The media and entertainment industry is expected to reach $3 trillion by 2030 worldwide; India, with its rapidly expanding media sector growing at an annual rate of 10%, have been key parts in supporting that prediction.

India has over 800 television channels, 140,000 newspapers, and currently has close to 80 million Internet users, making it one of the fastest-growing media markets in the entire world. With a digital landscape from news portal through podcasts and media startups, the 21st Century is arguably the most powerful age for someone who makes a career telling stories. In recent years, the power of storytelling has become more than just words; today, it strongly impacts areas of communication, such as public opinion, as well as a society's view of how to develop positive global trends, including the development of Chandigarh University's position in this very important area.

The Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) program at Chandigarh University is intended to produce the next generation of media leaders. With its cutting-edge facilities, widespread industry connections, and a curriculum combining traditional media skills with the latest digital technology, CU will prepare its students for future changes in the media industry.

What Makes This Program Stand Out?

The Journalism and Mass Communication programme at Chandigarh University integrates creative thinking, advanced technology, and hands-on experience to provide students with an exceptional education. The curriculum connects students with the industry through regular industry-related workshops and live projects with leading media companies (e.g. PRSI, Futuready Media). In addition to the various elective options, including Print and Digital; TV and Radio; Advertising and Public Relations; and OTT and Film Studies, Chandigarh University's Journalism and Mass Communication programme has allowed students to become well-rounded individuals by providing extensive training in all aspects of media.

The following features differentiate this programme from others:

1.Industry-Linked Curriculum

Chandigarh University's collaborations with major industry leaders, such as Futuready Media and PRSI, allow for:

  • Workshops and training programmes

These collaborations provide students the opportunity to link theoretical knowledge with real world media challenges.

2. Diverse Specializations

The Journalism and Mass Communication program at Chandigarh University gives four specialization areas - in Print and Digital, TV and Radio, Ad & PR, and OTT & Film Studies from which students can select one in each semester to customize their learning path.

The program also offers interdisciplinary electives in areas such as Integrated Marketing Communication, Intercultural Communication, Political Communication, Elements of Film Direction and film appreciation, Media and Cultural Representation, Elements of Cinematography, Brand Management, Media and Democracy, etc., so that students can experience topics of study in other departments, thereby providing them with a well-rounded education.

3.Infrastructure & Practical Exposure

Chandigarh University's Journalism & Mass Media Programs are backed by an excellent infrastructure, which allows students to use state-of-the-art equipment, including TVs, community radio stations, editing labs, photography labs, etc.

Through this outstanding facility, students have access to cutting-edge software through their Adobe Creative Cloud accounts (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.); they will learn how to handle cameras, produce radio programs, create advertising materials, promote themselves through public relations efforts, and analyze digital media metrics for a well-rounded education.

Radio Punjab 90.0 is a community radio station that is operated from the Chandigarh facility and serves a specific audience (users of the station) with programming targeted toward education, advancement, and community cultural issues.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Media's Production Control Room (PCR) and the University's Production Control Room (PCR) have been established to educate students in broadcast media.

Chandigarh University has its own Production Control Room and professional TV studio. Students get to work on real news setups, shoot shows, learn video mixing, and get hands-on experience in broadcasting.

Cultural and Industrial Exposure

Every semester, our students participate in three external trips to industry settings, including newsrooms, television studios, radio stations and film production facilities. During these excursions, they are given first-hand experience of how the industry operates.

Our department also organises workshops and seminars on media-specific topics such as news anchoring, filmmaking, investigative reporting and digital marketing. Each semester, an expert in their field will conduct these workshops/seminars and provide students with valuable advice based on current trends and practices in the media world.

4.Holistic Development & Extra-Curricular Exposure

Due to the amount of coursework required of our students, we encourage them to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities related to their major, including creating short films, producing a documentary, taking part in a photography project or establishing and maintaining a campus news website.

Students are also able to develop their skills further by completing a 30-hour Value Added Course (VAC) each semester. Topics covered include filmmaking, investigative reporting, news anchoring and digital marketing. By completing the VAC, students will have developed a well-rounded understanding of the media industry. Students can also take four courses offered by different departments, called Interdisciplinary Studies.

For the last five years, quite a number of students have experienced international research internships, especially with one of the largest media and entertainment giants, the Walt Disney World, in the U.S.
