Remarks
The college administration need to improve a lot. More interaction with the students is required to know about the issue that are faced by the students in matters of hostel amenities facilities provided for entertainment and matters like this. The authorities should make the system more transparent in matters of allocation of resources for the students so that they can have the full knowledge of the facilities that are promised to them.
Entrance Preview
I took AIEEE (in 2011 it was AIEEE which has changed to JEE MAINS AND ADVANCED as of now). I scored 132 and secured a rank of 4605.I wanted a good college close to my home town and this was a great option. NIT Durgapur was a national level college which offers good education and the campussing is great as well. There were ample opportunities and so I opted for this college. ELectronics and Communication Engineering is the latest and the most demanding engineering today. Everything is made smaller and smaller like from mobile phones to computers to all other electronics devices and also everything is automated today thanks to the contribution of VLSI and embedded systems which contributes to this field. Communication is not to be left out. We are now in the world of 4G connectivity and will step towards 5G in due course of time. So this subject needs no further explanation. To add to all these NIT Durgapur being a national level college had the ECE dept since 1983. So there ware no second thoughts.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was good and being a central government institut, the structure and the syllabus followed can be compared to any of the top berth colleges in India.Of course the main subjects focused into the subject in depth and the electives also added the other flavours along with it. Electives like Radar Engineering,Information Theory and Coding,Biomedical Engineering and others do expose the students in various arrays of engineering and fundamentals. Also I would like to state that if electives such as practical visits to the industry taking up a small project is included apart from the internship or industrial visit at the end of 6th semester in appended into the curriculum then it can be of great help adding an extra flair to the overall process.
Internships Opportunities
Our college has a programme for internship in CER, SWITZERLAND at the end of 6th semester. The process is shortlisting by CV followed by interviews. The total expense in borne by the college. This is a very lucrative internship provided by the college. Well no of companies that came for Electronics and Communication were limited as the trend of this department is to go for internships in various programmed in IITs,IIMs and IISCs. Most of the students opted for programs in several IITs getting stipend of about 10000 INR per month. I did internship from IIT KHARAGPUR. Although some did have industrial trainings. In CSE department companies like AMAZON,FKIPKART,MICROSOFT do offer interns and they pay a lump sum amount as a stipend with finally giving a pre placement offer.
College Events
There were many fests held in our college. The fests we Aaroha- This was the annual techno-management fest of our college and it was the second largest fest in our college after RECSTACY. Events like robotics, treasure hunt, debates on management issues and others were common along with several other events. LUG fest- LUG stands for linux users group and they organized fests every year relating to coding and programming. Pretty much challenging and interesting, this invited the giants of coding in the college. They had several computer games events as well such as racing and fighting. MNTC This was organised by the mats and tech club and this held brain teasers and other puzzle solving rounds along with other events.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The semester fees was 24800 and 25000 alternately. The fee structure is determined by the centre and nothing can be done. Though my personal comment would be to reduce it since it is a government college but after all it all relies on the HRD.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes the college do provide internships for two types Excellent academics-an exam is conducted after selecting some of the best students. Also college conducts exams for scholarships given by companies for academic excellence. Minority and economically backward internships-college does provide scholarships for minority groups such as SC,ST,OBC and also for economically poor students.
Campus Life
Overall the campus life is just great. The gender ratio is 7:2 (boys:girls) and that is quiet okay for an engineering college. There are various types of fests that are held in the college like technical fest, cultural fest, management fest, coding fest, maths and tech fest and so on. Students participate and the ambience remains great and very inspiring. The fests do provide a boost up in field of knowledge and entertainment as accordingly they are held. There are various competitions that are held in various fields and all are merged in the various fests that occur in the college. The labs of our college are developing at a good rate I would say. Initially the quality was not upto the mark but slowly and steadily the condition is improving. There are playgrounds where the students do flex out their muscles and talents in various domains such as cricket, football, hockey. There are also provisions for Tennis,Basketball,Table tennis in each of the hostels,Badminton as well. There is also a gymnasium for maintaining a good shape. Workshops The college also manages workshops on various fields throughout the year in which lots of students participate and they share their knowledge in the respective domains. Cultural Societies Well their are devoted clubs that cater to this criteria. They are drama club,SPIC MACAY,Music Club,Sports club,Dance club,Literary circle. Nurturing the cultural side of the students do go well hand in hand along with the academics.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities is above average. We used to pay 800 in a semester for staying in the hostel and mess bills used to come around 2500 per month. The food menu was in our hand where one student becomes the mess secretary for a month monitoring the food that is served to the students. There was common rooms in all the hostels and the common rooms are better in the recent hostels. There was accessories like carom board and table tennis board but there is severe dearth of surveillance which leads to misuse.
Alumni/Alumna
There is an alumni network which is pretty much active and also get-togethers are arranged which goes off fine. But I would like to add that the alumni should be more interactive in raising the problems faced by the college on a larger platform if they have the reach.
Exam Structure
The exams were pretty rigorous. We had to work hard in order to secure good marks in the exams both in the written and the lab practicals. The surveillance was pretty tight which led to many disqualifications from the exam halls and in the whole exam in my time.
Faculty
Well in my department the faculty consisted of fairly good professors. They taught well and had an expertise in the domain they taught. Some of the professors were really great in terms of interaction reaching out to the students and helping them in times of need. Still I would say that an improvement is required where the practical as well the theoretical knowledge needs to be transferred in a package of improved quality. In other departments there were good professors too. Some were very experienced and shared a good place in academic and research platforms in various organizations as in our departments. Overall the faculty is good.
