I chose the United States for its growing career opportunities in computer science, which will be beneficial for my career. In terms of academic reputation, NC State University's computer science programme ranks 44th worldwide. The university offers popular programmes in Computer Science, Computer Networking, and Computer Engineering. Additionally, the location has beautiful weather, not too cold and not too warm. I applied for the following universities: University of California San Diego (rejected, too ambitious) University of Florida, Gainesville (rejected, no clue why – maybe small batch size) Northeastern University (received admit, but not for Boston – reason: applied late) North Carolina State University (admitted) San Jose State University (admitted) Arizona State University (admitted) State University of New York-Buffalo (admitted) Indiana University Bloomington (admitted) University of Texas at Dallas (admitted) University of Maryland Baltimore County (admitted) It was a no-brainer. NC State was my top choice after UCSD's rejection. The cost of living here is low. It is a great university overall with top-notch facilities, amenities and support. Admission process and eligibility – SOP, 3 LORs, transcripts, GRE and TOEFL scores (usually the quant score should be 165+). Smooth admission process, no challenges as such. Fall 2024 intake. I applied to the following universities: USC - Admitted NCSU - Admitted Oregon State University—Admitted ASU - Admitted Stony Brook - Admitted NYU Tandon – Admitted with scholarship Texas A&M - Rejected (reason - profile not strong enough, maybe becasue i was a freshman and from tier 3 engineering college in india) I chose this because of the cost. The cost of tuition as well as the cost of living was high for both of the good (highly ranked) admits I had gotten—that is USC and NYU. Another reason is that i had heard that NYU does not have enough availability of on-campus jobs (which is still true—confirmed with friends at that university) and NCSU does (which is also true—I have gotten an on-campus job since week 1 of landing in the USA). Had also heard that the location of a university doesn't matter for a job because applications are done online (I can confirm this is true after experiencing it). So overall, to keep total cost and risk low, I went with the slightly lower-ranked NCSU to save on the cost of education. The admission process involved paying a $500 deposit (deducted from fees later), paying health insurance and then registering for classes. I'm not sure about minimun score but i had a GRE of 320 and a TOEFL of 114. Had heard from friends that a GRE score of 320 is the minimum for ncsu but not sure. The admission process was good. NCSU held webinars and helped us with each step of the process. these were live and we could ask questions. this helped during the period of settling there. they also told us stuff about the USA that helped us settle. didn't face any challenges; I would highlight connecting with seniors and finding info from them I had applied for the Fall 2024 intake. I had applied in Jan 2024 and got the admit in early Mar 2024. I finalized my admission in Apr 2024 and reached the US in Aug 2024. I have applied to 5 colleges for masters in CS 1. Rutgers, New Brunswick - admit 2. North Carolina State University - admit 3. Stony Brook University - admit 4. University of California, Irvine, LA - rejected due to < 320 GRE and no research experience. I confirmed admission to NCSU because in my opinion it was the best college of the 4 admissions I got. I chose this particular college because of good systems research prospects. The college had emphasis and bigger Computer engineering crowd that made it easier to upskill on systems software engineerig. The preferences to do Leetcode and solving assignments are minimal. The best OS course I have ever seen. Eligibility criteria is GRE (313-318) and high CGPA (8.7+), TOEFL. The admission experience was super smooth and comfortable. I applied to the Fall 2022 timeline. The major factor was that it is a public university and the housing in the area was somewhat cheap. Moreover, the systems software engineering courses in this university, especially operating systems is very good. The course prepares you for the software industry. I applied to five colleges: SUNY Buffalo, Stony Brook University, Rutgers University, NC State University, and UT Dallas. I was accepted by SUNY Buffalo and NC State University. Stony Brook also offered me admission but for a different specialised program. Unfortunately, I was rejected by Rutgers University and UT Dallas. In my opinion, I was rejected by Rutgers because it’s very competitive, especially for the Computer Science program, which has a high number of applicants. As for UT Dallas, I later realised that they require a score of 4.0 in the analytical writing section of the GRE, whereas I scored 3.5, which likely impacted my application. I chose this university because one of my cousins graduated from here and secured a good job, which gave me confidence in its career opportunities. Additionally, he lives here, so I had a familiar connection. I also learnt about the Research Triangle development project in Raleigh, which is a great hub for innovation and job prospects. I feel this university is underrated and has a lot to offer. The admission process was straightforward, similar to other universities. I filled out the application on the official university website, uploaded my academic documents and background information, and sent my GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores directly from the testing agency’s official site. The university accepts TOEFL and IELTS, and GRE is mandatory for some programs, including Computer Science. The minimum requirements are: IELTS: 7.0 TOEFL: At least 20 in each section (overall around 80). GRE: While no specific cutoff is mentioned, a score of 310+ is generally considered competitive.
