Life at IIT Kharagpur

I will be honest, I haven't choose mechanical engineering. I just got this from my jee advanced score. But the curriculum of mechanical engineering is quite good here. They teach theory and then practical of almost everything. You will be dealing with real world problems. But It's the 2nd toughest branch of IIT Kharagpur. So, you can think what's the difficulty level is.

Since I haven't done any internship yet so I can't tell about how and what are the internships here. But in 3rd year doing internship is compulsory. Many students apply for Google internship in 3rd year but only one or 2 get it.

Students are eligible for CDC in 3rd year and eligible for placement in 4th year. The average package of mechanical engineering department is 20LPA. Around 90-95% students get placed every year(of course who are eligible for placements). Many of the students go for Tech companies and also take PPO. I am planning to go for Tech companies.

I paid 56,750 for semester 1 and will be paying 42050 for semester 2. The fee may increase.The tueation fees which is 100000 is not applicable for SC, ST and PwD, one can also apply for fee waiver and get upto 100% tueation fee waiver as per family income. Students studying here are eligible for all scholarships for Btech.

There are 2 main fests here kshitij and spring. There's another sports fest shourya. The library here is very big so you can find every type of books here. Classes have AC and projecter. You can play all the sports you know, here. There are various club. I am sorry I have counted in numbers. But whatever you want to do there's a club/society for it.

I first year one gets a 3 sharing room with 3 fans, 3 beds, 3 tube lights and 3 study table with chairs. There's also a balcony attached to room. Food is not good enough. And there's no lift in the hall. The halls are inside campus. You can keep fans/coolers of your own. There is no restrictions about going out and coming into hall

I mainly selected branches form IIT Kharagpur only in josaa counciling. And I got that. I already knew my score is not enough to get into a IIT Bombay's good branch so there's no point of selecting. And IIT Kharagpur is the closest IIT from my home.

The ratio of faculty is to students is around 1:21. The faculties are easily approachable. You will have their mail id and can mail them anytime about absence in class and all. I can't provide the names but HoDs usually teach good. There are some other profs. who teach good but not all. Exam is very difficult here. There are 2 tests of each subject and trust me questions are very tough. One test is before mid sems and other is before end sems.
