What Students Say
Likes
- The flexibility and teaching style of professors. Whenever I had a doubt be it in course curriculum or related to extracurriculars, I would always find a professor by my side. Even if someone missed labs, he/she could do arrears for the missed lab.
- The strong friendship and bonding that the students shared among themselves.
- The strong placement and higher studies potential of the college students and research potential of the college as a whole.
Dislikes
- The course curriculum is more extensive than other colleges and GATE syllabus.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course as a well is vast yet designed to prepare the students to be great future engineers. The syllabus is more than that of other colleges and GATE syllabus and there are also quite a number of labs and sessionals in each semester, At the end of each sem, there's a semester exam plus there are class tests in between sem courses. The course as a whole is difficult but designed to shape you into a great person. I would suggest including some modern subjects in the syllabus and excluding the old-school ones.
Internships Opportunities
Although the number of companies that come for internships is not as high as placements, still 20-25 from EE get internships every year. The reason for comparatively lower numbers is that JU allows mostly those companies for internships who may give a full-time role after the internship period and also JU does not allow internships of more than 2 months while most companies look for 6-month interns.
Placement Experience
From 7th sem onwards, students may sit for on-campus placements. Atleast 50 companies visit every year and nearly all students get placed. Highest package = 50LPA and Average is nearly 15LPA Above 80% students get placed every year (excluding higher studies students) I am planning to do job for now and parallely prepare for a PhD degree from US or Canada.
Fees and Financial Aid
Only Rs.10k for 4 years of your education here. Also, there are a large number of scholarships like Siemens Scholarshipto assist the students financially and educationally. I have personally achieved the Richard E. Merwin international scholarship from global IEEE Computer Chapter which is given to only 15-20 students world-wide annually. A wide range of companies visit JU for on-campus internships and placements. Personally, I have been awarded Analog Design Engineer job role at Texas Instruments for a stipend of 36 LPA.
Campus Life
Classrooms are well-endowed with good sitting benches and tables and good blackboards for writing. There are also projectors in every classroom for presenting pdfs and ppts. Football, cricket, and basketball are widely played with annual competitions held and there are even state-level opportunities if you perform well. There are many student-run clubs and societies like IEEE, XLR8, E-Cell, JUSC, etc. for the technical ones with great activities that will help your career growth too. Other than that, there are other clubs too like Dance, Debate and others which you can join based on your passion.
Admission
To be eligible for Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University, you have to be within the specified rank range after the final decentralized counseling round. Like all other government colleges, 50% of seats are reserved for different categories. For entering into JU, you have to give WBJEE which is held once every year.
Faculty
There are approx. 35 profs in EE dept and a batch strength of 140 students. The overall teaching quality is good with concise and crisp class notes. There's also regularity in classes and the students may approach the profs anytime to seek guidance and help.
