Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
My program is currently ranked 44th in computer science worldwide. I chose North Carolina State University (NCSU) for several reasons: the better weather, improved commuting options, affordable cost of living, welcoming community, career opportunities, part-time work options, professional involvement opportunities, and career fairs.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
- I may not meet the expectations for my application, and several factors could contribute to this. These include my GPA, my extracurricular activities, and the limited research information I provided. Some of these colleges offer research programmes, which might also affect my chances of acceptance.

Tips to enhance your application
- Improve your Statement of Purpose (SOP) with a clear purpose and enthusiasm. Your academic grade sheets should be mailed by your undergraduate university. Achieve good scores in IELTS/TOEFL and GRE; this is a way to stand out.
Admission Experience
- I chose the United States for its growing career opportunities in computer science, which will be beneficial for my career. In terms of academic reputation, NC State University's computer science programme ranks 44th worldwide.
- The university offers popular programmes in Computer Science, Computer Networking, and Computer Engineering. Additionally, the location has beautiful weather, not too cold and not too warm. The career opportunities are promising, with multiple companies visiting the campus to conduct hackathons and career sessions, helping graduates launch their careers. Overall, I loved my experience at NC State.
Class Schedule
- The classes will be held 3 to 4 days a week, and you can choose your courses and their timings. If a schedule doesn’t work for you, you can select it in a later semester, offering a completely flexible arrangement.
- Each class will consist of 2-hour sessions between 9 AM and 7 PM EST. There is a significant Indian presence on our campus, and the programme is quite popular. Additionally, you should plan to spend at least 4 hours at home for assignments, self-study, and job applications.
Faculty
- The faculty-to-student ratio typically includes a professor and multiple teaching assistants (TAs) for each course. Class sizes can range from 60 to 120 students, although some courses may have as few as 40 students.
- Generally, the larger the class, the more TAs will be available. If we have any questions or need assistance, both TAs and professors hold office hours where we can address our doubts. Additionally, faculty occasionally offer TA and research assistant (RA) opportunities, as well as full-time positions.
Campus Life
- The campus spans over 1,500 acres of land and is a land-grant university with more than 30 campuses. We have some of the best libraries in the world, including the Hunt Library, which ranks in the top 10 globally.
- For sports, students have free access to the impressive Carmichael Gym. In terms of medical facilities, there is a clinic located on campus that is easily accessible to students. Additionally, there are numerous clubs, both technical and non-technical, that students can join. There are also many volunteering opportunities available.
Part Time Jobs
- Indian students often work in cafeterias, libraries, dining halls, gyms, and as resident assistants (RAs), teaching assistants (TAs), or technical desk assistants in student unions.
- The pay for these positions typically ranges from $10 to $30 per hour, depending on the type of role. It is relatively easy to secure these positions, as there is a university portal available for job applications. Interviews are conducted for the roles, and successful candidates will be offered positions.
- The typical pay for graduate students is through the Graduate Student Support Program (GSSP), which waives tuition for that semester. However, the Computer Science (CS) programme does not offer GSSP for teaching assistants (TAs). Instead, TAs usually earn between $18 and $20 per hour. There are also research assistant (RA) opportunities available where GSSP is provided for CS graduates.
- On-campus jobs generally pay around $10 per hour, while technical part-time jobs can pay up to $26 per hour. Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours per week during the summer.
Placement
- Over 85% of students find jobs after completing the course, either immediately or at least within a year. The average salary is around $90,000. You can find these jobs through career fairs, networking sessions, and even cold applications. How well you represent yourself and connect with peers during networking sessions plays a crucial role in landing a job. The outcome can vary for everyone.
Accommodation
- There are WhatsApp groups where you can connect with others, and there is also Maitri, an Indian graduate student association. Maitri helps link newcomers with existing groups and provides roommate finder sheets that match roommates based on preferences. Additionally, some online agents can help with this as well. Joining the Maitri student association is a great way to get started!
