Remarks

The college admission procedures were really simple and smooth. I didn't face any issues while going through the various admission steps. The staff and student volunteers were very helpful. It hardly took me 3 hours to get all steps done without any hindrances and by admission got approved by the college authorities the same day itself. The reason for choosing Janki Devi Memorial College was that unlike other colleges, it was just 10 km from my place and 2 mins walk from Karol Bagh metro station which makes it convenient for girl students. I must say that college is really underrated. The faculties of all the departments are dedicated, honest, experienced and approachable. They are well versed in their subjects which makes it easy for the students to learn. I didn't really take any guidance or feeds from anyone rather took a chance and it happened to be one of the best decisions I took.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

I was a science student and after my 12th was really confused about which career path to choose and that was when I decided to pick English majors for my graduation and later explore all career opportunities. The English Department of Janki Devi Memorial College happens to be one of the best in the entire DU circuit. All the professors are highly qualified, experienced and professional in their subjects. Even the Advoc teachers are equally good at their papers. The teachers don't ever restrict their teachings to the particular course books rather cite other works, critical readings, books and critics. The student-teacher ratio is rather applause. 2018 batch has a ratio of 33:1 at a time. The teachers get their course done by the deadline and hold regular tests to help us improve our writing skills. The difficulty level happens to be moderately difficult though everyone is able to pass.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

The placement cell of the college does offer students internship opportunities in various profiles. However many choose to apply via some internship portals. The average duration of an internship is 3 months and most of these would be unpaid just to gain hands-on experience, though few reward with a stipend of Rs 1000-3000 per month.

Placement Experience

3

Various companies like Google Ads, E&Y etc visit college in the odd semesters for recruitments. Students from the Commerce department are mostly hired. A graduate can't expect a really high salary hence one can expect an average package offered Rs 3L. Students are hired for roles in HR, Content Writing, Sales or Finance. On an average 50% of students get placed as many opt to go for post graduation. I too plan to go for post-graduation and then land up with a job in teaching.

Fees and Financial Aid

The College is affiliated under the University of Delhi which is a Central University, hence the course fees at all DU colleges are affordable though it's not same in all colleges. The fees for my course in the first year was just Rs 11,000 but the following year there was a fees hike and we paid approximately Rs 14,000 and Rs 15,000 for the third year. Though there was a bit of inflation in the annual fees yet it is very affordable. The College offers a scholarship for students coming from poor households and sports students who play at the national level. Every year all the department toppers and other winners are rewarded with cash prizes and remuneration in fees. For more information on the scholarships and policies, you can visit the college website.

Campus Life

4

Campus life is social life at JDMC is up to the mark of what one expects at any DU college. Since college has a mixed crowd one can find people from all states and sections of society. Symphony is the annual 3-days college fest organised by the college in the month of January. It welcomes students from across different colleges and universities, and it is fun to meet and greet various personalities. The rock concert on the last day is the show stealer. All the departments of college host their own annual fests throughout the academic year. The college library is a huge gallery which has a resource room containing n number of books and a spacious and silent reading room. One can easily find the books on any topic either in a hardcopy in the racks or online at the e-resource centre. College offers various sports and games options for students. They even represent at the national levels. There are also numerous clubs, societies and communities that one can enrol in.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Since I'm from Delhi, I didn't avail for the hostel. The college has one hostel on campus named Krishna Hostel which was inaugurated in 2018. The hostel is spread over 4 floors equipped with all sorts of facilities. One can either choose an AC or non-AC room. The rooms are spacious, well-ventilated and clean, with housekeepers. The warden is a friendly and approachable person who takes great care of all the girls. The quality of the food is fine and the canteen offers some good choices. To avail the hostel room, one needs to register on the college website and the rooms are allocated on the basis of merit. Many students who fail to get the room to choose PGs or rented flats which are much cheaper compared to college hostel. You can find PGs in Karol Bagh, Rajender Nagar, Jhandewalan and Patel Nagar which are at close proximity to campus.

Course Curriculum Overview:

British classics, Indian writing, postcolonial literature builds a strong foundation in literary analysis, critical thinking, and interpretation, which are useful skills. As for comprehensiveness, the curriculum is quite broad. It covers multiple literary periods, genres, and critical theories over the three years, so you’re not really missing out on the essentials. In that sense, it feels academically complete. But sometimes, it leans more towards breadth over depth you move quickly from one topic to another.

There's a placement cell and placement drives do happen in college but genuinely the package offered is not really considerable. After the 4th semester students are considered to sit in the placement drives though I would say it is not very efficient and fruitful.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.
