Remarks

This is undoubtedly one of the best colleges in India. Established in 1856, this is the 2nd oldest Engineering college in India. It has a culture and legacy of 163 years. The exquisite location of the college, so close to Kolkata and not even in an overcrowded place, makes it a perfect fit for the students. It is suitable for companies to approach us and for us to approach the companies as well.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

As far as mining engineering is concerned, no course curriculum can make the students industry ready. A lot of things are to be learnt once an engineer gets into an industry. But the course curriculum is very relevant. It is being updated after every 2-3 years. The weightage of obsolete subjects are reduced and syllabus is designed in such a way that a Mining student has adequate understanding of all the concepts involved in Mining. We have 5 subjects in each semester and most of them are department specific. In addition to that, there are also a few subjects common to all departments, e. g. Economics,Sociology, Accountancy, etc. We have a semester system of examinations. The end semester examinations are held in the months of December and May. There are mid semester examinations in September and March.

Placement Experience

4

As far as other departments are concerned, packages upto Rs 40 lpa have been offered and computer, electrical, mechanical departments have a great placement record. As far as internships are concerned, the college is visited by several companies for internships for 3rd year students. For second year students, the college arranges vocational training.

College Events

4.5

There are three main events in the college - the technical fest, the Cultural fest and Tedx. Apart from that separate departments and clubs conduct their fests. The technical fest of the college is one of the largest in Eastern India and is attended by more than 6000 people. We are joined by stalwarts from every industry like Coal India, CESC, HP, LIC, etc. The Cultural fest is one of the oldest in India. It started way back in 1932. It is a four day event and is attended by more than 10,000 people. TEDxIIESTSHIBPUR is the TED event of the college and has seen remarkable success in the three years since its inception.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The tuition fees is Rs 62500 per semester for a student. However, it is waived for students belonging to SC and ST categories. It is also waived for students with family income less than 1 lpa. For students with family income between 1-5 lpa, get a 60% waiver. Hostel charges are nominal. We are required to pay Rs 1900 per semester. Food charges are generally in the range of Rs 3000-4000 per month and include breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fees and Financial Aid

Scholarships are provided to students with less family income. The tuition fee is completely waived for SC and ST category students. It is also waived for students with family income less than 1lpa. For students with family income between 1 and 5 lpa, 60% fee is waived. Apart from that, any government scheme /scholarship programme applicable for engineering students is also applicable to IIEST, because it is a government college. Loan facilities are provided by the three banks in the college campus - The UCO Bank, United Bank of India and State Bank of India. There are special schemes for college students and interest rates are minimal.

Campus Life

4

The college has 13 clubs, all of them meant for different skills, like dance, drama, poetry, debating, etc. The clubs are functional throughout the year and interested students join the respective clubs. We have few of the best laboratories in India, as far as mining, metallurgy and mechanical departments are concerned. They are spacious and have few ultra advanced Equipments. The college is trying to build more labs for different departments. There are two large playgrounds for cricket and football, respectively. There is a basketball court, recently built. There is a gymnasium, with a wide variety of equipments. There is a badminton court and a volleyball court as well. There are no playgrounds for games like hockey, polo, etc.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The hostel buildings in the college are quite old and are not maintained in order. Actually, they are in sufficient numbers. There are are 14 hostels for undergraduate boys and 3 for undergraduate girls. Though, there are regular repairs, a lot still requires to be done. The college administration has been trying to acquire funds in order to expand the infrastructure. The food quality is satisfactory. Actually, it varies from hostel to hostel. There are 5 canteens in the entire campus and subsequently, we have a lot of options.

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network is very strong. IIEST being a very old institution, we have our alumni in almost all the major companies. They are very helpful as well. They always help us whenever we approach them. Be it placement, be it internship or be it any help for organising any event. The senior students are helpful and are very good in conduct. They treat us like their brothers and sisters. In fact, there is a culture in the college, that whenever a junior student meets any senior student outside the college, or in market, the senior students pay for the snacks of the juniors.

Admission

I appeared for Joint Entrance Examination and secured a rank of 33000. According to my rank, IIEST was the most suitable college I could get. I filled the counseling form and was alloted Mining Engineering in IIEST, Shibpur. I went to the college for physical reporting and upon producing the required documents, I got the admission.

Faculty

4.5

The teachers are very very learned and knowledgeable. Mining department has few of the best faculties in India. They are extremely qualified. Almost all of them are PhD holders. They are very helpful as well, specifically when you consult them for anything. The teachers are solely responsible for the placements and internships. They are also helpful in completion of projects. The teaching quality is really good. But the students are generally insincere. Most of them attend classes just to maintain attendance. But they study before exams and cover up for everything.

I’d rate HIT’s placement opportunities as 7.5/10 overall. It’s very good for CSE, IT, and ECE, decent for Electrical and core branches, and improving every year with more companies visiting and better preparation programs. If you’re skilled and consistent — especially in coding, communication, and aptitude — you’ll almost certainly get placed before graduatin
