NIT Rourkela MA (Development Studies) Course Details
NIT Rourkela offers MA course in Development Studies as its postgraduate course. The course involves the learning about a wide range of aspects related to social and behavioural science where students get to know about prevailing socio-economic problems.
Course Duration: The duration of the course is 2 academic years which is spread over a span of four semesters. However, the course is also offered as a slow pace program for working individuals and is spread for a duration of 4 academic years. Each academic session is divided into two semesters, i.e, Autumn/ Odd semester (July – November) and Spring/ Even semester (January – May) each of approximately 17 weeks duration.

Each semester, excluding holidays and days when classes are suspended, shall have at least 80 working days (including examination dates). All subjects will have Lectures, Tutorials and Laboratory/ Design components (L–T–P).
Credits: Theory courses will comprise 3-4 credits whereas design or laboratory courses will comprise 2-3 credits. The total number of credits in the coursework and seminars in 1st and 2nd semesters together will range between 46 and 50 credits. Hence the entire 2 year programme will comprise 98-102 credits.
SIRE: MA programme will include a programme of “Short term Industrial or Research Experience (SIRE)” of 8 weeks duration after the 2nd semester for which the experience may be obtained in any reputed industry, research laboratory, IIT, NIT and any other equivalent organization. SIRE weighs 3 credits in 3rd semester and candidates will thus be required to submit a report for the same to the department. Summer work contributes 75% to the total marks and industrial tours contribute 25% to the same.
Project: MA students are required to carry out a major project in the final year under the guidance supervisors which weighs 4 credits each in pre final and final semesters. In addition, a 2 credits course on “Research Practice” in the 2nd semester is also carried out.
Assessment of Performance: Performance of students in each semester is assessed through Teacher’s Assessment which weighs 20%, mid term examinations weighing 30% and end semester examinations weighing 50% of the total. Class tests, assignments, tutorials, viva-voce, laboratory assignments, etc are the constituent components of continuous assessment process.
Registration for next semester: First semester candidates need to secure a SGPA of 5.00 in order to be eligible for registration next semester. For 2nd year registrations, candidates are required to earn a minimum of 32 credits and CGPA of 6.00.
