Course Curriculum Overview
I would evaluate the Civil Engineering program at RIT as very relevant and quite comprehensive. The excellent combination of basic engineering subjects, off-campus activities, and well-planned labs, which seemed to correspond with actual industry needs, was among the main reasons I took this course. The curriculum includes, among others, structural analysis, geotechnical, transportation, and design software, thus giving us the students good preparation for both real world applications and higher studies. The constant three internals per semester, then a final exam, help to keep the rhythm going but the schedule some days definitely feels tight. The tests are of an average difficulty and mostly check for understanding of the concepts rather than memory.Nevertheless, there are still some areas for improvement more company visits, updating software courses, and more hands-on activities would make the curriculum even better. Teaching approaches might also try to incorporate more real-world examples and lab work to make the subject clearer. In general, the curriculum is very good but could benefit from being more practice-oriented.
Placement Experience
RIT's placement scenario is very good, even for the most unpopular branches such as Civil Engineering. Starting from the 7th semester, students are allowed to participate in campus recruitment, and companies come to the campus for the entire final year. The major recruiting companies are L&T Construction, Shapoorji Pallonji, Brigade Group, Sobha Developers, Atkins, PWD, and Infosys for the non-core sector. Civil students on an average get ?5–6 LPA as salary, and the highest offer is usually in the range of ?12–15 LPA, depending on the company and the position. Almost 70–80% of Civil students are placed, while some of them go for higher studies or government examination.Site engineer, design engineer, planning engineer, survey engineer, and trainee engineer are the core positions that are offered. Also, non-traditional roles in IT and consulting can be taken up by those who are not interested in core engineering profiles.I will first acquire some work experience in the industry after completing my degree and then will pursue a master's degree in structural engineering to gain further specialization.
Fees and Financial Aid
I am studying Civil Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology and the yearly fee structure is quite clear. I paid about 235000 per year under the management quota. This includes tuition fees development charges, lab fees, exam fees, and one time caution deposit of 5000. Registration and University fees total about 10000 each year. The fees increase slightly every year by 5 to 7 %. My classmates under comedk pay around 2 lakh while kcet students pay much lower fee of about 70000 to 80000 per year. The institute offers scholarships like Merit-cum-Means the ramaiaah foundation scholarship, and governement programs. Students can receive 10000 to 35000 based on the merit and financial situation.
Campus Life
The overall impression of my campus life at RIT is a colorful and well-balanced one. The university is the place of the most important events like Utsav (April–May cultural fest) and Aavishkaar (February technical fest), which involve a large number of participants and contribute to the already lively atmosphere. The library is the area in campus that I really enjoy—it is well stocked with textbooks, reference books, and international journals, as well as NPTEL resources and digital databases that are user-friendly.The technology in the classrooms consists of smart boards, projectors, high-speed internet, and audio systems. Also, the various sports activities and events include all the main ones plus a gym that is well equipped.Besides the above-mentioned activities, RIT offers various student-run clubs, such as IEEE, Rotaract, NSS, SAE, Cultural Club, Entrepreneurship Cell, and department clubs, which continuously host workshops, competitions, and social events. Without doubt, these clubs enliven the campus, help in self-development and create excellent networking opportunities that go beyond academics.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel at RIT is good and quite comfy for most students. Rooms are shared by 2–3 people and come with a cot, table, rack, and good airflow. The washrooms are cleaned often, and each floor has Wi-Fi. There are TV rooms, study spots, and indoor games for all. The mess food is okay and clean, with a mix of South Indian meals, chapati, rice, dal, and some special dishes on weekends. The hostel join process is simple. Students fill an online form, give their papers, and pay the admit and caution fee. It is safer and cheaper when compared to most PGs in the area. Many students stay in MSR Nagar, New BEL Road, or Dollars Colony. These areas are safe, close to food outlets, and easy to travel from, making them good for day-to-day life.
Admission
I applied to several engineering colleges including BMSCE, RV College of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar, and PES University. I received confirmed admissions from Dayananda Sagar and PES (through management). I chose Ramaiah Institute of Technology mainly because of its strong reputation, better campus environment, and consistently high placement record. RIT also felt more balanced in terms of academics, exposure, and overall student culture.I did get rejected from RVCE because my COMEDK rank wasn’t high enough for Civil Engineering in the first round. I wasn’t able to convert it even in the later rounds due to higher cutoffs. The admission process at RIT is straightforward. Admissions are based on KCET, COMEDK, and Management quota. KCET cutoffs for Civil are typically around 20,000 to 30,000, while COMEDK ranks are usually 25,000 to 35,000. Eligibility requires 10+2 with PCM. Most students prefer KCET as it’s the most affordable route. My overall admission experience was smooth, with quick document verification and clear communication from the college.
Faculty
The RIT Civil Engineering department features roughly the same number of faculty members as students, which leads to accessible and uncomplicated interactions. Most of the teachers are willing to help, particularly during lab sessions and project discussions. I personally appreciated Dr. Shashidhar for his lucid explanations and Prof. Priya for her encouraging guidance. There were a few professors, who were not very effective because their teaching was too fast-paced. Over the course of each semester, there are three internal tests, an assignment component, and one final university exam. The exams are of average difficulty and a few students who struggle mostly in maths-heavy subjects are unable to pass. The grading system is reasonable, and there are options for retakes. Generally, the curriculum is modern, hands-on, and connected with the industry, hence helping us to acquire strong theoretical and practical skills.
Night Life
Basically, the nightlife around RIT is calm and pleasant for students. The gym, library, and major cafeterias located at the campus will only be available till 8–8:30 PM, and the major public places will be locked up by 9 PM at the latest. The hostel time for boys is usually around 9:30 – 10 PM and for girls slightly earlier. The campus, meanwhile, is quieter but still has a lot of options around for hanging out.Locations like Veeresh Cafe, Roti Ghar, Just Punjabi, Brahmin’s Tiffin, and the small tea shops near the signal are among the students' favorite choices for relaxing. In addition, Orion Mall and MSR Nagar coffee shops are also recommended for late-night visits. The very same students who just finished classes often walk, make a stop for street food, or sit at nearby juice stalls as their activities. The area around MSRIT Road and New BEL Road is typically safe and well-lit, with a fair amount of people around until late at night, which makes it easier for students to walk aroun
