Remarks

The administration can be hard to handle sometimes, profeesors might be making fun of your little knowledge on some days but on most days, Miranda House will prove to be a home that one will not have enough of in three years.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course was new. We were only the second batch of students with the new Choice Based Credit System. The curriculum was planned meticulously and it's a wonderful syllabus. However, optional papers and what is offered will depend on availability of profeesors who have pursued the course and one might be disappointed if the desired paper is not offered by the department. Till date, we have very little idea of how we were marked. We were told the marking is donee following a system of comparison with an average mark but this was never confirmed. The course is relevant and insightful and a thorough understanding of it will prepare students for further studies.

Placement Experience

1.5

There wasn't much scope of placements or internships through the department or college for English students.

College Events

4

Cultural events like the Northeast food festival, the fest of the societies, the major college fest, the literary fest are among the major events of the annual year. Moreover, there are talks, seminars, film screenings, discussions, every month held by different societies. Each society events differ in how many people attend depending on the established standing of the society. The numbers can range from 50-100 during society events held every month and upto 1000 during the main college fest.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Tuition fee for B. A. (H) English was a little over 12, 000 for a year - an amount feasible for a middle class family. Additional charges would include security fees. There is transparency in the few breakdown. All the required information is given both online in the college website and also in the college brochure.

Fees and Financial Aid

No I did not availamy scholarship or educational loan from the college during the entirety of my three years in college.

Campus Life

College was a women's college so the ratio favoured one prominent gender unsurprisingly. However, the college did not have a problem with students who were transitioning genders and were on the path of discovering their gender. Students from across the country enjoy a safe space. Competitions held in college were really a crowd booster and saw participants from across the colleges in the country. The college tries hard to provide a safe space and is among the first colleges in Delhi University to have a Queer Collective as a formal society with funds. The college was also among the first to implement the ICC, a crucial body that addresses sensitive student issues. The college canteen is famous for its impeccable food and the warmest staff. The hostel is a wonderful home of three years for its residents and offers a host of interesting activities throughout the year. After much protests from the residents, the authorities listened to the residents and pushed back the curfew opening up accessibility options for female students and setting a precedent among women's hostels across the country.

Hostel Facilities

Yes. Hostel seats were few for each course - not rising above a handful for each course. Majority of students share room with another student while very few had to share rooms with two or three others.

Alumni/Alumna

Yes. The alumni of the college are now making news helping new aspirants get through the admissions procedure.

Admission

Miranda House is among the top colleges in India. Its English Department houses some of the most brilliant profeesors in the field. My father and I went touring through the colleges before the cut off lists were announced and I immediately took to the college. The staff was more than cordial and although there was a strike amongst the teaching staff, the non teaching staff was trying their best to help the students. If one wants admission to the college (just like any other college in DU) it is imperative that they get all their papers in order and have multiple copies of each. Parents aren't allowed to assist you therefore it would be wise if applying candidates are more hands-on with the application process rather than letting your parents handle it. The payment of college fees is through online mode so patience is key as the server may shut down after waiting in the line for the entire day. My percentage made through the first cut off for English. My marks were 98. 3 in best of four subjects and the cut-off in 2016 for English was 97. 5 in the generals category. The admission process is a harrowing experience but once you get in, it'll all be worth it.

Faculty

3.5

Depending on the number of current profeesors teaching under contract, the number of lecturers in the department stand between 15 - 20. Each of them are well qualfied in various topics of choice and all have have been awarded the Doctorate degree. The average age stands between 35-50 with some of them having published books by major publishing houses and all of them contributed to major research papers. They are well trained to communicate information to the students. For profeesors that might seem unlikely to impart knowledge at first, it is best to keep pushing them.

There's a placement cell and placement drives do happen in college but genuinely the package offered is not really considerable. After the 4th semester students are considered to sit in the placement drives though I would say it is not very efficient and fruitful.

There is a proctive college placement cell tied to every department and every semester/batch students via a placement coordinator who facilitates communication between the cell and students. Students are eligible for paid internships early in their college tenure, with placements following later. KPMG, upGrad Campus, Collegedunia, Deloitte are some of the large number of visiting companies and they offer guaranteed placements.

The college has really more to do with its placement cell because students are not getting opportunities as they expect. The companies which come for placement drive are from limited domains and they also offer very normal package.
