Remarks

Overall, the college is good in academic and non acadmeic aspects. There a lot of good and effective systems in college management which are always open to improvements, however kharagpur as a place is not very well connected.

Entrance Preview

I took Jee(Advanced) exam to get admission in this college, i scored 218 marks and i opted for this college because of its widespread alumni comnect, rick culture, good professors and brand equity.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

The course structure is very flexible, electives start from the 4th semester itself. In the 4thd and 5th semester, there are Humanities and IT electives, thereafter there are open electives in almost every semester. The curriculum is heavily focused on quantitative economics, maths, and finance, policy economics can be pursued in electives. There is a lot of inter-discipline education, heavily with the departments of mathematics and computing and industrial and systems engineering.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, the Career Development Centre, at IIT Kharagpur arranges for scholarship in the 4th year in this 5 year integrated M.Sc. Course. There is a fairly high demand for this course in the industry and a lot of people bag interns at very very reputed investment banks, consultancy firms, data analytics firms etc. Stipend range from 10k-80k per month.

Placement Experience

5

The Placement for this course is close to 100%. The companies that come are divided broadly into 1) consultancy 2) data analytics 3) finance 4) operations 5) investment banks Operations and investment banks are generally the ones who offer fat paychecks. Credit Suisse and Deutsche bank offer a salary in excess of 20lpa. Avg/median salary hovers around 12lpa.

College Events

4.5

The two big fests at IIT Kharagpur are Kshitij(techno management fest) and spring fest( cultural fest). Spring fest is among the most energetic and costly fests in india. People come from all over the world to have a feel of spring fest. It is very popular among indian students because of good execution and high budget. Kshitij is the pride of iit kgp and the pride of india, it is the largest techno management fest in asia, a true learning experience with prize money in the order of 50 lacs!

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is based on categories. For central list SC/ST category students, there is no tuition fee. For general and obc category students, fees is deoendent in income levels. The total fee( mess+ hostel+tution+ infra) can range from 30k-180k per semester based on your category and family income. Affordability is mostly a non issue as most banks offer very cheap loans and if your income is <9lpa then iit pays your interest for the time of your stay at iiy kgp.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes, SBI scholar loan is a facility that is avaialble to all students of iit kgp. It provides loan to students at apprpximately 8% interest and iit kgp offere a scholarship wherein the students with family income <9lpa get their interest paid by iit kgp till they passout. There is also INSPIRE scholarship for students enrolled in pure science courses which amounts to rs 3k/month

Campus Life

4.5

The gender ratio is approx 1:10( girls: boys), the extra curricular culture is very strong and there a lot of open iit and intra society events taking place on campus. The labs are mostly equipment with mordern equipment and good aura. Sports avenues are many in number and are well maintained.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

My hostel room is a double room sharing based sharing room with attached bathrooma( 1 attached to 2 rooms so a ratio of 1:4). Cleaning of rooms and bathrooms is regular. Sports facilities are okayish, people prefer table tennis usually but cricket, football are also available. The music room is usable and instruments are in good condition. The mess food tastes good initially in the starting of the semester but it geta boring as the semester progresses. It might not be very tasty but it is clean and hygienic.

Alumni/Alumna

There are cells for alumni connections. Alumni regularly donate to makr iit kharagpur and kharagpur a better place. A lot of alumni are in good positions in both india and abroad. Seniors are mostly very helpful, they teach a lot of things and help you stay on the right track. They help you settle in the new place and make you feel at home.

Exam Structure

The department is very chilled out. There are only 2-compulsory lab courses in the entire span of studying economics at IIT Kharagpur. Contact hours are among the lowest among all branch in the institute. The exam structure comprises of 1 midsemester, 1 end-semester and 1 internal quiz in every semester other than marks for attendance.

Admission

The counseling procedure for admission was through a body called Josaa, where there were multiple rounds of online counseling, I finally reported to IIT Kharagpur(my allotted institute in the final round) and completed some formalities to confirm admission.

Faculty

4

Most of the faculty are very well qualified. A substantial number of them have postgraduate level education and use effective teaching techniques. A lot of them are also working on government/ independent projects on data analytics and economics. Some are also in the process of writing books. I have observed that almost all are economics enthusiasts and are a vivid economics readers. They are also of adjustive nature and mostly friendly, open to suggestions to male courses reach better results.

Course Curriculum Overview:

My decision to choose this course depended on the fact that this course provides you with the opportunity to get various jobs in the industries with a high lpa. But this college does not help much in that aspect. All I had to do was myself. It is my humble opinion that the institution should improve its guidance in the area of its teaching methods. The exams were twice a year and were quite difficult on their own.
