What is the latest program that you are offering in BCET which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

Sardar Beant Singh University of Engineering and Technology Gurdaspur, Punjab offers several courses that are highly competitive and valuable career-wise. However, there are certain programs which are being offered like Engineering, Applied Science, Applied Physics and BSc agriculture that stand out. All of these courses are widely accepted these days everywhere and have a great scope.

What kind of student do you look for during the selection process for BCET?

Our selection process focuses on students who can demonstrate dedication and passion for learning and achieving their dreams. Initially, students submit their to their desired campus based on their JEE rank and 12th grade scores. Thereafter, all prospective applicants go through a mandatory interview round for all undergraduate courses.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the students are?

I believe that the primary stakeholders of BCET are the students themselves. My institution is working tirelessly to support and for the betterment of these students. We have introduced a feedback system to get suggestions and issues from the students so that can continue improving our efforts. My first concern is to provide an employable, supportive and friendly environment to the students where they learn the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.

How did you train your faculty to deliver programs to students in the best possible way?

Our university firmly believes that teachers play a major role in shaping students’ life. They not only teach them but also mould these students to become socially responsible citizens. To do this in an effective manner, it is important for the teachers to stay updated with the happenings of this dynamic world and the student's requirements. To make this process smoother, our college occasionally organizes professional development programs, hands-on training sessions and workshops to make sure our teachers stay aware of the latest technologies, educational practices and industry standards. In addition to this, teachers also collaborate with various educational communities and groups to stay attuned to the latest developments of the outside world and to equip themselves with better methods of dealing with challenging situations.

What are the interventions you bring in apart from the curriculum to train the students?

Each student wants to perform well and learn, but their learning methods may vary. Due to the difference in thinking, they learn differently. Acknowledging this, we put a significant emphasis on self-regulation strategies for metacognition, collaborative learning, peer tutoring, as well as effective feedback. Our aim is to help them become better learners by providing them with adequate time, support, and tools.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see for higher education?

I think the biggest challenge in higher education is to provide a world-class higher education within a defined price range. Improving the quality of research and increasing industry-academia collaboration for better employability of students are also major hurdles. I believe the entire higher education system should be redrafted to fit the present scenario better. There is, but a ray of hope in the latest New National Education Policy that is being adopted for higher education.
