Remarks
Admission to BITS Pilani, (all Indian campuses)requires you to give an entrance test namely BITSAT. All the details regarding the entrance test can be found on the official website of BITS bitsadmission.com. To be eligible to take admission to BITS Pilani, any campus, you must have a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in the 12th class examination, with at least 60% marks in each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, also all the exams should be taken in one sitting that is if improvement exam is taken it should be taken for all subject (all 5) to be eligible for admission here. There is no reservation of any kind in BITS Pilani (gender or caste or financial status). As such, there is no improvement I would like to see in the admission process except that they do not release the cutoff for each round other than that everything is fine.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose BE in Computer Science. The main reason why I or probably anyone would choose Computer Science is because of the placement associated with it. I am not too sure of the faculty: student ratio but the faculty members are highly approachable and one can directly go to a professor's chamber and ask their queries. The teachers here are highly qualified and competent everyone is a Ph.D. from an IIT or a foreign institute, they have good teaching methods and use slides and other technologies to teach. The term exams happen twice a semester, mindset and comprehensive exams, mindsets generally happen after 2 months after the semester commences, and comprehensive exams after 4 months. The exams are balanced and generally tougher than what is taught during the lecture hours.
Internships Opportunities
Everyone at the end of their Second year is required to do an unpaid internship. The selection process for this internship is based on the CGPA of the student. Various companies like Jio, Nutanix, Samsung, CISCO, etc come for this internship. Apart from this, a paid internship opportunity is also provided to the students which is the summer internship that is done at the end of the third year, Major companies like Google, Uber, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, etc, come for the hiring process. The projects done in the internship help a student become ready for their corporate career.
Placement Experience
In terms of placement BITS, Pilani Hyderabad has a top-notch record, especially for my branch of Computer Science. 7th and 8th Semester students are eligible for campus placements. A total of around 300 companies visited the campus last year and around 710 on-campus offers were made. Some of the major companies that hire from the campus are Microsoft, Apple, Google, Uber, DE Shaw, Adobe, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, etc. The highest domestic package offered last year was 45LPA and the institute average was around 16 LPA with the average package of the CS branch being around 28 LPA. CS branch saw a 100% placement record while in the entire institute around 97% of students were placed. In the current placement drive, the highest domestic package offered is 82 LPA by Atlassian. My plan after getting a degree is to go for a good IT company placement.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee is one of the only issues of BITS Pilani. There is a fee hike of 5% each year and currently, the cost to study here for a 4-year program is around 25 Lacs and for a 5-year program is around 32 Lacs for the course duration. However, if someone is financially weak BITS provides an option for Merit-cum-need scholarship, which is based on the CGPA of the student but to be eligible for this scholarship your family income should be less than 11.5 Lacs per year. Another scholarship is provided that is based on pure merit, the top 1% get a 100% scholarship on tuition fees and the next 2% Get a 40% scholarship. In the first semester I got a 40% merit scholarship, and my CGPA was 9.72, and at the end of 1st year I got a 100% merit scholarship, and my CGPA was 9.87. Apart from these scholarships, one can also earn money through a teaching assistantship that one can apply for and this is a paid assistantship.
Campus Life
The annual technical fest is named Atmos and generally happens in October or November and the cultural fest is named Pearl and happens in March or April. The BITS Hyderabad library is very big and has over 50000 books and any student can access or issue the books from the library. The classrooms are well equipped with all teaching equipment like a whiteboard to show slides and a digital board for the professor to write on. Apart from this almost all the lectures are recorded and provided to students. All the sports are available here and have their teams and a dedicated area dedicated to them. A lot of clubs are present here including the Google Student developer club, Wall Street Club, Traders for stock trading, and much more. Enactus and Nirmaan social groups are also present on the campus, and websites like SWD, sit easily. ml, etc. are made by the students.
Hostel Facilities
Here every student is provided a hostel room and no day scholar is allowed. The quality of the hostel rooms is decent, you get one almirah, table, chair, bed, whiteboard, and a shelf. The mess food quality is decent and the menu is fixed for each week but it's different for each day and you get breakfast, lunch, evening snack, and dinner. You are automatically allotted a hostel room upon your course registration and the cost is 32950 rupees per semester.
