Remarks
Faculty of Fishery Sciences is a college under the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences and it is accredited by ICAR. It is the only Government college for studying Fisheries (B.F.Sc) in West Bengal. The admission process is based on the marks (Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology/ English) in the higher secondary examination. A merit list is published after scrutinizing the application forms and then the admission procedure is conducted. The fees per Semester including hostel charges is Rs.5710. The college has courses under eight departments. The nine departments are namely Aquaculture/ Fish Processing Technology/ Aquatic Environment management/ Fishery Engineering/ Fisheries economics/ Fisheries resource management/ Aquatic Animal Health/ Fish Nutrition/ Fisheries Extension. The college has a good faculty of teachers and also well-maintained classrooms and food mess facility. The hostel is slightly overcrowded.
Course Curriculum Overview
Most of the faculty members are PhD holders and have good knowledge and experience. Smart classrooms are present for convenient learning. Fieldworks and practicals should be conducted more presently there is a lacking in this aspect. Every Department (i.e 9 ) has an average number of 2 to 6 Professors. I selected this college because it is the only one in West Bengal. The course curriculum is well taught and faculty members are also student-friendly. The exams are moderate to tough level. In a semester, One midterm of 30 marks, practical of 20 marks and end term of 50 marks is conducted i.e total of 100 marks exam in a semester. The midterm is conducted internally but the end term questions are external. The terms are conducted timely and with sincerity.
Placement Experience
In the 4th year, students are eligible for campus placements. Students studying here mainly aim for Fishery Extension Officer (Govt. Post) but due to conflict of the demands, the recruitment is halted for now. Campus placements are not at all regular. The companies that visit here are CP, Biostadt etc. The faculty is planning to open a recruitment cell for regular campusing.
Fees and Financial Aid
Fees structure -college fees (Rs.4410) and hostel charges (Rs.1300) i.e a total of Rs.5710 per semester (6 months). This fees structure has been stable for a long time now. No hike was there in a recent time span of 10 years for sure. Students under reservation quota generally apply for Oasis Scholarship (by Govt.) or other schemes also. University scholarship is the available amount of Rs.3600 per Semester given based on merit only. University scholarship is given to 30% of the student mass in a class based on the merit list of previous year mark sheet for example for 2nd-year students Scholarship is given based on their aggregate marks (merit list) of 1st year. But the University scholarship distribution is not at all regular. Most of the time it is delayed.
Campus Life
The College campus is very beautiful with greenery. Annual sports and cultural meet is conducted every year in the college in the month of November or December (approx.) and Central sports and cultural meet is conducted in University every year during January or February. Our college has won many prizes simultaneously in sports and cultural field at University level and also national level. The Library is enriched with a huge number of books and journals and also has Wi-Fi and A/C room. The classrooms are air-conditioned and provided with a projector facility for better learning. The college has a Union that includes sports and cultural committees that look upon the requirements and maintenance in the respective fields. College fest and a reunion were held in September 2020 for the very first time and it was a huge success.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are a little congested. Each room has accommodation of 4 students which if 3 would have been better. The meal quality is above good than any other Government colleges. Rooms are with a balcony and most of the rooms are airy. Racks, Tables, Chairs, Cot are present. Only the bedding is to be arranged by the student. Overall the hostel is very much affordable. Most of the day's meals included rice, daal, seasonal vegetables, fries and fish/chicken. Once or twice a week the menu is veg where paneer is given.
