Remarks
The college management is a disappointment, to say the least. Having stepped into 2016, we'd expect a more inclusive system that embraces technology. However, there is no system to pay the fees via net-banking (The current procedure would make you want to break your head, and that would be less painful), Exam results are sometimes out after the end of the next semester. The only consolation is that we still seem to be in a better position than some colleges. Also, I'd like to mention that I may not be complete in my evaluation as this is only a personal opinion.
Entrance Preview
I got through COMED-K, counselling rounds. Architecture students write the NATA exams, and these scores are tallied along with their 12th grade Board exam results. I chose BMS as there was a trend that followed in the counselling session - which was supposedly the second best for the course, after RV.
Course Curriculum Overview
The syllabus, when seen in the syllabus copy seems varied and transparent. A lot of scope for learning, one would presume. Through the third and fourth year, we were offered electives in the subjects- Heritage conservation, Ecology, Interior Design, Product Design, Photography and Urban Design.
Internships Opportunities
Architecture students are not offered internships, we must seek them ourselves. I'm currently interning in Chennai. The general stipend offered varies from Rs.3,000 to Rs,10,000 per month.
Placement Experience
Again, very few companies seek Architecture students. Firms such as Atkins do come for placements, are about 2-3 students are selected finally.
College Events
BMS holds the ground record for having the best Inter-collegiate fest in Bangalore, UTSAV. The functioning of the fest is a serious business at college. Other fests held are Inter-departmental. (NIRMAAN, the Civil Engg. fest is one of the best in the south Indian zone). I was the College Dance Coordinator in my 3rd year, and a Senior Coordinator for Cultural events in my 4th year.
Fee Structure And Facilities
EXPENSIVE- for students who have come through the COMED-K exam (General Category).I have paid Rs.1,20,000/- per annum. This is inclusive of my internship year, when I stepped into college twice this semester.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
There are various scholarship opportunities, but I'm not aware of many of them in detail. These are mainly provided to people who have excelled in academia or sports.
Campus Life
BMS has a relaxed atmosphere in general. A very varied crowd. There is hardly any gender bias (except the Mechanical Dept. :P)Hostel parties are fun and regular. Many cultural clubs are being formed every year. As the crowd is varied, and from different walks of life, there is hardly any intolerance with regard to ethnicity and race. If there is one thing that stands out, is the unity amongst its students. The students are from various economic stratas. We have a very inspiring alumnus - Hema Bidre, who fought all economic struggles (her father was a rickshaw driver), and is presently serving the Indian Naval Forces.
Hostel Facilities
Several PGs are around the college. A decent room (3sharing) could be found in the budget - 4-10k), however students prefer to rent apartments, and share them with their batchmates. The hostel mess isn't the greatest (A student found a lizard in her food once, and the mess was boycotted for a while). But they do offer a good variety of food.
Alumni/Alumna
BMS alumni meets happen on an yearly basis. Some engineering students have gone ahead in their lives to become CEOs of indsutrial setups, some have become successful VJs, some are now India's most respected architects.
Exam Structure
The Exam structure isn't extremely hectic. We have 3 main stints of Tests in one semester, followed by the Semester end exam. However, there are ongoing reviews which happen on an almost weekly basis.
Faculty
This is where it hits a steep low. With only a few WELL qualified professors, the assistant professors who (without a specialisation, had to handle almost every subject). The visiting faculty was almost always amazing, as they were currently working in the field too.
