The Post Graduate Certificate in Geoinformatics (PGCGI) is a 6-month, 20-credit postgraduate-level certificate programme offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) through its School of Sciences (SOS). Delivered entirely in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, the programme familiarises learners with the fundamental concepts of geoinformatics technologies including acquisition, storage, processing, and dissemination of spatial information. The total programme fee is Rs 7,850 (plus applicable registration and development fees), with no entrance exam required. The curriculum was developed with inputs from eminent experts from ISRO, DRDO, IIT, C-DAC, DST, and IITM, making it a highly credible and industry-relevant qualification. The programme is particularly popular among geography, science, and engineering graduates, as well as defence personnel and teachers seeking to build expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and satellite navigation.
Admissions to PGCGI are offered twice a year in the January and July sessions. As of March 2026, the January 2026 session admission deadline has been extended to 30th March 2026 for ODL programmes. The next July 2026 session is expected to open in May 2026, with a tentative last date around October 2026 (based on the July 2025 session pattern).
