Remarks

The college is an excellent place grow, learn and evolve. The course structure is hectic, but that is what makes good engineers. Bonds developed in the campus last for life. However, the college is not perfect. Staff members of the college often hold narrow views which end up lowering the bars. Even to this day, hostels for men and women are strictly for men and women. Breach of code of conduct results in severe disciplinary actions. Therefore, inclusive education is inadvertently ruled out in the college.

Entrance Preview

I took WBJEE examination and I was ranked 499. I opted for the college because I had never seen a campus so green and serene. Also, the institute offers excellent academic programmes coupled with a fabulous campus life. The residential campus experience enriches the undergraduate life even more. Be it late night studies or inter hall competitions, the campus never sleeps.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

The courses are primarily theoretical. Decent to moderate amount of focus is put into industry experience and internship. The institute lays a lot of stress on research though. Post the IIEST conversion, the institute is flushed with funding, which is reflected by the top notch research infrastructure.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, the college provides internship. Companies like Texas Instruments, CESC, etc visit the campus for pre placement offers. Unfortunately I am unaware of the stipends as I opted for research internship.

Placement Experience

4

The placement scenario is good if not remarkable. The small batch size helps. Most of the students end up leaving the institute with multiple job offers. Organisations like Texas Instruments, Tata Steel, HSBC, Maruti Suzuki, PwC, Deloitte, Coal India, Microsoft, Snapdeal, L&T, etc etc offer high end pay packages. All students were placed. The 20% of students managed to secure a median CTC of 8+ lpa in 2015.

College Events

5

The cultural fest named Rebeca is the largest cultural fest in Eastern India. The event goes on for four days attracting a large mass of students from different institutes. The budget as in 2015 went up to 35+ lakhs making the star cast very special. The institute also conducts a technical and management fest named Instruo. The event hosts a wide array of competitions involving students from multiple engineering colleges across the country.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is feasible. Being a government institution (and therefore heavily subsidised), the semester fee is as low as INR 10,000 a semester. Hostel and mess fees are expensive though, which can go as high as INR 60,000 a year. Almost all commodities are available in the campus. Costs of such commodities are quite cheap compared to market rates.

Fees and Financial Aid

No I have not availed any loan or scholarship facility. Scholarships are available for students who come from modest financial background. Such scholarships are strictly based on merit. Also, some merit scholarships are offered to category candidates.

Campus Life

5

The campus is devoid of any form of politics, whatsoever. The campus life is really spectacular. Events are organised every now and then. There are multiple clubs, namely; music, art, dance, photography, robotics, debate, quiz etc etc. Students are encouraged to join at least one club right from the first year. The gender ratio is however not great. Around 20% of the batch size is comprised of women. That is because of the admission process where women do not have any advantage over men.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Hostels are shared until second year. From third year students are allocated separate rooms. The hostels (known as halls) are well equipped. The mess food is completely managed by students, thus making the food really spectacular. The menu served is quite unheard of among engineering institutions.

Alumni/Alumna

The institute, being the second oldest engineering institution in the country, has a strong alumni network. The alumni cell known as GAABESU (Global Alumni Association of BESU) stays active throughout the year. Many senior managers (even of the likes of CEOs/MDs) who are alumni of the institution visit the campus for placements. The alumni network and senior students are quite helpful and that is because of the sense of fraternity existing in the institute. The bond of the fraternity is accentuated by the memorable four years of campus life and the rich heritage of the institute.

Exam Structure

Two semesters are structured in a year. Each semester has a mid semester examination too. Labs are often carried out quite late through the evening. The institute lays a lot of focus on academics. Long hours coupled with lengthy assignments are quite common. Life on the campus is quite hectic - however, it pays off in the end.

Admission

JEE rank holders are eligible for the selection process. However, seats are filled in accordance to JEE rank. Being a decent rank holder, I managed to secure a seat in the first round of counseling process. Like most entrance processes in India, the counseling process is online. Students need to fill their preferences and then based on rank, shortlists are published.

Faculty

4

The faculty varies with departments. Old departments such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc have knowledgeable and experienced faculty. However, faculty across all departments are equally qualified. In newer departments knowledge lies in buckets. The institute is trying very hard to leverage knowledge bases in new departments.

I’d rate HIT’s placement opportunities as 7.5/10 overall. It’s very good for CSE, IT, and ECE, decent for Electrical and core branches, and improving every year with more companies visiting and better preparation programs. If you’re skilled and consistent — especially in coding, communication, and aptitude — you’ll almost certainly get placed before graduatin
