture, its administration and management. Students can also apply for Government jobs, or participate in government funded projects in central research institutes, furthermore they can sought for higher education and research themselves, Choose teaching as their profession, and also seek a position in private fishing industries that are based generally on the culture and post harvesting, which is a highly profitable scope as well. Recruiters generally come towards the last semester in the final year. And students are eligible to apply from the (4rth year) final year itself. Almost all students are placed. I completed my master's from here from the Department of Fisheries Engineering and Technology and on completion am seeking opportunities for a PhD.

Fees and Financial Aid

Being a State Government owned University, the semester wise fees for graduate students is Rs. 5,710, Master's students' semester wise fees being Rs. 2,750 for West Bengal domicile Candidates. For students coming from outside the state, the fees are quite high. There are various merit based scholarships that depend on the marks obtained by a student in every semester.

Campus Life

Annual sports, Freshers and Farewell of Students along with Ravindra Jayanti and Agomoni, that is held at the starting of the Durga Puja are some programs that are annually held on the campus. Books and journals are available.

Hostel Facilities

The rooms are complete with all facilities that are essential for comfortable accommodation and providing a good environment for pursuing one's studies. A bed, a chair and table, a rack and a shelf are provided per student. The mess is run by the students with workers provided by the university, food is really good and the quality maintained under the strict standards that are set by the mess committee, also consisting of students. Students need to apply for the availing hostel facilities, which is generally allotted based on the distance of home from the faculty. The locality is semi urban, with almost all facilities available in and around.

The exam pattern was good. Moderate paper was there. Examiner had done a great job. For the curriculum we always had to pay extra money. In our 7th sem, we had all India tour, we did have any practical classes or theory exam still we had to pay for the practical and library not only that we had to pay for the trip as well.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Faculty of the university is very experienced about the course. The Faculty to students ratio is nearly 1:10. Every semester has two exams. One is mid-term exam which is organized internally for 30 marks and another one is end term exam of which questions are external and for 50 marks. There are also practical examination of 20 marks. Each students has to qualify both theory and practical exam in order to get dgree.

Placement Experience:

It's not fixed at all. Placement is in the hands of the HOD of various departments. After a bachelor's degree students can easily afford on or off-campus with 3-4LPA. After my bachelor's degree, my personal plan is to complete MFSc as after the completion of my post-graduate job profile would be higher than BFSc.

In the 4th year, students are eligible for campus placements. Students studying here mainly aim for Fishery Extension Officer (Govt. Post) but due to conflict of the demands, the recruitment is halted for now. Campus placements are not at all regular. The companies that visit here are CP, Biostadt etc. The faculty is planning to open a recruitment cell for regular campusing.

College management committee has done an excellent work in maintaining the integrity of thr campus. With fewer student density, the association among the students and teachers had been a blessing. Not to worry about non academic staffs are helpful in their own ways giving this campus a glossy look.
