Important Formulas of CAT Calendars
Given below are some of the important formulas which must be kept in mind while attempting questions related to Calendars in the CAT exam.
- Odd Days: If the question is asking to find the day of the week on a given date, the students need to use the concept of odd days.
- The number of days more than the completed week are called odd days.
- Leap Year: Every year which is divisible by 4 is a leap year and every fourth century is a leap year and no other century is a leap year.
- For instance, Each of the years 1948, 2004, 1676 - each of them is a leap year.
- 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 2000 - each of them is a leap year.
- 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 1800, 2100 - none among them is a leap year.
- Ordinary year: The year which is not a year is called an ordinary year. An ordinary year has a total of 365 days
- Counting of odd days: 1 year has a total of 52 weeks and 1 day. Hence, 1 ordinary year has 1 odd day
- 1 leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days. Hence, 1 leap year has 2 odd days.
- 100 years has 76 ordinary years and 24 leap years
- = (76 x 1 + 24 x 2) odd days = 124 odd days. = (17 weeks + days) 5 odd days. Hence, the number of odd days in 100 years is five
- The number of odd days in 200 years will be (5 X 2)= 3 odd days
- The number of odd days in 300 years will be (5 X 3)= 1 odd day
- The number of odd days in 400 years will be (5 X 4+1)= 0 odd day

Important Formulas for CAT Clocks
Few formula’s that you should know to solve questions related to clocks are as follow:
- 60-minute space = 360° = 1 hour
- 1-minute space = 6° = 1 minute
- 5-minute space = 6° x 5 = 30° = 5 minutes
- Right Angle or Perpendicular = 15-minute spaces apart
- Right Angle or Perpendicular = 22 times in 12 hours or 44 times in 24 hours (1 day)
- Speed of minute hand = 6 dpm
- Straight Angle or Straight Line or 180° = 30-minute space apart
- Straight Angle = 11 times in 12 hours or 22 times in 24 hours (1 day)
- Angle traced by hour hand in 12 hrs = 360°
- Angle traced by minute hand in 60 min. = 360°
- Speed of hour hand = 0.5 dpm (degree per minute)
- Angle of the hour hand from vertical at N o’clock = 30N
Problems on angles of Clocks
Before we actually start solving problems on angles, we need to get couple of basic facts clear:
- Speed of the hour hand = 0.5 degrees per minute (dpm) {The hour hand completes a full circle or 360 degrees in 12 hours or 720 minutes}
- Speed of the minute hand = 6 dpm {The minute hand completes a full circle in 60 minutes}
- At ‘n’ o’ clock, the angle of the hour hand from the vertical is 30n
Tricks to Solve CAT Calendar Questions
Finding Day of a Date by Using a Reference Date
- We will be using the days method.
- The number of excess days is used to calculate the number of days the calendar has moved by.
- 1.1.1973—Tuesday
Due to 1973, the calendar will go ahead by 1 day, similarly, due to 1974—1 day, due to 1975—1 day, and due to 1976—2 days. So, in four years, the calendar will go ahead by 5 days.
- Using the unitary method, in four years, the calendar will move ahead by 5 days.
- So, in 24 years, the calendar will move ahead by 30 days. Hence, the calendar will move ahead by 2 days.
- So, 1.1.1997 will be two days ahead of Tuesday, that is, Thursday.
Through Manual Calculation
You have to memorize the code table for this method.
| Month | Leap Year | Non-Leap Year |
|---|---|---|
| January | 0 | 1 |
| February | 3 | 4 |
| March | 4 | 4 |
| April | 0 | 0 |
| May | 2 | 2 |
| June | 5 | 5 |
| July | 0 | 0 |
| August | 3 | 3 |
| September | 6 | 6 |
| October | 1 | 1 |
| November | 4 | 4 |
| December | 6 | 6 |
Example: Find the date of 15th August 1947:
- Add the Date + Month code of August + Last two digits of year + (Last two digits of year/4)
- [x] represents the greatest integer value of x
- So, corresponding to 15th August 1947—15 + 3 + 47 + 11 = 76
- Now, divide this value by 7 to find out the remainder.
- If the remainder is 0 then it is a Saturday.
- If the remainder is 1 then it is a Sunday.
- If the remainder is 2 then it is a Monday.
- If the remainder is 3 then it is a Tuesday.
- If the remainder is 4 then it is a Wednesday.
- If the remainder is 5 then it is a Thursday.
- If the remainder is 6 then it is a Friday.
- Here, remainder is 6, so 15th August 1947 was a Friday.(
- It should have been a ‘Free Day.)
