Presidency University Kolkata: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 6 Reviews

The admission process at the university requires an entrance exam and placement on a merit list, with higher cut-off marks for science departments compared to humanities. Eligible students must attend a counseling session and submit documents to finalize admission. The Department of Mathematics comprises 13 highly qualified faculty members, maintaining a teacher-student ratio of 1:10, and offers B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., and elective courses. The curriculum incorporates e-learning and career guidance, with faculty experienced in research and actively publishing in fields such as Algebra and Cosmology.

Despite being a state-run university with affordable fees, the college's placement opportunities are limited, with many students pursuing further studies. The placement cell's effectiveness has declined, and formal internships are not provided, although unpaid lab research is available. Programs like MTTS and TIFR's VSRP are accessible to Mathematics students. Scholarships are not offered by the college itself, but students can apply for government scholarships like Inspire. Tuition fees are minimal, starting at 4000 INR in the first year and decreasing in subsequent semesters, with no fees for the fourth semester due to pandemic hardships.

Additional fees include a 50 INR admission test form fee and a 500 INR counseling fee. Eligible students can receive Merit cum Means scholarships, providing financial aid of 1500 INR per month for hostelers and 1000 INR for day scholars, ensuring financial circumstances do not restrict access to education.

Fees and Financial Aid:

Costs of study are very nominal in our university any student from a middle-class family can easily bear it. In my time during the counseling process, my university took 4000 rupees as tuition fees for the first year and the semester fees for the first year were only 500 rupees. In the third-semester tuition fees were 900 rupees and the semester fee was only 250 rupees. In the fourth semester, our university didn't take any tuition fees or semester fees thinking that the financial condition is not well in our state due to the continuous lockdown situation because of the unprecedented pandemic. Various state, as well as central government scholarship opportunities, are there for students like inspire DST.

The college doesn't offer any scholarships per se. Fees being bare minimum, there is no option for loans too. But regarding scholarships, you however become eligible for several government scholarships like Inspire and JBNSTS which pays handsomely besed on your performance in Class 12 boards and college semesters.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Mostly theoretical, I guess more practical/problematic questions need to be included. Part 1 was still fine but Part 2 was mostly on theory - also during the Part 2, special emphasis should be given for competitive exams. May be changing the course structure will help or at least realigning of subjects will also do.
