Course Curriculum

8

  • My course was very difficult compared to others. It was a combination of Exams and assignments. Positive aspect is that I had fewer classes in a week, and the negative aspect is that I need to submit assignments without plagiarism.
  • My course had 2 semesters and 1 project to complete. I had only 2 days of classes in a week (Monday and Friday) between 9 AM to 5 PM. We had a total of 60 students in our class. Most of them were from India.

Admission Experience

  • I applied only for De Montfort University and was admitted and completed my Master's in time without any backlogs. I had many friends of mine studying in this university, which made it easy for me to get admission to this university without any hurdles. I had a smooth visa interview process, and I also got my college ID card on my 1st day of college. Overall, a wonderful experience abroad.
  • I chose this college as I had many of my friends already studying there. The admission process includes applying for university, providing SOP and LOR, taking up CAS interview, getting a Conditional offer letter, paying around £3000 to get an unconditional offer letter, and finally getting admitted to college. The eligibility criteria include students passing the GRE, IELTS or passing their English in 12th with a minimum 60 marks and also completing their Bachelor’s degree in English medium. Overall, a smooth admission process.
  • I applied for the January intake. I started my admission process in the month of October 2019. I got my conditional offer letter within a week of applying, then I had to arrange the funds to get the unconditional offer letter to proceed with the visa interview. This took some time ,and once I got my unconditional offer letter, I got an appointment for a visa interview and completed it on time. So the total time would take around 1-2 months to get the visa and travel to the UK.

Faculty

8

  • Faculty to student ratio is 1:60. It’s similar to Indian education, where each lecture takes care of the whole class. The teaching method is more of a projectors rather than explaining the syllabus.
  • None of the faculty or university staff helps students in finding part-time or full-time jobs. I admire my project tutor who helped me in all aspects, even during the COVID times.

Campus Life

10

  • Our university has many campuses, like:
    • DMU Leicester, which is the main campus.
    • DMU Milton Keynes, A smaller campus which focuses on business, social sciences and economics.
    • DMU Bedford
    • DMU Lincoln
  • I studied at DMU Leicester, and I had all the facilities in it. Major festivals celebrated in DMU are the Bollywood Freshers party and TeenTech DMU festival. DMU has Queen Elizabeth II Leisure Centre, which includes with swimming pool, climbing wall, sports hall, fitness suite, dancing studio, etc.

Part Time Jobs

  • There aren’t any Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, or Departmental Assistant positions available on a part-time basis for students. On-campus jobs available for students are a referral program, which is not considered a part-time job. The maximum hours per week are 20 hours during the semester and 40 hours during holidays. Since we don’t have any on-campus part-time jobs, we are forced to find work outside.
  • Most students work in warehouses, Food factories, and hotels on an hourly basis. Hourly pay varies from company to company. Usually we are paid between £7.5 to £11 per hour. It’s very easy to get part-time jobs in the UK, as we have many staffing companies that place us in different food factories or warehouses. To get a part-time job, we need to take a work permit letter from the university and a bank letter from the bank, and submit them to staffing agencies to get the job.

Placement

4

  • Since we studied during COVID we were not provided with campus placement. Off campus placements are very tough in UK. Starting salary for a fresh graduate starts from £25000 a year up to £60000 on full time.
  • Major companies that hire from our program are Rolls Royce, Unilever, AstraZeneca, Barclays, shell, B&Q Ltd, Pearson PLC, Vodafone, BP, Diageo etc.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I was in an off-campus accommodation. I found my accommodation through the Gumtree application. I was in a shared apartment which cost us £1200 including bills, and was shared by 4, so each one of us was paying £300 per month. I didn’t have any difficulties in finding the accommodation. I would recommend future students to look for shared accommodation.
  • My apartment was around 1 mile from the campus, and I used to walk through Bede Park to reach the campus.

Exams

  • The eligibility criteria include students passing the GRE, IELTS with 6 to 6.5 scores or passing their English in 12th with a minimum of 60 marks and also completing their Bachelor’s degree in English medium. Documents required are CV, SOP and 2 LORs. I had a CAS interview before they offered me a conditional offer letter. This interview was conducted by the Admission team of De Montfort University.
  • It was a Zoom call for 30 minutes, asking questions like – Why did you choose De Montfort University? What is the course you are looking to study?. Etc. This is to check our English proficiency.

Fees

  • The full fee for my course was £16000, with £1500 discounted as a scholarship, so my total fee was £14500. I paid £3000 to get my unconditional offer letter and then paid £7000 as a first instalment. I was asked to pay the remaining during my 2nd semester, and I paid the remaining £4500. I didn’t take university accommodation, so it is not included in my fee. My monthly expenses were somewhere around £500-£600, including rent (£250), Bills (£50), Transportation (£50), Food (£50-100), and Shopping (£50-100).

Scholarship

  • I received £1500 as a scholarship. This is a referral scholarship program. I got this as I was referred by my friend, who was studying. This is a program specifically made for students to get their friends and families to join the university.
  • This program awards student who refers a friend with receive £1500 reward and a £1500 discount in fees for new students, which is termed a scholarship.
