Course Curriculum Overview

5

1. The syllabus of Presidency University is comparable with ISI, CMI's. It has almost everything that a student need to flourish him/herself towards higher Mathematics, 2. Not just the curriculum, Presidency University has a good set of experienced faculty members to successfully execute the syllabus. 3. Although UGC has implemented almost same syllabus throughout country, with the help of excellent faculty memebers and initiative of the HOD, Presidency University always stand far ahead than other college, Universities in the state. At the end of the course, the students of Presidency University are supposed to be more prepared than any other college students. 4. Presidency University teaches basic to advance level algebra and analysis in the first year itself. 5. More importantly, Presidency University offers a lot of various elective papers that are usually not offered in any other colleges at undergraduate level such as Functional Analysis, Differential Geometry, Theory of ODE and dynamical systems etc. 6. In each semester, there are two exams, one at the mid and one at the end of semester. Also depending upon the teacher, there are internal assesment methods such as class tests, presenations etc. 7. The teachers interacts with the students very frequently inside and outside the class hours.

Internships Opportunities

3

Since Presidency University does not run any engineering course, it has rarely any intership opportunities. The curriculum will definitly prepare you for corporate world, but student needs to look for such opportunities on their own merit and beyond the university. Although often some company pays interest to the talented students, but it is not very frequent. I can mention few names for the Mathematics students here: MTTS programme, Madhava Nurture Camp, VSRP by TIFR, SRFP etc. But students need look for the opportunities themselves.

Fees and Financial Aid

All amounts are in INR. One time fees: 1. Admission test form: 50 2. Counselling fees: 500 3. Admission and Registration fees: 300 4. Student union fee: 500 5. Sports fee: 230 6. Student aid fund: 200 7. Identity card: 70 8. Library fee: 1000 9. Laboratory fee: 1000 (not applicable for B.A. courses, Mathematics and Economics) Per semester fees: 1. Tuition fee: 900 2. Examination fee: 250 Scholarship (Merit cum means, only for BPL/ANTODAYA/PHH card holders): 1500 per month for hostelers and 1000 for day scholars

Campus Life

3

Although I did not participate in extra curricular activies in the University except the programmes organised by our department. The depratment organises outreach programme for both college and school students, and we prepare quiz questions and special lectures for that. The department organises weekly colloqium and seminars delivered by experts from reputed institutes. We are very much benifited by those talks. Apart from that there are annual sports event organised by the University students where teams from other colleges participate. The department organises Cricket and Football league in the month of February and March. The female students are highly encouraged to participate in those activities as well. There are several cultural programmes organised by the student union throughout the year.

Admission

I got selected in different colleges and universities in West Bengal. I most important reason to choose this university is this university is the one of few autonomous university in West Bengal. The faculty members here are much more reputed than other colleges. I did not take admission in Jadavpur University because it was far away from my home and I am not at all comfortable in hostels that time. Another reason is the infrastructure provided by the 200 years institution Presidency University. The department was very recently built, centralised AC and unlimited network speed and a computer lab. Also, it follows semester system whereas other colleges are still stick with the traditional yearly examination method.

Faculty

4

There are currently 13 faculty members in the Department of Mathematics: 1. Avishel Adhikar (HOD), 2. Angshuman Das, 3. Arnab Mondal, 4. Balaji Roy, 5. Kuntal Banerjee, 6. Md. Nassim Akhtar, 7. Pampa Paul, 8. Ritu Sen, 9. Shubhabrata Da, 10. Subhas Khajanchi, 11. Subhra Bhattacharya, 12. Supriya Pan, 13. Tapan Saha. Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:10. The department offers a theree-year B.Sc., a two year M.Sc., P.hD., amd a General Elective Mathematics course for non-Mathematics majors. Following Universities establishment, the undergraduate syllabus was overhauled in 2015-16 and transitioned to the CBCS in 2018-19. The postgraduate curriculam is revised in 2017-18, with further updates planned. The Ph.D. programme commenced in 2018-19. The curriculam integrates e-learning development, tutorials, competitive exam preparation (such as JAM, GATE NET, ISI, CMI, TIFR, NBHM), job awareness, and career counselling initiatives. The faculty members possess immense experience of working in top research institutes in the country and abroad, consequentlly they actively pursue research across diverse fields, regularly publishing in prominent journals. The current reseach topic includes Algebra and Cryptography, Functional Analysis, Game theory and Operation research, Dynamical Systems, Representation Theory of Lie groups, Geometry and Topology, General Relativity and Cosmology. The faculty members are very professional towards the courses. Apart from that they motivate students towards higher studies in Mathematics by conductings special lectures, seminars, tutorials and mock tests. As a result, a lot of graduates from Presidency University are now shinhing in top institutes in India and abroad as well. They conduct exams in such a way that everyone instead of their merit can achieve decent marks, also there is enough scope for the talented students to prove their abilities as well. There are no faculty members in the department who are not liked by students. .

Night Life

4

Apart from two canteens, there are two theree shops inside the campus where you can get various refreshments like tea, coffee, snacks, cold drinks. In the canteen, you can get breakfast, lunch, dinner in very afforable price. There is a girls common room, badminton court, union room and basketball court. There is a huge playground inside the campus where you can play any outdoor sports like football, cricket etc. Library is the most peaceful place of the campus where you can spend hours after hours without any disturbance. Hostel is the main drawback of Presidency University. There is a girls hostel at Saltlake which is at two hourse distance from the campus, although there are shuttle services by the University. The boys hostel is nearby and not in a good condition. Students regularly protest for the hostel needs like hygine, bathroom, water etc. The locality of the University is famous for book market, and it is one of largest book market in Asia. It is vibrant and secure.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum in this college is uoto date, very relevant and with at par with the real world scenario, we learn about disorders, different schools of psychology and a lot more. There is a perfect balance of practical and theory, which is needed in psychology. In terms of improvement, there is always room for it, as of now there arent any suggestions from my side. The frequency of exams are fine, they give us time to prepare however I feel like as, according to the NEP, the semesters should be 6 months long but here they are cutting it short.
