Dr. Sheel Singh has been working as the Head of Bio Science Department at KL Mehta Dayanand College For Women, Faridabad, Haryana. She has done M.Sc. in Botany from Kanpur University followed by M.Phil. and PhD from University of Delhi as part of her education. And she has a total teaching experience of 27 amazing years.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Throughout my teaching career, I have held a number of key positions including being the NCC Coordinator for 1 year, NSS Coordinator for 5 years, Youth Festival incharge for 6 years as convenor, Dispensary Incharge for 10 years and now HOD for the last 12 years. And the biggest factor behind my long association with the dynamic and challenging world of education is my passion towards teaching and learning and serving the society as a whole.


Being the Head of the Bio Science Department, what is your philosophy of leadership? 

I strongly believe in the relevant distribution of work among team members as per their skills and experience. And hence I always promote the atmosphere of teamwork by regularly encouraging people around me and providing them with the right opportunity to upskill. Because, I know that by motivating, communicating and following our objectives, we can do anything and everything.


How does the curriculum of your institute ensure the best practices of industry?

As we are affiliated to MDU Rohtak, hence the curriculum of our institution is mainly based on the syllabus prescribed by the University. But in order to fill any kind of possible gaps between academia and industry, our institution has created a perfect environment to balance the theoretical aspects and practical exposure of a subject. And we all work as a team to fulfill the institution goals and fix challenges to keep pace with the fast changing current academic world.


What do you think should be your college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

In the coming 10 years, our goal is to successfully implement the National Education Policy of 2020, which was recently introduced by the government. In other terms, we will now focus more on skills development and overall growth of our students. In addition to this, we should prioritize making students a good human being and socially responsible citizens by inculcating in them good ethical values.


When you first joined the KL Mehta, what was your vision for it and how far have you come in implementing those aims?

When I joined KL Mehta College, my vision was to improve the teaching methodologies of our college and shift from traditional teaching boards to smart boards. Apart from this, I also wanted to emphasize more on practical than theory, and conduct more extracurricular activities to bring out hidden talents of our bright students. And we all are working with everyone's support and guidance to fulfill these goals as soon as possible.

What would you like people to know about your college that makes it unique and different from others?

Our college has a very supportive management, highly efficient, sincere, hardworking, dedicated and experienced team of faculty members to teach and train students as per industry standards and society expectations. Additionally, we have a very spacious, clean and green campus, enough facilities for research and development and relevant platforms to improve the social and cultural skills of young minds. Lastly, there is a big playground for students to play various sports and games, state-of-the-art infrastructure to support dynamic and diverse learning needs of students followed by a modern library, laboratory and fully secular and non-political environment. In other terms, KL Mehta is a perfect place for all of you to pursue your dreams.


What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths?

The main pillars of our college's greatest strengths is unity of our staff members followed by understanding and coordination between the management, staff and students. Apart from this, we have maintained a disciplined environment on campus for effective implementation of courses. And we regularly interact with parents and guardians of our students. 


According to you, what major changes Covid-19 has brought in the education sector so far?

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought a plethora of changes in the world of education and it is clearly visible to all. First and foremost, we have shifted from physical learning to online teaching using Wi-Fi facilities and smart boards. Also, events and activities like conferences and workshops are being organized in digital mode nowadays. 


What kind of placement support does your college offer to students?

We do have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to train students by organizing skills enhancement training programs, workshops, industry institution interaction sessions, and mock interviews etc. 


How is your relationship with the students of your college?

I have maintained a very cordial, approachable, friendly and positive relationship with all my students and I give special and undivided attention to those who are weak in studies as compared to others.

What are some of the most important functions that you need to adhere to, being the Department Head at KL Mehta?

I have been NCC Coordinator, NSS Coordinator, Youth Fest In-Charge and Dispensary Incharge throughout my career. And at present, I am also a member of various committees like IQAC, Advisory, Purchase and Disposal, Time Table table, Anti-Ragging, Library, Sports, Green Committee, Research, Cleanliness and Cultural committee, so I have to adhere a lot of responsibilities in addition to ensuring my students get finest quality and employment oriented education to compete confidently in this competitive world.


What kinds of challenges do you usually face in upgrading the educational quality and infra of the college?

As KL Mehta is a women's college, we face the issue of students not attending the classes regularly and everyone has their own personal reasons including early marriage and pregnancy etc. Sometimes, financial constraints stop them from pursuing their dreams and build a bright future for themselves. Apart from this, another hurdle for our institution is that our syllabus is not aligned with current development and demands for a long time now. 


How do you establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

For the purpose of maintaining a good relationship with everyone and establishing a healthy working-learning atmosphere in college, I regularly interact with all the people including management, staff and students through a transparent, trustworthy and respectful communication channel. And while interacting, I carefully listen to them and I always make sure to be available whenever someone needs my guidance and support.


Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youths?

As education is a blend of morality and discipline, hence I would advise my dear students to be strong, ethically, physically and mentally. Also, learn new things regularly and start reading habits.
