Remarks
Good : 1) ROI(Return of investment), 2) Exposure, 3) UG research, 4) Small Batch size(10-15), 5) World class faculties, 6) Labs, Classrooms, Library are fully air conditioned and equipped with recent tech. 7) Centre of excellence, TEQIP Fund phase-3 by World Bank 8) Top-5 Univ. of India, Top 70 in Asia and top 500 in world(according to shanghai rankings) and top 800 in world (according to QS) Bad : 1) The 4year B.Tech course just started in 2015. So it has yet to create its mark. 2) The campus is kind of 'small' 3) Yes, some politics is present in the Rajabazar campus but its a minor issue. 4) I really can't find anything more.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course I am in is mainly research oriented and CU is known for its quality research. CU is one of very few institutes in India that promotes UG research. The course is well up to date and the last revision of the syllabus was on 2018. They'll also provide ample scope for doing internships. Our course structure have credits too for this, ex- doing internships in IIA(Indian Institute of Astrophysics). The course also includes electives to let the student choose which subjects to take and which not. Now getting high cgpa in CU will be very difficult but if u attend all classes and stay fully focused u'll get something in the range 7-8cgpa. Failing here is common.
Placement Experience
Well, on-campus placements are not provided unlike all other colleges in India. And they don't need it frankly coz the reputation and alumni strength is enough to get a handsome package later. Still, for instance, the median package would lie somewhere around 6lpa and the highest was offered by Uber of 12lpa. Also, do note CU thinks they are like MIT, SU, CMU and they don't need to hire TPOs just like these institutes but its a concern in India.
College Events
Well, events occur at regular intervals like conducting seminars of renowned academicians, laureates and motivational speakers. Fests aren't that grandeur or popular but clubs are good. CU coding and robotics clubs are awesome in which anyone can join. A few of our best coders are from Jute and Fibre branch.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is dead cheap. Cheapest I would say in whole India as complete 4year BTech will cost around 30k. So ROI(Return of investment) is very very good.
Campus Life
Campus life will be magical wether u belong to the nano campus or raja bazar or ballyganj it doesn't matter. CU coding club is very popular and active along with the robotics club.
Alumni/Alumna
The seniors are very friendly. The alumni network is also strong (being a 150+ old institute).
Admission
I gave WBJEE 2019 and secured 3.3k rank with 74 marks. Exam paper was hard that year and my target was at least 100marks or under 1k rank but due to silly mistakes, I failed. A small note of caution for future aspirants: plz don't take wbjee lightly as I did.
Faculty
The faculties are just awesome. I bet u'll find a better quality of faculties than most NITs, IITs and JU even.. just for instance in my dept. 1 faculty is an ex-isro scientist who has contributions to major isro projects(like in chandrayaan), all of them were gold medalists throughout in their academics having PhDs from the University of Luxembourg, London, Edinburgh, and IIT Kgp. They also have multiple patents and 100s of publications in reputed journals. In-dept. like IT u'll even find fellows from Princeton and other ivey leagues. So yeah faculty quality is world class and one of the reasons for such good national/international rankings.
