What Students Say
Likes
- The rich peer experience that the campus as a whole, offers you.
- The exceptional approachability of the faculty members, unlike other institutions that I have been to.
- The engaging and motivating aura of the library, inside out.
Dislikes
- May be, they should improve a bit on the front of the hostel infrastructure.
- The campus is real huge, if you're there for a degree with a slightly longer duration, go get hold of a bicycle or a scooty.
Course Curriculum Overview
There are plenty of reasons why one would choose to pursue a Master's degree in English from JNU. The foremost is the liberty that every aspect of this course offers to a student, be it the faculty members or the curriculum itself. Literature is about letting your imagination run wild & CES (Centre for English Studies) offers you this, through the unconventional teaching pattern followed here. The faculty members despite being among the best scholars throughout India, are still extremely approachable and engage with their students at a level that involves all, leaving no student behind. The faculty-student ratio is just perfect, one to one sessions are encouraged. The curriculum itself is very interesting, as compared to the curriculums of other institutions because it is interestingly customized for every fresher batch. This ensures that everything stays in the loop, from the canonical to the contemporary.
Placement Experience
Since JNU is essentially a research institute, a majority of the students here pursue higher studies in academia rather than looking out for jobs. Still, that doesn't mean absolutely zero placement interests or opportunities. One can apply through the placement cell of the university and can grab a job offering a decent package. Talking about myself, I am a UPSC aspirant and belong to the other major lot of students from JNU, apart from those who pursue academics.
Fees and Financial Aid
Trust me, one can't be getting a real "quality education" anywhere else, with the fee structure that is followed in JNU. It is in many ways, the bare minimum. Since students here, come from the weakest of backgrounds, the University also ensures that such students can efficiently avail the benefits of various schemes as per their eligibility. There are scholarship opportunities like the Merit Cum Means Scholarship (MCM) that help students to settle their different expenses. Apart from that, there are various financial assistance schemes available for PwD scholars as well.
Campus Life
JNU celebrates diversity therefore, some or the other cultural event keeps on happening. Talking about the B.R. Ambedkar Central Library consists of 9 floors and so many books & journals that you can't possibly look for the one you want, without the assistance of the e-portal of the library that provides you with the location as well as the availability update of the texts that you want. Apart from this, every Centre has a Reading Room of its own, in its respective buildings. The classrooms and the lecture halls are quite comfortable to sit and study in. All types of sports and extra-curricular activities are encouraged. JNU has a stadium of its own.
Admission
Talking about the eligibility for the course, a candidate must have passed a Bachelor's degree in the 10+2+3 pattern, in any discipline with at least 50% marks. Now that the University takes its postgraduate admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for PG admissions; one can easily find the direct link to the application form on the official website of NTA, as and when the forms are out. The fee for filling out the application form for CUET- PG is 600/- (this is valid for opting for any 3 papers that one might wish to sit for). One would have to pay an additional fee while applying for every extra paper after having applied for 3 papers already (this is regarding the CUET application form). Keep your original documents ready to avoid any unnecessary hustle during the document verification process at the time of admission.
