North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) is a medical institute located in Shillong, Meghalaya. It is the 1st postgraduate medical institution in the North Eastern region, established in 1987. NEIGRIHMS is an autonomous institute affiliated with North Eastern Hill University. 

The institute offers UG, PG, and Super-Speciality courses in various specializations. MBBS and B.Sc Nursing are the flagship programs of the institute. NEIGRIHMS Admission 2025

NEIGRIHMS Shillong offers admission to UG and PG courses in Medicine and Nursing. NEIGRIHMS Admission will be offered based on NEET UG, NEET PG, and NEET SS scores, followed by Meghalaya NEET Counselling.

For admissions to medical courses, candidates have to register for the Meghalaya NEET Counselling on the institute’s website @neigrihms.gov.in based on their scores in the NEET examination. The Directorate of Health Services, Government of Meghalaya, will conduct the counselling in collaboration with NEIGRIHMS in the offline mode.  

Candidates have to register and pay the fee of INR 500. They can submit the counselling form in person at the institute's campus or by speed post. Eligible students need to check the official website of NEIGRIHMS and then attend a medical examination if shortlisted. Second and third rounds of counselling will be conducted, if any, to fill any remaining or vacant seats. 

Further, admission to nursing courses will be through the entrance examinations conducted by the institute, followed by the institute’s counselling session. Candidates can apply on the official website of NEIGRIHMS. The institute will announce the merit list of qualified candidates. Eligible and selected candidates must submit their documents for verification and pay the requisite fee for the seat allotted to confirm their admission.

NEIGRIHMS Cutoff 2025

NEIGRIHMS Cutoff varies each year depending on factors such as difficulty in examination, seat availability, and the number of students participating. Candidates must secure the minimum marks in their respective entrance examinations. The NEET 2025 cutoff has not been released yet. However, the overall NEET UG Cutoff was 10011 - 24090 for the general category in 2024. The one stop guide to NEIGRIHMS

Student view on course curriculum and exams

MBBS is uniform throught the country in all government medical colleges. The course is a long 5.5 years and as for NEIGRIHMS, you get about 1 week of summer vacation and 1 week of winter vacation. Attendance above 75% is a must for theory and 80% for practical, for all 19 subjects. MBBS is the only course that prepares you to become doctors and learn the skills required for patient care so the course is not a easy one. One must know how to handle stress with the vast syllabus and opt for MBBS if you have a strong sense of admiration for the human body and it's care. There is no part that makes the course irrelevant and you are tested throught the year with 2 internal exams, 1 pre University and 1 University exams with roughly 2/3 months in between. University exams usually happen by a month of pre University.

Internship opportunity provided by the college and stipend

The college gives internships to students who pass final year from this college. It is a 1 year internship with 30k roughly per month, includes posting in all 19 departments along with a month or rural posting in a village, few weeks of rban posting in a state hospital.

Yearly fees and scholarship

The yearly course fee for 2020 batch was 1600 rupees but it has jumped to 16000 for 2021 and all subsequent batches. I am not sure of the detailed structure but other than the mess fee, you don't have any other expenses. The mess fee as of now is 120 rupees per day and is compulsory for everyone, even if you choose to stay outside the hostels. Scholarships are available for respective State quotas and reservations, the college as such does not have any. Campus does not have any employment facilities

College fest and various activities

If cleanliness and peace is your go to, there rarely can be any campus that beats NEIGRIHMS. Located on the edge of a hill and a reserve forest on one end, you barely feel the harsh pollution of other Indian states. The college fest is called EUPHORIA and it is a 7 day event roughly divided into Literary events, Cultural events, and sports. All local colleges of shillong get included and is a jam packed week. The dynamic is no doubt going to change for the better with the increase in seats per batch from 50 to 100 from 2024 batch. The college was used for Asia games in the past thus has a world-class Basketball court, badminton, swimming pool(not functional), squash court, tennis court, and a newly equipped gym. The Central library is of 3 floors, air-conditioned with 8-10 copies of each book. There is sufficient space and allows students to use it from 9am-9pm on weekdays, 9am-7pm on Saturday and stays closed on Sundays. In addition to this a 30-40 capacity study room 24/7.

Hostel facilities provided by the college

Hostels are compulsory for everyone, some local students do stay outside but need to pay the mess fee of 120 rupees per day. Each room in the old hostel has 1 bed, 1 table, 1 cupboard, 2 power sockets, 1 chair and 2 windows. The new hostels provide 1 extra cupboard in addition to the above and also has 2 elevators. Common washrooms with 6 toilet and 6 shower rooms per floor. There is a mess area where food is brought but lucky for us who live in the old boys, food gets cooked here so we're always the first to have it available. The mess is on contact and probably the worst part of the college. The food doesn't taste good half the time and only on regular complaints they revert to improving, for a short while sadly!

Admission process and eligibility criteria

The admission to NEIGRIHMS, like any other medical College is via NEET UG exams. The college currently has 50 students per batch which will change to 100 this upcoming batch of 2024. During our admissions the seats were divided as follows- Northeast Quota(18 seats) with ranks between 9k-18k, I personally joined via this at 615 (AIR13000). All India Quota(8 seats) with ranks ranging from 12k-18k. Nagaland quota (9 seats), Mizoram (3seats) which has now been removed for future batches, Arunachal quota (5 seats), meghalaya (9 seats). The eligibility varies for all quotas, for All India quota u need to have applied for the all India councelling, for northeast quota u need to be a recident of 1 of the northeast States. Unsure of the other quotas. Application form is required for all except all India quota which becomes available in the main website of NEIGRIHMS.com The admission process was quite smooth and won't be a hassle, you need to be present in the college during councelling.

Review of NEIGRIHMS medical College

Admission:

For admission in any medical College including NEIGRIHMS you have to clear NEET entrance exam and have a minimum of 75% in your board exams. There is no age criteria for joining MBBS. The application from for neet is in NTA website and Neigrihms admission from is from the official website of Neigrihms. Usually the admission is an offline process it would be better if it was online. The admission fees is Rs.50k.

My college NEIGRIHMS

Admission:

I took mbbs course at NEIGRIHMS for which I had to clear NEET 2022 which was very hectic as the selection ratio was very low but I managed to score 627 and I got into the college by North East quota apart from this thera are other state quotas for meghalaya nagaland mizoram arunachal... application form fees are updated in the NEIGRIHMS official website the neet exam is usually held in the March of May and it's very challenging the subject are pcb and the exam time is 3 hr 20 min overall the admission process was quite smooth but it was declared on the website very late so if it could get updated atleast before 29 days it would be better for the students

My life in NEIGRIHMS till now

Admission:

I gave my NEET exam in 2020. In which I secured 574 marks and I got selected in NEIGRIHMS. Anyone who have physics, chemistry, biology in class 12 can gave the neet exam. Neet exam was basically a three hours exams which includes physics, chemistry and biology. Total marks is seven hundred twenty. Biology is 360 marks and the rest two subjects is 180 each. Application form is come under the internet. I took admission in NEIGRIHMS through online counseling via videos call. The examination process is very simple and good and I have no complaints about it

Pros and cons of NEIGRIHMS life

Admission:

I m from all india quota so for me the rank required in NEET Exam is almost 20,000 . Like for me as I got the seat from all india quota it is from nmc site.. Yes reservation is provided for those from North East India.. The NEET exam occurs once in a year and the exam is not that much difficult but the competition is cut throat.. Like the quota provided by the university to North eastern people should be less.. I think this ll be very improving

NEIGRIHMS- Best in Shillong

Admission:

The admission process is a bit hectic. It began by going to the medical unit department near the examination cell. They asked the required documents and gave the details for opting a medical examination. I had to go to different departments starting straight from the hospital main entrance. Searching the departments are a bit of complicated but the overall experience was fun. There are canteens which serve exquisite food in every floor. First I had to go to the general surgery department for checkup , then to the ophthalmology department in the 1st floor for eye checkup and then to the ENT department for ear checkup and also had to go to the blood bank and radiology department for tests and ultimate checkup was complete. All were attested to the documents and along with the challan and bond it was done with hostel allotment and mess.

I scored 410 in neet exam through ST quota in my state nagaland. the exam was taken once a year n i got through after taking a year gap. The admission was strictly followed n it was good experience On admission many test was done like urine sample, blood drawing n etc. After that we were allowed to stay in hostel n after 2 days of my admission oriantation program started n after one week of orientation classes was taken.

What is the environment like for doing an MBBS in NEIGRIHMS, in Shillong? How's the study environment? Is it worth it to study there?

NEIGRIHMS is a central institute. It is the cleanest medical college in India. It has a good infrastructure which includes a cancer hospital and a state-of-the-art sports ground. The college auditorium is really impressive, and it has state-of-the-art lecture halls.

NEIGRIHMS offers all the basic amenities to its MBBS students. You’ll get more lectures and clinical postings than most state colleges. The patient load is high and they come with a variety of ailments. So you’ll get good clinical exposure. The faculty is friendly and dedicated. You can easily approach the teachers and residents for doubt-solving. 

The mess food isn’t good. Also, the hostels near RMO aren’t in very good condition. These are two main drawbacks of the institute. 

Overall, NEIGRIHMS is a good college for pursuing your MBBS.

How is NEIGRIHMS, Shillong for MBBS if I want to pursue my residency in the US?

I would advise you to not opt for NEIGRIHMS if you plan to pursue your residency in the US. It is better to look for other colleges if you are seeking admission through NEET. You can join a USMLE coaching during your MBBS degree itself. At some other college, you’ll be exposed to students who have cleared their USMLE. Almost negligible MBBS students from NEIGRIHMS apply for/ clear USMLE. The college is in a budding state, so the faculty isn’t sufficient. However, the teachers are helpful and supportive. 

NEIGRIHMS is not a very good option in your case.

You’ll face a problem regarding mess food if you are a vegetarian. 

The girls’ mess still provides an alternative option when non-vegetarian dishes are served, but the boys’ mess offers no alternative. The mess food is poor in taste. As a vegetarian, you’ll end up spending around Rs. 3000 per month eating from the Cafeteria or Guest House. The boys’ mess serves no roti, only rice. The girls’ mess offers roti and comparatively better food.

Other than the food at the mess, everything else is top-notch at NEIGRIHMS.

NEIGRIHMS is a Government Medical Institute under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. Admission to the MBBS course is through NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate), conducted by NTA. There is no provision for direct admission or management quota seats at NEIGRIHMS
