What Students Say
Likes
- I like the ambience of my college which makes me feel the history and the beauty of the classical things including the statues, pictures, rooms etc.
- I love the college atmosphere too where there are no signs of ragging and student politics.
- The professors and our faculty are quite nice and they provide us with many solutions, guidance and motivation too.
Dislikes
- The girls to boy ratio is way too odd where the number of girls are 35 + and the boys are 15 +
- The washrooms are not tidy and hygienic. Even for the water filters.
- Canteen are not quite good, although it does and fulfills the work and it's cheap. The quality isn't that great.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose English Honours as i was deeply moved by the new concepts of English Literature and it's history and for that i wanted to pursue it more. In the real world, the literature gives us a glimpse of how feelings can be written in poetic words and in such a beautiful way even if it is anger, happiness, envy, etc. Although some enhancements can be done in the course such as adding more of a provident poem and focusing on only a small part of english literature instead of adding 4-6 ages in the syllabus.
Placement Experience
From the final semester, the students get placements offer. Till now, companies like Amazon, Tata, IBM etc have visited and made offers to plenty of students and offered jobs too. Percentage of students are roughly 60% based on placements. For me, after having an English Hons degree, i would sit for the cat exam and pursue MBA. Later when I am independent and have a stable job and life, i wish to sit for UPSC and do civil services.
Fees and Financial Aid
During admission, I had to pay 14.6k for English Honours. Although my friend who enrolled in Bcom Hons had to pay 41k. Our college also has seat availability based on the quota and the fees relatably changes based on that too. As it is under the University of Calcutta, for the registration we (General Category) had to pay around 210 and the other ones (SC, ST, CNI, etc) had to pay 150. Additionally our college provides language course and other certified courses which are charged extra. Scholarship program are available and student can also avail the student credit card facility of the state govt.
Campus Life
We used to have a huge event in our college known as the caledonian fest but unfortunately after covid we did not have it. Apart from that there are many books available in our library including many old and antique books. We also have an online system so we can check the availability of the book based on that. Sports are offered in a huge way and students can enroll in different categories. We do not have any political student group but other than that we do have students activity club where we get our skills enhanced.
Admission
I chose this college because it had its own reputation which made it stand different from the other colleges. Unlike other colleges in Kolkata such as Presidency, Jadavpur, Ashutosh, etc they have a complete different environment which is full of student politics, violence etc. The admission process of our college is completely online and it is done based on our boards percentage. Cutoffs are generally 75-85% for the General Category and around 50% for the other ones. Unlike the other colleges, our college has an extra quota for Christian Students too.
Faculty
The english faculty to student ratio is quite fair, we have around 53 students along with 5 professors. Other than that the history faculty, maths, economics etc are good too. The bcom department have morning classes and it is divided into two sections. As per the UGC guidelines, we have a 4 years graduation system and for our first semester we have, Major, Minor, SEC, IDC, AEC, CVAC, ENVS. The exams are conducted by the Calcutta University. They don't really have a good progress based on the history of exam and result data and due to the huge syllabus and exams are relatively hard.
Night Life
Hostel are provided by our college and they have strict timings. The girls have two different hostels and the same for the boys. The college is closed around 5.30pm everyday but outside college there is food truck and other cood outlets where we can hang around and have a good time. Sometimes if we want then we can often take a walk to the ghats or to college street and go through the old calcutta ambience.
Other Applied Colleges
Ramakrishna Mission Residential College - [RKMRC] | Bachelor of Arts [BA] (English)
I was not fit for a residential college under so much limitations.
Adamas University | Bachelor of Arts [BA] {Hons.} (English)
Being a private college, fees was too high.
