Likes
- Supportive peer group: The course was such that we had to work on assignment in teams and the teams had people from across the world. It gave one an opportunity to interact with different nationalities and learn from them
- University Campus: Huge university campus, very aesthetic and pleasing.
- Structure and approach of modules and seminars: the design of the course was such that it was an immersive experience of theory and practical.
Dislikes
- Cold weather: as an Indian it was tough for me to navigate and survive in the constant cold and rainy weather.
- Attendance: we had card which we had to tap to get attendance for every lecture and sometime that wouldn't work so it was bit tricky.
- Lack of physical copies of study material
Course Curriculum
- The entire course was an amalgamation of theory as well as practical. There were different teaching techniques used which provided students with a very dynamic and practical learning environment.
- Usage of case studies and case study assignment to explain theoretical concepts was provided insights into the real dynamic and moving business world and how one could apply theoretical concepts in real business scenarios to improve the business.
- There were seminars in which the teacher did a one on one with every student to learn about their approach and guide them according and I think that was very useful and insightful.
- The batch consisted of students from across the world with people of different ethnicities gathered to learn and work together in team projects and presentations. A large part of the batch consisted of students from the Middle East and south east Asia so there were a lot of Turkish, Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Afghani students. There were also a lot of students from China and Korea as well. The faculty to student ratio was 1:10 , the classes and seminars were designed in such a way that each student was paid attention to and given the right amount of support.
Admission Experience
- I just applied to DMU and I got in. This was an integrated programme offered by Daly college- a very prestigious school in India. They launched college programmes in collaboration with De Montfort University Leicester. and I got in through that programme to pursue bachelors in arts in business studies. It was a great immersive experience for me to get to learn in a very dynamic and moving environment, getting hands on experience of the real corporate and business world though very practical case studies and course design.
- I chose DMU and this particular course because it best suited with my long term goals and plans. As someone coming from a business family, business always intrigued me and I wanted to formally pursue business as a subject and DMU was providing just that. This course was a amalgamation of theoretical concepts which one could use in their business or in the corporate world.
- I applied for September intake. The admission process took me about 2-3 months of time. I first had to appear for the exam and apply for the course after which my application was revised and I received a pass letter using which I further went through the visa process, visa process took me about 30 days. I had to prepare a list of all the documents for the visa approval.
Campus Life
- My university had one huge campus which had several academic buildings, a full fledged Townhall for students to take lunch.
- There was also costa and Starbucks on campus, there was a playground a basketball court a huge library which was open 24 *7 for students, the campus also had a local gp for any medical assistance.
- There were many events happening on campus on a regular basis. There were societies for extra curricular.
Part Time Jobs
- There are limited on campus jobs available, there are many small shops which hire students part time so students can also look for jobs off the campus.
- The pay ranges from 10 pounds per hour. Students are allowed to only work 20 hours per week.
- Since there are many students in the university pursuing many different courses, it is a little difficult to secure campus part time jobs.
- There is no precise answer for the level of difficulty here because it depends from person to person, someone might find a job very easily while it may be tough for others. Students can ask around in local shops and drop their cv's in person. Students can also go to the career portal of companies in the area to see if they're rehiring and for what roles.
Placement
- Most universities abroad do not have the concept of placements. Universities abroad organise career fairs in which various companies in and around the town and also across the country come to set up their stalls and educate students about career options in their company and their policies for the same so usually students are expected to attend the career fairs and collect brochures of the companies of their liking and interests.
- The average salary in the UK ranges from 50-60 thousand pounds a year for freshers.
Accommodation
- I opted for off campus accommodation but there were options of on campus accommodations as well. The off campus two bedroom apartment costed us 120 pounds per person per week. There was deposit of around 800 pounds with the owner which we got full refund when we vacated the apartment.
- The apartment had two bedrooms fully furnished with a study table cupboards, beds and chairs. The kitchen area has a dining table, a sofa, a refrigerator and a washing machine. All grocery stores were very nearby and this place was only 400 meters away from the college campus so it was very easy to walk to the classrooms.
Exams
- They required me to appear for TOEFL and get a score in the band of 24-30 in order to be eligible and qualify for the application and course.
- Documents Required: Statement of purpose, Letter of recommendations and curriculum vitae are all required while applying for the course along with your woeful scores.
- I appeared for a linguistics interview with the university and I also appeared for the interview during my visa process.
Fees
- The entire course cost me around 25 lakhs including the tuition fee, lodging, personal expenses, transportation and everything else. The payment was semester wise.
- Monthly expenses roughly rounded up to 1000- 1200 pounds, renting an apartment cost around 120 pounds per week. One could cover their living expenses by working part time in some local shops.
Scholarship
- I am not aware of any scholarship for this particular course but one can do their own research maybe the university has now introduced some sort of scholarship for this particular course now. While I was there I was not aware of any such thing but one can do their own research about this and get to know more through their brochure and university website.
