What Students Say
Likes
- There is minimum attendance compulsion in the coursework. Students only need to be present in labs, sessional classes. Marks for attendance is negligible for other regular classes. Nearly 1:1 ratio of boys and girls in our department.
- In most engineering departments there are more boys than girls. Helpful professors.Good professors and practical curriculum though some years behind the current industry. Good environment, libraries are good.
- Wonderful people, big playground, open green spaces, ample greenery, affordable canteen food, vehicle available or PWbD students, carrom and table tennis in union room.
Dislikes
- Labs are not always well equipped with supplies, some classrooms are really hot in summer, no non-smoking areas in open places
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is mostly relevant to the industry standards, sometimes curriculum is behind the industry in some departments. The curriculum mostly covers basic prerequisite knowledge needed for the industry. Two class tests and a semester exam for each theoretical subject and viva for sessional subjects.
Placement Experience
From 7th semester, students become eligible for full time placements. In my course, companies like ABinBev, Amul, Adani Wilmar (Fortune), Winkies have given offers for placement of students. Average no. of offers made by a company is 1. Other departments have mass recruiters with average no. of offers like 3-6. In last placement season near about 80% students were placed. Highest package of 15 Lpa, average package of 7-9 Lpa.
Fees and Financial Aid
Total tuition fees is somewhat around ?10200 for four years course. Fees for 1st and 2nd year collected during admission through WBJEE counselling. Fees for 3rd year and 4th year are to be paid separately, each being within ?4000. There is no separate lab fees or other compulsory charges. Fees for availing hostel is separate. Freeship available to ews and certain reserved quota candidates.
Campus Life
Technical festival is Srijan. Three annual festivals, one each for faculties of engineering, science and arts known as Sanskriti. Sanskriti by Arts is organised first followed by Science and lastly Engineering Faculties. Good range of books and journals in libraries. There are some smart classrooms with projectors. Student run clubs include clubs of chess, photography, Science club, Astronomy club, Rock climbing, finance club, coding clubs etc. Overall enriching experience for students.
Admission
I had applied to Serampore College, Scottish Church College for Bsc. Chemistry hons.for got seat in Jadavpur University for Food Technology and Biochemical Engineering in 1st round of WBJEE counselling. Jadavpur University is a premier institute for engineering courses, hence I chose this college. WBJEE and JEE mains ranks are accepted for admission in engineering departments of Jadavpur University.
Faculty
Faculty to student ratio is low. In most departments there is one teacher for every 30-35 students. Most of the faculty are approachable and helpful. Apart from semester exams, there are two class tests for each subject. Semester exams are not too difficult, but class tests can be tough sometimes. Somoe students fail to clear exams but that varies from both the students and concerned teachers.
Night Life
Popular hangout spots inside the campus are Hati baranda, Milandar canteen, World view, Staff canteen, Green zone, playground, Jheelpar, PG canteen. Outside the campus popular spots are Borda r chai r dokaan, momo stalls near 8B bus stand, M.M restaurant, South City mall. Departmental libraries open after 11 am and close at 5 pm. Central library is open till 8 pm. Campus is generally safe to roam around at night but best to steer clear of small gatherings near hostels, Jheelpar and Green zone. There has been no major incident of anything bad happening at night in the main campus.
