Course Curriculum Overview

4

  • Course curriculum is somewhat same in all the colleges. It is a bit hard but passing these exams is not that much difficult as it seems. One can pass the exams by starting studying from a month ago. Yes people do fail in these exams but their amount is less.
  • I am doing electrical engineering course. It is a circuital branch which comes under some top branches of college. There is a lot of practical knowledge in this course. Electrical engineering is new here in this college (started in 2018), so as a new department, development is happening every year, so there are no good faculties here.

Internships Opportunities

5

  • Talking about internship scenario at NITJ , it is good for branches like cse, it, ece but is very average for all the other branches. Percentage of students who got summer intern is nearly 50-60%.
  • Students who do not get any summer internship on campus applies for off campus or do un-paid internship somewhere. Among 60, 15-20 gets paid internships. Highest internship stipend was offered by Microsoft which was 1.25 lac per month and lowest was 10,000 given by BIS on campus. Companies most preferred by students are microsoft, mondelez, reliance, Qualcomm etc.
  • In my class, 4 people got PPO from their internships. If ppo given is less than 20 lpa, they can sit for companies coming on campus giving more than 20 lpa otherwise they are not allowed to sit. Internship scenario in cse , it , ece is really good than all other branches.

Placement Experience

5

Placement season in NITJ starts from July ending. Most of the companies come in August and September.

  • 2-3 companies continue to visit every month. 80 percent plus (eligible) students always get placed. College contacts companies to come, they also take resume-building sessions and mock interviews to help students get placed. Till now, the highest CTC offered was 52 LPA, and the lowest is 6 LPA.
  • Most preferred companies for electrical engineering courses are Reliance, Technip Energies, HPCL, IOCL, etc. PSUs. Apart from them, most students go to IT companies and prefer companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Samsung, ENTNT, ZS Associates, etc. Accenture hired 9 students, Oracle also hired 7. Aarti Industries, etc. companies come and hire in bulk. The CTC offered by them is low (5-6 LPA).
  • Yes, I feel the placement process is fair, and the placement committee does all it can to get most students placed. Placement scenario in NITJ is better than many colleges.

Fees and Financial Aid

Complete fee structure of NIT Jalandhar is around 8-10 lacs which includes mess, hostel, and tuition fee.

  • Tuition fee of NIT Jalandhar is 62,500 per semester. For SC, ST candidates there is 0 tuition fee. Also, if family income is less than 1 lac, tuition fee is 0. If family income is between 1 to 5 lacs, 1/3rd of the tuition fee is applicable.
  • Mess and hostel fee is 25,500 per semester. Development fee is 25,000 per semester. Tuition fee is the same in all NITs across India. It is lesser than IITs, which have a 1 lac tuition fee per semester.
  • Apart from these fees, other expenses like a laptop worth 50-60k and routine expenses occur. Yes, this college provides scholarships, but rarely anybody gets them because the criteria set for the scholarship are very difficult, and mostly no one is able to qualify for them.

Campus Life

5

Campus infrastructure is good in NIT Jalandhar.

  • We have a cricket ground, basketball ground, football ground, and many more for sports. There is a huge craze for sports here, and the NITJ team has also won many medals in different inter-NIT competitions. Many sports events happen every year.
  • College has a gym too. It has all the modern equipment, and the gym is really good here. There is no swimming pool on the NITJ campus. Library is good here. We can get almost every book needed for our studies. There is also a big air-conditioned building to study near the library.
  • We do have access to some websites or software, for example, MATLAB. Campus is 154 acres. Roughly 6-700 meters one has to walk to go to classes from their hostels. Students can keep their personal cycles inside the campus, but bikes and cars are not allowed.
  • There is a guest house on the campus where relatives can visit and stay overnight. There are 4-5 cafeterias on the campus. There is also a medical center inside the campus. Campus life is good in NIT Jalandhar. As the campus is lush green and beautiful, students can sit in gardens or walk in nature. After classes, most students gather around some cafeteria and chill. Nightlife is also good here. Snackers remain open till 3 am, and we can have anything we like from there.
  • A lot of students go out of campus to visit many places in Jalandhar. Most visited places are Devi Talab Mandir, MBD mall, Haveli, Curo mall, Jyoti Chawnk, etc. No, outside the campus is not safe because our campus is far from the city and is near a village. So, roaming at night is not safe. Although, there is an entry time of 8 pm, and after 8, you cannot go outside the campus.
  • There are two major fests that happen every year. One is Utkansh and the other is Techniti. Both fests are full of vibe, and people enjoy a lot. Singers like Ninja, Afsana Khan, Hardy Sandhu, etc., have come to these fests to perform.
  • There are so many clubs for different purposes. Major among them are Zeal Club, LADC (debating club), Sanskriti Club, rTist (robotics) club, Daksh Club, Netra (photography) club, Marvellious, Ecstacy (fashion club), Octaves (singing club), SI crew, Criminalz. In terms of value addition to CV, LADC and Zeal clubs are good to be a part of.

Hostel Facilities

5

There are 7 boys' hostels and 4 girls' hostels in NITJ.

  • Girls are not allowed to enter boys' hostels and vice versa. There is strict security regarding this. Among boys' hostels, first-year students get BH1, BH2, and BH5. Among these, BH2 is best and BH5 is worst. When promoted to the 2nd year, we get MBH A, B, and F. All three hostels are big and similar to each other, although MBH A is preferred over the other two. In the final year, we get BH3, BH4, BH6, BH7, and BH7E. Among them, BH6 is the best.
  • Hostel allocation is on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is done online through the portal, and those who register first can choose the hostel and room of their choice. Hostel fee is 35,500 for the first semester for first-year students, and after that, it is 25,500 per semester every year. Mess fee of 15,000 is included in 25,500.
  • Single rooms are given only to final-year students. An extra fee of 3,000 Rs is there for single rooms. There are no hostel timings for boys, but for girls, the timing is 10 pm. For first-year students, both boys and girls have a timing of 6 pm in their first semester.
  • Every hostel has its own mess. Students eat inside the mess only, and it is included in the 25,500 fee. Food quality in the mess is good compared to other colleges. The mess menu changes every month. Every hostel and area is properly guarded, and there are cameras everywhere. There is 1 guard per hostel.
  • In the first year, there are four students in a single room. Rooms are big and spacious. My first year was online due to COVID, so my offline college started in the 2nd year. In the 2nd year, two-person sharing is there. I chose MBH A hostel as suggested by my seniors, but honestly, there isn’t much difference between the three hostels.
  • In rooms, you get one bed, one chair, one table, one fan, and one bulb. Hostels have Wi-Fi facilities also. Every floor in the hostel has two washrooms on both sides, and a water cooler is also on every floor. Floors are cleaned every day by hostel janitors.
  • We do have a common room in every hostel. It has a TV, chess, carrom, table tennis, etc. Students have to clean their rooms by themselves. Washrooms and floors are cleaned regularly by janitors.

Exam Structure

  • To get a seat in NIT Jalandhar, we have to appear for JEE mains exam. No other option is there to get into this college.
  • JEE exams two times in a year. You can give both exams or any one of them and the best of two would be considered. To get NITJ, your score in jee mains would have to be around 93 percentile plus.
  • Jee mains exam roughly happens around January and one in April. After JEE mains, JEE advanced happens in may or June. Then in July, JOSAA counselling begins, all the NITs, IITs are listed in this counselling and one can get these colleges from this counselling only.
  • Josaa counselling has its own procedure which includes 5-6 rounds. It runs for almost a month. If one doesn't get any seat in Josaa, he/she can sit for csab counselling which is a spot round counselling and can get college from there. College starts from August. There is no other way to get admission here apart from jee exam.

Admission

I appeared for JEE mains exam and I got this college from JOSAA counselling which is being done after JEE exam. I chose this college on factors like NIRF ranking, distance from my home town, placement records etc. Apart from NIT Jalandhar, I also filled NIT Jaipur, NIT Hamirpur etc. according to the distance from hometown and other factors. I did not get into them because of my JEE rank. I was getting a lower branch there and I got a circuital branch in my college. To get admission in NIT Jalandhar, you have to appear in JEE mains exam. The cutoff to get this college depends on what is your category.

Faculty

5

Teaching methodology of faculties here in my course is traditional. Some faculties do take efforts to make the department stand out among others. Mostly, we have guest faculties in my department.

  • There is so much strictness regarding attendance and everything. There is a 75 percent compulsory attendance criterion. If one fails to fulfill this criterion, they get detained from that subject. There are students who got detained due to lesser attendance. Although, some teachers give relaxation up to 65 percent.
  • 100 plus students can be easily seated in a classroom. In my specialization, there are 60 students. Girls to boys ratio is approximately 1:3 here. There is a lot of cultural diversity in NIT Jalandhar because it is a NIT. People from the south and east side are also here. Apart from them, international students also study here.
  • Peer group is good here. There is a lot of collaboration and harmony among the students, and group studies and all happen. There are no marks as such for participating in the classroom, but it depends on the faculty. Every faculty has its own method to teach and grade. Mostly, students attend classes due to the 75 percent attendance criteria.

Placement Experience:

The student become eligible for campus placements from 5th semester. The companies visited per year are approximately 200. They claim 100% placements but in reality they divide students into placement and non- placement batches called tpp and ntpp. If you slip up even once, you will be debarred from the tpp group. The highest package is 53 LPA. The average package is 4.5 LPA. Companies like JP Morgan, TCS, Capgemini, PlaySimple, Cognizant, Nokia, Philips, Morgan Stanley, PWC, KPMG, EPAM, Watchguard, High radius, OYO, Coding Ninjas, Samsung, etc have already came. More companies are yet to come. Since the student intake is too much, placements are really hard to get since there is too much competition. In the end, people get hired in mass recruitment companies and get minimum pay of 3-4 lpa. My plans are apply for off-campus jobs and start working in corporate after the degree. If I don't get a job, I haven't decided what I will do next.
