What Students Say
Likes
- The thing I liked the most about NIT Durgapur is it's management, the management is very strict with first year student but it's for our own good . College is strictly against ragging and it's really efficient too.
- The girls to boys ratio is quite good , like in our computer science batch theres a total of 187 students in which 36 girls and rests are boys which is nearly 1:4 good for a NIT. Also girls here are very friendly 😉.
- There's a committee for everything in our college formed by students. So whatever the problem is it will always be formed in a matter of time,we just have to make a complaint about it on whatsapp group and everything that's bothering u will be fixed
Dislikes
- The most disliked thing by me here is the politics, yes there is politics divided into zones from different States students of India. Here's a student body called Gymkhana which conducts this election which every year cause a real chaos afaik.
- Here exist a culture called zone in or zone out , if u choose to zone in you'll get ragged but along with that you'll get help from alumnis and seniors and even in club entries but if u choose to zone out noone will ever touch u
- Well the mess food quality is quite good but the veg people will have to suffer a bit coz even tho the quality is good but the menu is a lil repetitive which u might not like over time.
Course Curriculum Overview
Well being from computer science department the first year syllabus is nowhere near what I wanted it to be but it's the same as it's in the most IITs and NITs so must be a reason, let's say if u want to take AI ML in future u need to study ecology as well which is in first year curriculum so they all are quite related, don't ignore those subjects.well even in our exam papers each and every question have it own explanation why it is relevant and why is it required to solve real world problems . Well the teaching is good no complaints but the assignments system needs improvement, most of the professors don't even give us assignments they will straight away just throw some books and will tell us to solve as much as we can but not everyone is that self conscious to do things on their own , every professor should look after this . The timing of exams aren't good u will never get enough time to study or syllabus completion, the difficulty is moderate but lack of time will make it 10X harder.
Internships Opportunities
It depends on the kind of Internship you are interested in doing- research internship or industrial Internship. Both have unique ways of approach. For industrial Internship, companies will visit the campus during your 3rd yr. Apply for the Internship position, pass the tests and get selected-simple. And if you are interested in pursuing research internship, the method to get it is a bit more tedious….
Placement Experience
From 6th or 7th semester students become eligible for campus placement, in 3.5 yr of college in BTECH, u will get opportunities for internships and will eventually start earning. This year in the latest batch 8 students got opportunity in Apple India internship and in placement offers Microsoft took 7 students from 2025 batch with a package of 51 LPA. Total no. Of companies visited we're 187 last year with 725 offers. Highest package of CSE as of last year was 81 LPA by Atlantasia and average was 16 LPA due to the recession year but in 2023 it was 21.45 LPA and highest was 70 LPA in mechanical branch. Percentage of students getting placed in 2023 was 86% in CSE and in 2024 it was 69% again due to the recession. My plans after getting the degree is to pursue higher education and not just placement well that depends how my academic will be so maintaining a good CGPA is crucial for me.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are a lot of scholarships but only based on student's castes, is he/she belongs to general category then it might be around 8-9 lakh in the span of 4 years in any branch but if the annual family income is under 1 lakh then he/she will have to pay 0 tution fees if it's between 1-5 lakh then 2/3rd off on tuition fees , for any other lower castes the tuition fees is 0.
Campus Life
Fests: Aarohan(The annual techno management fest) , Avishkar (the tech fest) , Rectasy (the annual cultural fest) . Apart from that a lot others like Recrave(food fest) , spic macay (cultural fest). Sport activities: Volleyball, basketball, cricket , football, table tennis, badminton courts are widely available, there are two football grounds one of them is oval ground the biggest one. There's a SAC (student activity center) to help the students playing Inter NIT tournaments. Clubs : there are more than 20 clubs including tech clubs for tech savy people, cultural clubs , Art clubs whatever u like there's a perfect club for u to help and grow .
Hostel Facilities
1) Facilities in hostel rooms : well there is everything u need , in first year there is 3 sharing rooms , 3 lockers , 2 fans , the space is big enough, water coolers , common rooms , wifi with a speed of 15 Mbps but in library the speed of wifi is a lot higher so don't worry , bathroom with 1:3 Ratio of western to Indian toilets . 2) well while I can't share the menu here coz it's always changing maybe u will get different but only things I can say is on Wednesday there is special dinner , on Tuesdays there's only veg menu . In evening u will get snacks in mess but have to pay for it , there's several food courts outside the hostel where u can buy a lot other fast foods with money.
Admission
1) well my first choice was NIT DURGAPUR CSE , even tho I was getting better colleges at my rank I still wanted it for convenience coz west bengal is my homestaye. 2) No i didn't get any rejection letter from any other colleges since this was my first preference 3)To gain admission to NIT Durgapur, students must primarily take the Joint Entrance Examination JEE Main for most undergraduate courses, with the preferred exam being JEE Main itself for BTech programs. For postgraduate courses like MTech, the preferred exam is GATE. 4) Eligibilty criteria: its the same as the most other govt colleges .75% in 10+2 even for qualifying JOSAA criteria and 65% for reserved categories 5)Cutoffs: you must need a minimum of 95+ percentile if u want to land in any branch here in Btech belonging from general category for reserved categories even a percentile of 85+ would be enough to get the lower branches. For CSE u need at least 99+ or 98.8+ percentiles in general and 97+ in Reserved categories
Faculty
Faculty-student Ratio: 224 faculty members and more than 3300 enrolled students so the faculty to student ratio is somewhere around 1:14 Relationship with faculties: well some of them are really really good and easily approachable I'll even say most of them are but not anything is perfect so basically a few professors are bad too , in my section H the faculties are quite good and they explain everything perfectly such as Rp nanda sir in mechanics, Rajiv sir the best in Cs , prof Sahoo in physics and others but in section F math faculty Anita pal is bad , also our math faculty Md Firoz Ali is godly , his explanation is extremely good never thought a college professor can explain that good. Exams: (Odd semester)Mid semester in September mostly, end semester in November or early December (Even semester) Mid semester in March and end sem occur in April or early may the students will get a summer break of 2.5 months Difficulty: it's not difficult to get a cgpa of 8+ here.
