Remarks
I chose Shiv Nadar University to study Biotechnology as it is a research-oriented course with a greater focus on academics. This course is unique, in that, it is a BSc.course for 4 years, with the last year devoted towards a project dissertation. It also provides the opportunity to take up a minor of any other stream, hence letting the students broaden their skills and knowledge and widening their career reach. There are three schools (Engineering BTech., Natural Sciences BSc. and Humanities) which helps in the students having an interdisciplinary approach to education. The infrastructure at SNU is also well developed. Admission to this college can be taken through JEE Mains scores as well as through their own Scholastic Aptitude Tests and Subject Tests, followed by an interview to complete the admission process. The Shiv Nadar University website can be referred to for any information and has an easy-to-use interface.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course as it was something that I wished to pursue and make a career out of. It involves hands-on experience in the labs and projects that the students will have to complete in order to receive credits for certain courses. The faculty to student ratio is very high considering the fact that the BSc. classes at SNU admit only around 25-30 students per major every year. The professors are also highly qualified and are able to interact with every student directly since they can spend ample time on each student. The exams for the Biotechnology course consist of the usual pen-paper exams as well as submitting reports based on research papers that help us prepare for our careers as academics.
Internships Opportunities
The Career Department also helps students who wish to secure an internship by providing many opportunities as well as training them for these internships and their subsequent placements. The faculty also helps in providing internship opportunities
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placements from the third year and many companies have visited the campus to take in students. The campus has a dedicated department to aid in campus placements which ensures to its level best that every student who does not wish to study further gets placed in a good company.
Fees and Financial Aid
Tuition fees for the BSc. programmes is 50,000 per year (excluding the hostel, mess, and miscellaneous fees). This is much less compared to other private colleges considering the fact the Shiv Nadar Foundation provides money (philanthropy). Financial aid is also provided to toppers in the 12th Board Exams and students who have achieved at the National level in sports. There are many on-campus jobs provided for students who wish to earn some money and these include helping the faculty.
Campus Life
The annual fest called BREEZE and the tech fest is conducted around March and April every year. Apart from these, a sports completion is also conducted to encourage the participation of as many students as possible. The library at SNU is very huge and houses many books including the ones required for the various courses. Different sports such as Basketball, Badminton, Golf, Tennis, Table Tennis, Soccer, and Volleyball to name a few are available for students to take up. Indoor games such as chess are also available. Even horse riding can be learned on campus. There are many clubs that students can join to pursue their hobbies and these range from sports and technical clubs to music and food clubs.
Hostel Facilities
SNU mandates that all students and faculty reside on campus and doesn't allow any day scholars. The mess costs 20000 more and the food tastes very much as any restaurant food would. The menu offers North Indian, South Indian, and other food options for the residents and there is also the concept of Midnight mess to aid students during the night if they wish to stay up late for studies
Admission
SNUSAT and Aptitude Test (select any two subjects)
Interview Experience
The interview was the second round of tests for admission to the University. It included a few professors from the Major chosen by the student and its related streams' professors asking fairly straightforward and simple questions to test the basic fundamentals of the student in that area. Although no extra knowledge is required, it is important to know the fundamentals of the subject. I didn't have to especially prepare anything for the interview.
