Remarks

Positives * Hostel Life Here was the first time for me in Hostel and I got many Friends and Learned Life a lot * Academics Teaching from Well experienced Faculties * There is wide range of Varieties to choose for Hostel food * Club Activities * Tathva and Ragam Negatives * Since I am a civil engineering student, core placements are less. Last year around 25 people got Core company placements, but this year only 6 got and the core company placements for the civil stream. Placements in this year have decreased because of economic slowdown

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

I am a Final year student in B. Tech. For completing b. Tech you have to get 160 credits. B. tech consists of 4 years and 8 Semesters. These 160 credits are split into these 8 semesters. NIT Calicut is a deemed university. That is it's End semester exams are conducted by itself. From my first year to 3rd year, the exam pattern was like: there will be 2 test, each of 20 marks and internal marks ( Continous evaluation ) for 10 marks, rest of the 50 marks is for End Semester Examination. Now this pattern has changed, the end semester exam is the same as the previous pattern for 50 marks. Now instead of 2 test, we will have only one mid-semester test which is for 30 marks and the rest 20 marks are for internal marks. For passing a subject you should get at least 30 marks.

Placement Experience

3.5

Yes, we have a department for Training and Placements. In 3rd year there are a lot of companies come here to recruit as an intern. CS and Electronics students have maximum offers. For civil engineering only one company came, that was LnT ECC and took 3 people from us( a batch of 120 students who are graduating in 2020). The stipend they( LnT ) provided was 8000 per month. So internship opportunities are maximum for CS and ECE students. Some companies even gave 1 lakh per month to interns. Coming to final year Placements. CS and ECE departments will have more than 95% placements and their average annual package will be around 10-12 LPA. This year the highest offer was 50 LPA. Coming to Civil engineering department the companies this time was low because of the economic condition existing now in India. 3 Core companies came and took 6 people from 120 civil engineering students. Those who have coding skills can easily get placed. Since many IT companies to recruit us.

College Events

4.5

TATHVA and RAGAM are the important fests celebrated in our College. TATHVA is the annual tech fest conducted by the 3rd years of our College. Tathva is the largest tech fest in Kerala. There will be various workshops, Lectures and Technical events for tech enthusiasts. RAGAM is the annual Cultural Fest of our College and conducted by the 4th years. It is the largest cultural fest in Kerala. Many students across Kerala participate in different cultural events and For Ragam we have DJ nights. TATHVA is conducted in October and RAGAM in January

Fee Structure And Facilities

Tuition Fees is based on the economic status of the student. This fee is the same for all the NITs across India. For a year fees is 1. 25L ( one year consists of 2 semesters ) for students whose family income is greater than 5 LPA. And for students in economic groups, 1 to 5 LPA has a fee of 42k per annum. for Students whose Family income is less than 1 LPA, there are no tuition fees. There are other charges like library fees, exam fees, etc for which every student has to equally. ( Roughly around 10000 per year )

Fees and Financial Aid

You can have various scholarships based on Economic and Social Status. For Keralites, there are E Grants provided by the Kerala Government. Coming about Loans, there is no difficulty in taking a loan for this College. I still remember during the registration day in my first year many banks came here and opened their stall to get customers. SInce NIT Calicut is one of the top engineering Colleges in India, Loan is not a difficult thing

Campus Life

4.5

First, about Extra-Curricular activities, there are various clubs and associations. Like NSS, HVG, Club for Mathematics, Adventure Club, Dance, and Dramatics Club, etc. Many Department has its own associations. I am a member of the Civil Engineering Association. We will conduct many lectures and events related to Civil Engineering For sports, we have our own Gym, Swimming Pool, Cricket Ground, Football Ground, Tennis, Badminton courts, etc. Some hostels have carrom board and Table tennis also.

Hostel Facilities

5

My first room is a Double seated room. You can't choose the roommates in 1st year. In the 2nd and 3rd year, we have 4 seated rooms where you can choose your roommates and you will get a room with your friends. In final years every student is provided a single-seated room ( Every student will be busy with project and Placement Processes )

Alumni/Alumna

Yes, i got friends from seniors through our CEA ( Civil Engineering Association ) and they were very helpful in academic and career-related doubts. For Conducting Civil Department fest PRITHVI 2018 we got financial support from our alumnus. Like these, they support us whenever there is a need.

Admission

I got NIT Calicut by Clearing JEE Main in 2016 which held around mid of April in that year. JEE Main is the exam which is considered for admission into NIT s and for writing JEE Advanced if you have cleared JEE Mains. Rank in JEE Main exam is important for the admission of NITs. Rank is calculated from the mark scored in JEE Main Exam. I got around 140 marks in JEE Main exam and got rank around 15k in all India. Based on this rank you can choose top NITs, for IITs you need to clear JEE Advanced Exam. After clearing the exam there will be a College Allocation Process conducted by JoSAA(Joint Seat ALlocation AUthority). Through JoSAA you opt for different Colleges and different streams. Based on the JEE Main rank you can into your preferred choices. I'm Keralite and I opt for NIT Calicut when was in my Home state and based on my rank i got Civil Engineering Stream.

Faculty

4.5

All our faculties are well experienced and they should have at least a Ph. D. in order to become an associate professor and then to the professor. Now in the Civil Engineering Department, we have 8 Professors and 21 Associate Professors. In Civil engineering, there are many divisions like Water Resource engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, etc. There are different faculties to teach these subjects. Some times Adhoc faculties also come. Adhoc Faculties are those who will be having a Mtech in a particular stream. They are not permanent. Quality of teaching from professors is high level and some times there is a chance that those Adhoc faculties can't reach our expectations(low-quality teaching ). For evaluating our teachers we have Teacher's Evaluation after every semester to rate the teachers.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is the worst. Teachers rush through the portions so that they can finish at the earliest. It may be because the university has a unjustifiable timetable. There is very little practicals given. The ones that are given are just for namesake.

Currently placements are bit low, due to inflation, but compared to other colleges like KMEA, etc we have better placements similar to Muthoot and all. The students usually start appearing for campus placements in their 6th semester. The training for the campus placements is started for all the students from the 4th semester. Many companies visited for campus placements. But one main problem is that most of them were low packages. Around 4LPA. Some were between 4-6 and a very few between 6-10. Most of them got placed in our batch in some company.
