Scottish Church BA (Hons.) English FAQs

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing BA (Hons.) English from Scottish Church College?

Ans. BA (Hons.) English from Scottish Church College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, opens up diverse career paths. Graduates can pursue teaching at the school level (after B.Ed.) or college/university level (after MA and UGC-NET/SET). English is also a popular optional subject in UPSC and West Bengal PSC examinations. Other career avenues include journalism, content writing, copywriting, publishing, public relations, media, and corporate communications. Many students proceed to MA in English at prestigious universities, followed by research (MPhil/PhD). The strong foundation in literary analysis and critical thinking also makes graduates well-suited for roles in management, law, and civil services.

Ques. How competitive is admission to BA (Hons.) English at Scottish Church College, and what marks are typically needed?

Ans. BA (Hons.) English at Scottish Church College is among the most competitive programmes at the college. With 55 total seats (26 General Merit, 10 CNI Christian, 6 Other Christian, 9 SC, 2 ST, 2 PWD), and the index calculated as 20% of aggregate + 80% of English marks, students with very high English scores (90%+) have a significant advantage. Based on past admission trends, students with 85%+ in English and 80%+ aggregate tend to secure seats in the early call lists. The minimum eligibility is 60% aggregate and 70% in English, but actual admission typically requires much higher scores due to competition. Students are advised to apply early and monitor the college website daily during the admission period.

Ques. Is the BA (Hons.) English programme at Scottish Church College taught in English medium, and what is the teaching style?

Ans. Yes, the BA (Hons.) English programme is entirely taught in English medium. The teaching style at Scottish Church College follows the University of Calcutta's CCF curriculum, combining lectures, seminars, tutorials, and internal assessments. Students study a wide range of texts from British, American, and Indian literature, along with literary theory, criticism, and linguistics. The department is known for its academically rigorous approach and encourages students to develop critical thinking, analytical writing, and oral communication skills. Students also benefit from the college's well-stocked library and access to digital resources.

Ques. What minor subject combinations are available with English (Hons.) at Scottish Church College, and which is recommended?

Ans. Students opting for English as the major (Honours) subject can choose from the following Generic Elective (minor) subjects: History, Philosophy, Sociology, Physical Education, Economics, Psychology, Hindi, and Political Science. The fee at the time of admission is Rs. 17,051 for most combinations. However, if Physical Education or Psychology is chosen as the minor, the fee increases to Rs. 20,521. For students interested in civil services, History or Political Science as a minor is recommended. For those interested in research and academia, Philosophy is a strong complement. Economics is a good choice for students considering interdisciplinary or corporate careers. Hindi as a minor is useful for students aiming for central government roles or All India Services.

Ques. Can students from Science or Commerce streams apply for BA (Hons.) English at Scottish Church College?

Ans. Yes, students from Science and Commerce streams can apply for BA (Hons.) English at Scottish Church College, provided they meet the eligibility criteria: 60% aggregate in Class 12 and 70% marks in English. The index mark is calculated as 20% of aggregate + 80% of English marks, so the stream does not matter as much as the English score. Many students from Science and Commerce backgrounds successfully gain admission to English Honours programmes. However, since the index is heavily weighted towards English marks (80%), students must have scored very well in English in their Class 12 board examination to be competitive.

Ques. What is the difference between BA (Hons.) English at Scottish Church College and other Kolkata colleges, and why should I choose Scottish Church College?

Ans. Scottish Church College is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges in Kolkata, established in 1830, and is NAAC Grade 'A' accredited (3rd Cycle) with a NIRF ranking of 101-150 (2025) in the College category. The English Department has a strong academic tradition, experienced faculty, and a curriculum that is regularly updated. The college's heritage, diverse student community, and active cultural life (including theatre, literary events, and Rabindra Jayanti celebrations) make it a vibrant place to study English literature. The college also has notable alumni including Manna Dey, Mrinal Sen, and Mithun Chakraborty, reflecting its rich legacy. Additionally, the college's independent admission process (not through the centralised WB portal) means a more streamlined and transparent merit-based selection.

Fees and Financial Aid:

So I completed my Class 12th Boards in 2024 and after that I applied for various colleges, Scottish Church College was one of them. It is one of the oldest colleges not only in West Bengal but also India. Many eminent personalities have studied here. 1st Semester Fees (including admission fees) is Rs 14691. The college is situated in North Kolkata (near Hedua Park). The campus is not very big but it still okay. You can't enter without id cards. It's a pretty strict College. Till now I haven't faced any ragging. Some seniors are really nice (not every senior though). On the day of orientation we were told about various Scholarships, Students Credit Card Scheme etc. Those who need that, can definitely apply. There are many Activity Clubs which you might join if you are interested in co-curriculum activities like Drama Club, Literary Club, Photography Club, Eastern Music Club, Western Music Club, Eastern Dance Club, Western Dance Club, Painting Club etc. There's a NSS Unit too. For Christian Students Special scripture classes are held. But unfortunately no fests have taken place here after 2019. I don't know whether I will get to witness any Fest during my college life. Nevertheless I have got the opportunity to participate in Inter college competitions (in fests of other colleges) through auditions held by the clubs. I can assure one thing that most clubs give newcomers the opportunity if they are capable of representing the College. Honestly speaking my social life in this college is quite good presently. Hope my college life keeps going like this for the remaining 3.5 years.

During admission, I had to pay 14.6k for English Honours. Although my friend who enrolled in Bcom Hons had to pay 41k. Our college also has seat availability based on the quota and the fees relatably changes based on that too. As it is under the University of Calcutta, for the registration we (General Category) had to pay around 210 and the other ones (SC, ST, CNI, etc) had to pay 150. Additionally our college provides language course and other certified courses which are charged extra. Scholarship program are available and student can also avail the student credit card facility of the state govt.

Fees and Financial Aid:

The tuition fees doesn't increase all of a sudden. It depends on what year you are studying right now. At the time of admission they would take approx 14k along the semester 1 fees and then only the semester fees are taken from the students which is around 4 to 5k per semester. So, the overall cost of the 3 yr education concludes at around 30 to 40k . The college provides scholarship and financial aids from their side and it's really good.
