- Political environment is very enlightening and helps students shape opinions and develop a deeper understanding of the society.
- Academic excellence- A lot many professors are graduates from world class universities including MIT and Havard. Hence they try to maintain their standard of teaching similar to those institutions.
Dislikes
- The world here in too utopian. This place doesn't feel like the real world.
- The professors are not very understanding if you are going into corporate or preparing for some civil service exam. They would rather have you do a PhD
Course Curriculum Overview :
The curriculum is updated in the best way possible. They teach you what not a lot of universities teach. They try to keep the syllabus relevant to the most recent scenarios. For example they wouldn't teach you the standard textbooks of macro and micro rather they suggest research papers. This kind of curriculum works best if one wants to get into a PhD program abroad.
Internships Opportunities :
Internships for economics department are provided in a number of ministries of the GOI. Moreover, private firms also give students opportunities to work on a monthly basis. Abhijeet sen rural intership is an annual internship for economics students. There is a GPN internship provided to CISLS and CESP students to do some research work which pays 20000 per month for a few months. Internships are mostly paid.
Placement Experience :
College placements are offered in economics department after MA i.e. in CESP and CITD. The jobs are most in dats fields or economic research. The packages range from 7LPA to 15LPA. Companies like HSBC, EXL, PWC, CII visit every year in economics department for recruitments. There is a percentage criteria decided by every firm but if you have a 6 our 9 gpa you are good to go. Moreover, a lot students pursue higher research from India and abroad after doing a master's from JNU. the professors here have incredible networking which aids the students get admission in foreign universities.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Tuition fee is minimal. Just 150 rs. per semester. A lot of scholarships are also provided including MCM dor kar financially weaker students and a lot of other scholarships from ICSSR and UGC. Moreover, the placement facility provided on campus especially in the Economics department matches that of MBA colleges. Data analysis jobs and other jobs pertaining to economic analysis and policy reseach and provided.
Campus Life :
The only event worth attending in JNU are it's annual elections. There is a lot that goes on 24/7 while elections are going on in the campus. Moreover, political parties and academic groups keep organising lecture events inviting many big personalities to deliver the lecture or talk. There is a 24/7 reading room available for students in a 9 floor tall library being home to thousands of books. There is also a stadium with all the courts in proper shape for fitness and sports. Moreover all the hostels are occupied with gyms and table tennis tables.
Hostel Facilities :
There are dual occupancy rooms for bachelors and masters students. PhD scholars get a single room after completing 2 years of their PhD. The rooms are in a bearable condition although there is a much needed infrastructural repair that needs to be done. The hostel fees is 1500 per semester with around 2500? for mess fee every month. The food quality is average with non vegetarian food being served thrice a week. For people who don't want to allot hostels a lot of PGs are available in Munirka and Vasant Kunj area.
Admission :
Admissions are done via CUET UG and PG for graduation and post graduation. The cutoffs are quite high but someone with a basic understanding of the course will be able to crack it. There are deprivation points given to female students and people belonging to backward castes and rural background. Admissions to PhD are done via UGC NET. People who hold a JRF have the opportunity to sit directly for the interview in some of the centres.
Faculty :
The faculty is quite experienced with a minimum experience of 15 years of teaching in india and abroad. A lot of them are graduates from world class institutions like MIT. They are very helpful when it comes to their course. No doubts are considered stupid. Moreover, they don't follow the regular cramming and writing out in exam kind of learning. Rather they set questions in a way to test your actual understanding of the topic leaving no scope for cheating as well. They are very frank with no hierarchies set up. They stay in the same campus alongside the student hostels and often eat and relax in the same canteens and dhabas as the students.
