- 24 hours library
- Provides hands-on experience in industrial quality equipments and facilities
- Appreciating every culture and also have a DMU Indian society ( Conduct cultural programs, Holi celebrations etc..)
Dislikes
- About 150 to 300 students in one class (most of the time some students doesn't get seats)
- Running from one building to another building to next class (sometimes with the same Professor)
- Using code for submitting attendance (some students send codes to their friends who isn't present in class and they get attendance)
Admission Experience
- I applied to only two universities because I was too late to apply for September 2022 admissions and I was only left with few University options which provided course of my interest. One is De Montfort University Leicester (MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology) and other one is Ulster University Coleraine (MSc in Biotechnology Research). I received unconditional offer letter from both the Universities.
- I chose DMU because I liked this university and the course most, and it was also my option one in university choices. Only two of the UK University provided Masters in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. I'm interested in working in Pharmaceutical field and my background in biotechnology helped me to conclude in the choice of selecting this Course and University.
- First I received conditional offer letter and later after submitting all my documents I received an unconditional offer letter.
- After that, I had an interview with a dean from the university. In the interview, I was asked mostly about how I'm going to fund my course and support myself in the UK. After I passed the interview, they provided me with CAS. They didn't require any English skill-checking tests. That's one of the factors that makes getting admission to DMU easier.
- My overall admission experience with DMU was good, because my admission was done with the help of an overseas educational consultancy. The agency did most of the works on my behalf so everything went so smoothly.
- I applied for September 2022 intake. I completed my application process by the end of May 2022 and received conditional offer letter by 3rd week of June 2022. After submitting the required documents I received unconditional offer letter by 3rd week of July 2024. By the end of August 2022 I was interviewed by a delicate from De Montfort University to know about my funding and proficiency in English. The interview results were out by first week of September 2022. Then I applied for Visa which took about 15 working days. And by October 5th 2022 I was in UK and my classes started in October 2024.
Exam
- One of the reason I applied to De Montfort University is because they don't have any English profiency testing exam if we pass a certain criteria. It's a huge barrier to cross. Because I was a CBSE student and always scored 80% above marks in English that part was easier for me. 75% above marks in English in schools is important for admission.
- A self written Statement of purpose, Letter of recommendation from old school/ college head and department head, CV and all the original copies of educational certificates from high-school are the required documents. The document from bank showing our funding is the most important one.
- The interview was the most important part of admission. It was taken by a delicate from the University. The main purpose of interview is to check our proficiency in English and know about our funding. They also ask about our knowledge in the course, what made us choose this particular University and what made us choose UK.
Course Curriculum Overview
- It was a really difficult course with a strong curriculum. It was a strong mix of both practical and theoretical classes. It contains practical sessions, seminar classes, lecture classes, worksheet classes, small group sessions, large group sessions etc. They also provide academic helps for achieving good scores which is highly beneficial for international students who are new to UK educational system.
- The negative aspect is that my course had a entirely new pattern of exams which other people of my degree level experience in PHD.
- The positive aspect is the the University and faculty is ready to prepare us to face all of this. They provide all the help and support to International students.
- This course have both online and offline classes, mainly offline classes. Typical there is 3-5 days a week with 1 to 4 module a day. Each module is of 1 hour. The University timing is 9am to 5pm.
- The University have a special help desk to help students find part time jobs during the course period and they also help in placements after the course.
- My course has the least number of students because it is difficult to get in. In my batch there were 36 students and more than half of them were Indians. Typically this course have less than 40 students every year that's what makes this course special from rest of the courses provided by University which usually have 150 to 300 students per class. Almost half of the students in the University are Indians.
Fees
- Tuition fee: £16800 (International students) & £8400 (Home students). 50% of fees is paid before enrollment and rest of the 50% fees is paid after enrollment (we can pay that as two installments)
- Living expense for a year: £9207 (For outer London)
- Amount to be shown in account: Balance fees (£8400) + Living expense ( £9207)
- NHS Insurance: £750 ( According to year 2022)
- Visa fee: £675 ( According to year 2022)
- Medical charges: £27
- Estimate on monthly expenses: Rent- £400, Transportation- £200, Others- £250
Scholarship
- I didn't receive any scholarship during my course Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology for De Montfort University. I was late to apply for the scholarship as my admission was done in last minutes.
- One of my friend actually received scholarship from University. The amount was about £2000.
- It is heard that De Montfort University provides scholarship for about 10 to 25% students considering various categories.
Faculty
- From the faculty members to the professors everyone is kind hearted and helpful especially our Program leader Dr.Neill Horley.
- The faculty to student ratio of my course is 1:3. This have a positive impact and is highly beneficial.
- I would give a 100 on the Methodology of teaching of this course. They have chosen a perfect way to tutor and make as a master in the field of Biotechnology.
Campus Life
- De Montfort University have two main campus. One in Leicester, United Kingdom and other one in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
- They have four main faculties :
1. Health and Life Sciences
2. Business and Law
3. Art, Design and Humanities
4. Computing, Engineering and Media. - DMU has many sports facilities including swimming pool, fitness gym, dance studio. They also have a 24 hours open library. They have a student union called DSU . They conduct a variety of programs and have an International student support center.
- They have DMU Indian society which helps us to stay in our roots and gain connections with a lot of people. They conduct cultural programs and celebrate festivals like Holi.

Accommodation
- I opted for a Off- Campus Accommodation. It's was a 3 bedroom apartment, just a 10 minute walk from University. I found that place with the help of an agent.
- My monthly rent was £400 (Total of £1200 for whole apartment). Only the water bill was included with the rent. The electricity bill and gas bill was shared among the tenants.
- It was a three bedroom house with tables and wardrobe in each room, Kitchen, Bathroom, toilet, a common area and a study room.
- It is quite challenging to find a affordable accommodation. My recommendation for future students is to stay in University accommodations. That is better for a student as they will provide better facilities and will be safer. And the accommodation will be near the University.
- My accommodation was just a 10 minute walk from University. And most of the South Indians stay in off- Campus accommodation and North Indians Stay in On-campus accommodations.

Placement
- Less than 20 percent of my graduating batch secures employment within 6 months of completing their course in the field of study.
- The average salary range that most students in my program can expect to earn upon graduation is £24000.
- Students usually find job by networking and through online job portals. While we were students we went to pharmaceutical companies like Alma pharmaceuticals from University to learn more in this field in industrial level and to learn about job opportunities.
Part Time Jobs
- About 2-3 students typically secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions. The pay range for TA/RA/DA positions are about £23000 per annum in the beginning of the career. Based on the experience in the field pay range increases.
- Student marketer, technician, non- medical helper are the other on-campus jobs available for students. It is quite difficult to secure on- campus part time job.
- Jobs like restaurant staff, Health care assistant, warehouse worker are the other jobs available for students in the city. The hourly pay will be mainly the basic pay which is now £11.44 that is £228.8 in a week.
- 16 to 20 hours is the maximum hours of work allowed per week.
- In Leicester it is quite difficult for students to secure part-time employment while studying that was mainly because of the increased number of dependents who can work full time. Company's prefer full-time workers over part time students. Usually the students apply for Job online and the emoloyer calls for interview. We can also get jobs by referrals which is the most easiest way.

- Modern facilities- library, labs, lecture halls everything was perfect, student friendly
- Outstanding Career support- CV workshops, placement support were offered by DMU
- Diverse Community- I was able converse and learn about different community, knowing their perspectives- making DMU an inclusive and global learning environment.
Dislikes
- Administration- I faced a bit of delay with official processes(documentation, visa letter)
- Accommodation cost- housing around campus was a bit expensive.
- Outdated Portal- university system (blackboard) felt outdated, downtime was there, not user friendly.
Campus Life
- De Montfort has 2 main campuses: Leicester city campus and Scraptoft campus
- Facilities are Library: Kimberlin Library (24/7 access, study zones, digital resources); for sports: QEII Leisure Centre (gym, pool, sports hall); then they have Beaumont Park; and for Medical & Wellbeing: Mental health support, counselling, multifaith rooms, and welfare services are available.
- The activities that take place are the Cultural Exchanges Festival, Freshers Week Welcome Festival, Themed student nights & fairs by the Students union.
- We also have 150+ student clubs and societies, Competitive and recreational sports teams, Student media, Art shows, fashion events, and creative exhibitions.
Fees
- Full fees: £16,500
- Accommodation (ensuite): £480 pw
- fee structure depends on how we choose it; I chose yearly
- Monthly expense - accommodation: 1920
- Food—300-500 pounds
- Transportation – 100 pounds
- Regular expense: 100-200 pounds
- It depends on each individual; if we share a house with friends, rent will be much cheaper—monthly it can go down to 300-400 pounds; other expense can be mostly similar

Likes
- Campus: The campus is huge (compared to other universities in Leicester).
- Location: The campus is right next to the city center of Leicester, which makes it easy for students to access and explore while they're on lunch breaks/after classes.
- Variety of courses: They offer variety of courses, especially in Arts/Design field. Variety of courses are also available in masters courses in management.
Dislikes
- Quality of education/faculty: The lecturers are decent but not up to the mark.
- Assignments: The assignments are too subjective in nature. The evaluation of your assignments are done from a narrow perspective. The evaluators of your assignments will mostly be done by Phd students, so even if yours and your friend's answers are identical the mark won't be because the possibility is that the evaluators are different for both of you.
- Food/Refreshments on campus: The campus lacks good canteen. There's no variety of food available. The food on campus is also quite expensive and not so great in taste. Students prefer to go to the city center during their lunch hours. Although, they have subway, an Indian fast food restaurant and a small convenience store on campus.
Campus Life
-
DMU currently has 2 operational campuses and 1 yet-to-be operational campus, so 3 campuses in total. This list is below:
- De Montfort University, Leicester Campus: Leicester, England, UK. This is the main campus.
- De Montfort University, London Campus: London, England, UK. This is their recently opened campus.
- De Montfort University, Dubai Campus: Dubai Internet City, Dubai, UAE. This campus is not open yet but will open soon.
- All the major facilities are available on campus, including:
- Medical services
- Security staff
- Bike storage
- Car parking
- Gym
- Heated swimming pool
- Canteen
- Convenience store
- Fast food restaurants
- Lawn
- There are plenty of clubs to join for a student. The student can enrol themselves by visiting the student Union website through their dashboard and show interest in joining any club or society. You can even create your own club/society by having at least 6 members willing to join the club/society. For example: There's an India society that you can join as an Indian and take part in planning festive events for not just the community but for all DMU students to attend. Apart from this, DMU always celebrated not just western festivals but also festivals popularly celebrated on the east side of the world. For example, DMU will have Holi and Diwali celebrations. The tickets sell out quickly so my suggestion is to buy them as soon as they're released.
- Other activities you can take part in are some interesting workshops and short courses. They offer a variety of workshops and short-term courses either for free or for a very low fee. I personally took part in the startup workshop, which was free to participate in, and took a short-term Japanese course, which lasted for 12 weeks and cost only £25 for the entire course.
Fees
- Tuition fee: £17,000
- Breakdown of the fee payment:
- Paid £8,500 (50% of £17,000) after receiving an unconditional offer letter.
- Paid the rest of the £8,500 after the course start date in 3 equal installments. Each installment was 2 months apart from the other. For example: Paid £2,833 in February, April, and May.
- Monthly Expenses:
- Hostel/Student Accommodation: £10,000 per year (approx.): The student accommodation fee is NOT included in the overall fee for the course. This is a separate expense that was borne by me. The fee for the student accommodation that I paid was on the higher side. You can get an independent/shared room for much less.
- Groceries: I spent £500-£800 monthly on groceries (can even go till £1,000). This can vary according to a person's lifestyle preferences. My grocery expenses were on the higher side but normally it would be around £500 for most people.
- Mobile plans: I paid £12 per month for 60 GB internet, unlimited calls, and unlimited social media surfing (I bought a VOXI sim). Honestly, 60 GB of internet is a lot. You won't be needing that much data from your mobile carrier since everywhere you go you'll find free wifi. So you can buy a cheaper plan as well.
- Shopping/Eating out: Eating at restaurants/fast food chains will cost you between £15 and £50 per person depending on the restaurant. There are many cheap eat-out options available in or near Leicester city center.
- Suggestions on managing expenses:
- You can also save some money by using the Hoppin Bus service, which goes around Leicester City Centre free of charge during office hours on weekdays. Walking around the city is also easy, as Leicester is not a big city like Manchester, plus the weather conditions support walking around the city.
- Always ask for student discounts at stores (and carry your student ID with you at all times in order to avail any available offers). For instance: My salon, in Leicester city centre, offered 10% student discounts, but you had to show them your student id to avail the offer.

- Campus - Amazing, spacious and good infrastructure
- Course Structure - Block Teaching Structure
- Extracurricular Activities - Lots of opportunities to participate in different competitions and activities
Dislikes
- Less classes - Block teaching left the students with more holidays than classes throughout the academic year
- Overall teaching approach and not in-depth teaching - They had a more generalised way of teaching than a specialised way of teaching
- Limited Alumni engagement - Very few events to connect alumni with on-campus students

- Campuses – 1. DMU Main Campus - Leicester, United Kingdom,2. DMU, Dubai, United Arab Emirates,3. DMU, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
- Yes, all facilities are available like a library, sports facilities and even a hospital
- All festivals are celebrated on campus by different cultural committees throughout the year.
- I have been part of Indian society, but not many other sports/committees. So, I do not have much idea.
Fees
- As I was on an exchange programme and got a scholarship, I paid only 6000 pounds for my course. But in my knowledge, the full-time course costs around 17000 pounds. We had to pay the 6000 pounds in 2 instalments.
- There were no hostel fees as the student can live to rent out an accommodation/house separately.
- My Monthly expense: Rent - 500 pounds, Food - 200 pounds, Transportation - 0 as I used to live right next to the university, Other Expenses - 200-300 pounds

- Structure and approach of modules and seminars: the design of the course was such that it was an immersive experience of theory and practical.
Dislikes
- Cold weather: as an Indian it was tough for me to navigate and survive in the constant cold and rainy weather.
- Attendance: we had card which we had to tap to get attendance for every lecture and sometime that wouldn't work so it was bit tricky.
- Lack of physical copies of study material
Campus Life
- My university had one huge campus which had several academic buildings, a full fledged Townhall for students to take lunch.
- There was also costa and Starbucks on campus, there was a playground a basketball court a huge library which was open 24 *7 for students, the campus also had a local gp for any medical assistance.
- There were many events happening on campus on a regular basis. There were societies for extra curricular.
Fees
- The entire course cost me around 25 lakhs including the tuition fee, lodging, personal expenses, transportation and everything else. The payment was semester wise.
- Monthly expenses roughly rounded up to 1000- 1200 pounds, renting an apartment cost around 120 pounds per week. One could cover their living expenses by working part time in some local shops.

Overview
I chose this country since I did not require a Visa here. The reason I chose this University because it was the highest rated in the shortlist I had since I just had 2 years of work experience, I was limited to options. Overall it was a good experience since it was a very new experience, just had issues with getting a job.
Campus Life
I did not experience too much of the campus life as it was a master's degree. However, the facilities are really good and there are activities happening every now and then with the number of different clubs and societies.
Overview
This University ticked all the boxes that I had in mind for a great place to do career advancement for the next two years. One of the many things I like about this university is the enormous-beautiful-widespread campus, Its global rankings, the courses they offered, their UK rankings , employment opportunities after graduation, and finally a good life off campus as well.
Campus Life
Dmu's campus is widespread with beautiful and new buildings for different faculty. modern infrastructure that would attract everyone's attraction and extracurricular activities that would help in the overall development of a student. the campus provides all kinds of support from beautifully designed library to auditoriums , outdoor activities like swimming , gym, variety of social clubs to join, dramas, sports etc etc. The list goes on and one.
Overview
Course curriculum had specific topics that interested me. Was research based.
Campus Life
Campus was nice. Lot of events kept taking place. Participation was online due to the pandemic.
Overview
It's very modern and has great initiatives in place. The infrastructure is incredibly new and looks good. The library is extensive and has vast collections of books, archives, newspapers and DVDs. The City of Leicester is also very cultural and so DMU's central location thrusts you in a vibrant array of culture that you can fully immerse and indulge in from food to music and crafts.
Fees
Course fees are 9250 a year payable from loans by most students. The accommodation also incurs charges which for me works out as 90 per week and is paid in several lump sums, the most recent one having been 1350.
