Remarks
Negative remarks: Alumni relations is very weak and any effort put forward by the students to grow it is stopped by the college. Placement activities still require support as majority of the companies are IT firms. The campus is slowly loosing its green look as trees are cut every now and then to make more buildings. Positive remarks: The college provides a start up incubation centre, CITTIC for aspiring entrepreneurs. The degree from this college is of high value The college is NBA accredited with TEQIP-3. The faculty is highly experienced and trained. The campus provides a lot of opportunities.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course is well structured and starts at the basics of electronics and communication engineering. The first year gives an introduction to every branch of engineering along with labs. The first year provides a bridge between 12th grade and the future subjects. The subjects in the later years are quite basic but it lays a foundation for what is required in the industry. The course relies on older but necessary technologies. The course also requires students to research and learn the latest models of what is being taught in class. The labs are very efficient and lab assistants are very helpful. Majority of the lab equipment are in top conditions. Software in the lab is provided for free by the university. There are 2 internal exams which contribute to 25% of the total marks. 10% of the marks depends on assignments. 5% is based on the attendance. 60% of the marks is based on the final exam. A student requires 75% attendance to write the final exam. If a student fails to attend 75% of the classes, he/she can gain upto 10% of attendance by paying a condonation fee. This fees can only be paid twice during the course. The final exams are 3 hours long and the time table is quite chilled as 6 exams are conducted in a period of 14 days.
Placement Experience
The college does provide job opportunities. However, majority of the placement offers are from IT companies such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys, etc. Very few core companies visit this college for recruitment. Banks such as SBI, SIB, etc also visit for recruitment. BPCL, CISCO, Amazon, Cypress, L&T, IBM, etc are major companies that visit this college. The college curriculum requires the students to attend at least 2 weeks of internship between 3rd and 4th year of the course. The teachers are well connected to provide students with contacts for internships. College's TEQIP office provides stipend of Rs. 200/day if the internship certificate copy is submitted.
College Events
The best part of being in this college is that you can participate in events conducted by other colleges within the university such as School of Management Studies, School of Legal Studies, Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering, etc. Every college in this university has a technical festival and this college has Dhishna. Dhishna has become popular over the years and have conducted great events such as Mission 100K which entered the Guinness World Record this year. Performances from artists such as Dhvani Bhanushali also took place. The college arts festival provides a platform for different divisions of the college to show of their talents. The university arts festival is a huge event and has had guests such as Irfan Pathan, Jackie Shroff, etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is reasonable compared to other private colleges. However, compared to government colleges, it is quite expensive. For general state merit students, the fees is around Rs. 23,000. For general all India merit students, the fees is around Rs. 35,000. For SC/ST students, the fees is Rs. 180. For NRI students, the fees is around Rs. 50,000 with a caution deposit of Rs. 1,25,000 at the time of admission.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college provides scholarships based on performance every year to students of various caste, religion and the ones below poverty line. The college also provides money to SC/ST students buy laptops. Several scholarships are available to female students as well.
Campus Life
The gender ratios vary between each division. Overall, 35% students in the campus are girls. Extracurricular activities are quite prominent. College sports events include badminton, basketball, football, cricket, table tennis, volleyball, throw ball and athletics. University sports also include these events. Several geniuses across the world visit our campus to have interactive talks and conduct workshops here. The politics in the campus is quite prominent. Several clubs are present in the campus to help students develop themselves. Strikes and fights between different parties are quite common. Even during cultural events, such fights might take place. The student groups are quite diverse. The college is also accepting students from outside India. This includes students from Afghanistan, Nigeria, etc.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel rooms are allotted based on reservations, CAT rank and the distance from permanent address. The hostel rooms are not very neat. The rooms are shared by 3 students and can have upto 3 guests in one room. There are several college hostels within the campus. The monthly rent is Rs. 500 for general and almost nothing for OEC or SC/ST students. The boys hostel does not have a curfew. However, girls hostel will close their gates at 9:30 pm.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is weak. The alumni members are not connected with the students. They contact the teachers, but they have not contributed to the college. The efforts from the college to grow an alumni network is very low and therefore, placements lack their support. Senior students are very helpful and ragging is very rare in the campus.
Admission
The admission into this college is based on the Cochin University's entrance exam, CAT. While registering for the exam, one can choose the preferred exam, the preferred courses and the campus (1st campus in Kochi and 2nd campus in Alappuzha). There are several reservations in this university for SC/ST, OBC, OEC, NRI,etc. CAT score along with 10th and 12th grade marks determine the CAT rank. CAT rank along with reservations are ultimately the factors that determine an admission into this college. Based on the CAT rank, students are required to visit the campus on different days and choose the course based on the availability. Students from Kerala has a reservation and has a chance to get admission by state merit. Students outside Kerala can only get into this college by All India merit or NRI. Students from Kerala who did not get an admission by state merit can also get in through All India Merit. Students choosing NRI quota is required to pay a caution deposit of Rs. 1,25,000. Once the students choose the suitable course, they are required to submit their original 10th and 12th marklist along with the transfer certificate from their school. I Choose B. Tech in electronics and communication engineering in the 1st campus through All India quota.
Faculty
Majority of the faculties are PhD holders. They have experience from various colleges and have practical knowledge in their areas. They are highly committed to their students and teach in the most efficient ways while also trying to inculcate new methods of teaching such as flip class, exhibitions and simulations. The teachers try to know about the personal situation of each student and helps out in times of need. However, the guest lecturers are not as efficient as their senior counterparts. They are mostly young teachers on contract who are not very passionate about teaching.
