Remarks

Zakir Husain Delhi College is one of the oldest institutes of North India. It is more than 300 years old. It stands by its heritage value. Hitherto prime minister Ms Indira Gandhi laid the foundation of our college. It boasts of one of the best infrastructures of University of Delhi. The library and the Auditorium is actually a state of art! The college is lush with greenery and exotic flowers for which we have rewarded the 1st position in Flower Show every year. The faculty and the administration is well disciplined and serious for our studies. The societies are flourishing and hardworking. And the friends you will make will stay with you throughout your life. What else do you need from a college? Go for it!

Entrance Preview

ZHDC is considered one of the most prestigious college of University of Delhi. The course I wanted to pursue had one of the best faculty in this college that's why I applied here. The infrastructure of this college is way better than most of the DU colleges and now a new state of art, 9 storeyed building with underground parking is on its way!

Course Curriculum Overview

5

The course I had opted for was pretty comprehensive and relevant to the present need of the hour. We were the first batch of recently introduced Choice Based Credit System (CCE). Under this program, we had the freedom to choose any one paper other than our course. For example I was in Zoology, I had the freedom to choose Psychology as my Generic Elective subject for 4 semesters. Since I had studied both Psychology and Zoology at the same time, I am now eligible to sit for all M.A. Psychology entrances as well!

Internships Opportunities

Yes. The internships are provided under summer/winter/year-long categories. The placement cell is pretty active and keep organising placement drives for Jobs as well as internships. The internships can be both paid and unpaid. For Science students like me, we had the opportunity to enroll in 2-year long research projects with our department professors.

Placement Experience

3

We have our own college placement cell. Companies like Abott, Reliance, ICICI bank and many others visit our campus for recruitment. Major placement happens for Commerce students. However a few companies come especially for Science background students as well. But it's rare.

College Events

4.5

The college has more than 30 departments with their own annual fests. There are so many societies who keep organising their fests, inter college competitions, talk shows, Exhibitions and so much more. The college also organises annual day, college fest, sports competitions, Ted talks, annual lecture series, NCC event and Annual Convocation ceremony with huge signatories!

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee is close to negligible. For other non-Science courses the annual fees is 4000-6000. For Science courses like mine the maximum fee is 12000 per year due to the cost of labs and apparatus. Our college professors have a union which collects a certain amount of money from the salary of each staff and then that is kept aside to provide financial aid to underprivileged students to meet up the college expenses! Such a noble cause! Moreover our college provides scholarships and fee waivers to any student who needs it.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes. Our college provides scholarships under two categories:- 1) For financially weak students the college provides scholarships or fee waivers. Apart from that as mentioned earlier, our professors themselves fund the needy students. 2) For meritorious students the college provides cash prizes and scholarships annually. The categories of being meritorious ranges from excelling in their subjects to scoring in sports and getting accolades in Extra Curriculum.

Campus Life

5

Campus life is pretty exciting. The gentry includes students from all walks of life. You can find students from all states, class, community, religion, gender and courses (ofcourse ). The best part of the college is that it accepts and celebrates diversity. Unlike the popular notion of Zakir Husain College being dominated by students of a particular religion, we have representatives of all backgrounds. The college is seen bursting with fests, sports events especially football for which ZHDC is popularly known.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The college does not have any hostel facility at the moment. The outstation students generally take up PG/flats in these locations:- 1) Paharganj/Dariyaganj 2) Lakshmi Nagar 3) GTB near Vishwavidyalaya 4) Saket 5) etcetera For food we have a canteen providing vegetarian food at subsidised rates. You can find almost everything from Pastries to South Indian dishes to Rajma Chawal and so many more to name. The food's taste varies everyday according to the mood of our cook so you have good days and the bad days :')

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network is not that strong to be honest. The seniors are helpful if we ask for their help but in general there is no old alumni network as such.

Exam Structure

The exams are divided semester wise. Each semester has 5 to 6 papers which we have to clear. We are marked with grade points. The Grade point of 8 to 10 is considered exceptionally good at college level. In each semester we have internals including class tests, viva and practical. Then in Externals we have a viva and practical too under an external examiner's supervision. After that we have to sit for 3 hour long theory exam ranging from 50 to 75 marks varying in each subject.

Admission

We have to apply for University of Delhi online. Thereafter various colleges declare their own cutoffs for each subject. We have to match our 12th boards marks with the cutoffs and then go over there for admissions. The same was applicable for ZHDC. We have to carry our required certificates and marks sheet. Admissions is also given under sports/ECA quota.

Faculty

5

Very honestly speaking, our college has one of the most hardworking teachers. One of our professor was so dedicated to complete our course, he came to take our class even though he was down with dengue! Our college professors are pretty strict when it comes to giving marks. They will only mark us with good grades if we deserve it. Our college professors do not provide free grades to all students just to show good batch results unlike most of the North Campus colleges. All of the teachers are PhD. and pretty reputed in their own fields of study.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum is filled and designed according to the emerging technologies in the food and organic industries, one gets to know about the real life food processing and various processes which are involved in between before it reaches to our hands. The area of improvement could be instead of spending more time in just different experiments in the lab, there can be workshops and speaker sessions could be there to give real exposure to the students.

Our course (B.Sc Hons. Mathematics ) is more focused towards descriptive and theoritical method since my course belong to pure mathematics along with that I have statistics in my generic elective (GE) which is more application based. Our course is structured more towards reseach part. Whereas the commerce and economics courses are more relevant to practical industry knowldege. The usual struture is divided into two part in each sem generally known as end and mid sem exam. Whereas there exist weekly and monthly examination which majorly depends upon the teaching style of the faculty.
