60, 000 AIEEE rankI chose Thapar firstly because my cousin brother is a passout of this college and he's doing really well. Secondly Thapar is a great place to pursue education from because of its ranking. Based on my rank I was being offered chemical engineering and biotechnology. Since I wanted to have a research based career, I went for biotechnology looking at the opportunities it holds.
Course Curriculum Overview
Not very challenging I think that at the undergraduate level, the difficulty level should be a bit more than what it is at Thapar. Subjects are interesting and the curriculum is well planned. The electives are relevant and indirectly helped me to enhance my core skills.Like in the third year I chose nanotechnology as an elective. The faculty was outstanding and the knowledge of this subject might help me in future if I wish to venture into the domains of nanobiotechnology.
Internships Opportunities
Not much help was provided by college for this. Most of the students applied off campus or went through personal recommendation of professors. None of the students was offered stipend, in my knowledge.
Placement Experience
Pretty good. For somebody who wants a good career, a lot of opportunities are available. There is a plethora of companies of all kinds (core/ consultancy/ IT etc) which recruit students.
College Events
There are a few major fests of the college both inter as well as intra. There are nation wide techno-cultural fests like Saturnalia. Main participants are the major colleges of North India. There is an inter year literary fest 'Elixir', an inter hostel fest 'Acumen'.We even have a sports fest 'Urja' which is a pretty grand affair.
Fee Structure And Facilities
I think the fee is pretty hefty. The cost cumulated over 4 years turned out to be an expensive affair. As a special mention, Thapar leaves no opportunity to mint money. You have to pay for literally everything. Not marking attendance in the hostel, not signing out while leaving the hostel, for getting a duplicate copy of an original document ( the cost of getting a duplicate copy of a semester's cg card is 1000 rupees per copy), for paying the mess bill late, for keeping a room heater during winters, for not passing the exam in the first attempt and most importantly, for being unable to meet the 75% attendance criteria.
Fees and Financial Aid
None that I know of.I think that can be checked from the website.Fee waivers and scholarships are provided to top rank holders in a batch based on their GPA and AIEEE ranks.
Campus Life
Gender ratios vary from branch to branch. Like my branch has 20 girls and just 4 boys, while mechanical engineering has 150 boys and just one girl. There are a large number of societies in this college which help students in several ways. Name anything and you'll most probably have a society for that. If you don't, you can think of starting one by yourself. You'll have all the support you need from college (I'd make a special mention of the current dean of students affairs here. He is an extremely helpful and supportive person). Not much of politics is prevalent in Thapar, as far as I know. Even if some of it is encountered once in a while, it is healthy and helps in all round development of students making them ready to face the real world.
Hostel Facilities
Mess food is good. It is getting better with time.Hostel facilities are okay, I would say. Not all final year students were provided with a single room which should have been looked into as most of the final year students are preparing for something or the other and hence need privacy. There's a space crunch as they admit a lot of students but don't have sufficient accommodation for them.
Alumni/Alumna
The junior-senior bond is strong among students. This is majorly because they get to interact with each other by working together in societies and different events.
Exam Structure
Exams happen twice in a semester mid sem test followed by the end sem test. Lab evaluations and quizzes are taken preceeding the mst and the est.The schedule is not very hectic. (Although we cant call it chilled out). With proper time management it can be handled well.
Faculty
All kinds of professors have taught me. Some have been brilliant while others (a very small proportion though) hasn't taught that well. Most of the teachers are deeply concerned for the welfare of students and help them in all possible ways. Talking specifically of my department, it has got some of the finest teachers with vast experience and knowledge horizons.
